NW here, glad we went for a walk yesterday as its going to be shit for the next 3 days.

Ironlights · 27/12/2023 10:29

This is our climate now in the UK, milder, wetter and windier. We'd better get used to it...extremes all over the globe.

goMe46 · 27/12/2023 10:53

Gusts of 40mph in West Kent (inland)
Waiting for bins to topple over again!

Hedjwitch · 27/12/2023 10:58

Weather is dreadful here in Fife. V high winds and lashing rain. Dd had to turn back because of floods and falling trees ( Blairgowrie). Its quite scary

HelpMeGetThrough · 27/12/2023 11:10

Wind seems to be getting stronger here. Have been a few really heavy gusts.

Looking like it will be gusting to Force 9 here this afternoon.

Gnomegnomegnome · 27/12/2023 11:14

We’ve sprung multiple leaks throughout the house and struggled to open the door to let the dog out earlier because the wind was pushed it back.

NewYearNewYu · 27/12/2023 11:16

Can anyone tell me what weather warning Cheshire is under? There are some for wind, some for rain on the met office site, but they are overlapping so I can’t tell which we are under.

Wind, by the looks of it.

NewYearNewYu · 27/12/2023 11:36

Thank you, yes that does seem to match what I can see out the window. Think it’s a day for staying in.

Pixiedust1234 · 27/12/2023 11:46

Thanks for the thread.

Yesterday was non stop rain and it kept waking me up though the night when it hit the windows hard although I didn't actually hear the wind. Pleased its mild though since my boiler has been broken since Christmas eve 😱

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/12/2023 12:05

Wind and Rain for parts of Cheshire. Easiest to put in your location and then look at the headers.

There does need to be some sort of overhaul of how Met Offices warnings are shown graphically, but it's hard to know how they could be changed for the better.

It's so warm indoors would love to open the windows but they'd be off their hinges.

Our gas electric bill should be low this month

I can confirm that will happen. The storm a couple of weeks ago did that to the UPVC window in my eldests room, bent the hinges to hell. I could close it, just, after some faffing with it.

Fortunately, side hung hinges are pretty cheap.

Lesson learnt, they are all firmly shut or on night vent.

Scotsgirl001 · 27/12/2023 13:53

I moved into my new house a week ago. Facing the NE coast and I’m currently getting battered by gales and rain. My anxiety is off the scale. I’m convinced the roof is going to blow off or the windows blow in! Although the house has been here for lots of years so I’m probably being irrational 🫣I think we’re at the peak so hopefully will start to ease off soon.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/12/2023 14:02

I think you should be ok Scotsgirl.

A9 in Scotland seems to severely snowed up with stranded vehicles.

Mad that some people take umbrage at Met Office warnings when this is precisely why they exist.

@OhYouBadBadKitten it's Thursday. Where I am there is no let up in the wind till Saturday evening and then it's back Sunday afternoon. It's been like this for a week now.

What turns it from simple bad and windy weather to a storm worthy of a name? I mean apart from the fact when it hits the south it seems newsworthy in a way that the North isn't 😁

Dragonfly97 · 27/12/2023 14:34

Wind intensifying here in north Shropshire; some heavy showers. Wondering what Saturday will bring!!

garlictwist · 27/12/2023 15:14

We have just spent all day trying to do the normal (3 hour) train journey from Yorkshire to Edinburgh to visit the in-laws but have just given up and got on a train home as they were all cancelled. Throwing it down. Hoping we get back in one piece.

ANightmareBeforeChristmas · 27/12/2023 15:19

Just driven up the M6 northbound from the M5 junction, to the M62 and along the M62 - you could really feel the wind at the M62 summit! Traffic about 40 MPH on M62 summit section, but journey not as bad as expected, mostly just the usual hold ups at the M6 junctions. However, southbound M6 was much worse, lots of traffic at a standstill.

nannynick · 27/12/2023 16:01

I have not been out all day... missing my usual walk. 40mph gust recorded on local weather station, so good that I have not been out walking. 1.6 inches of rain. Power flickers but has remained on. Does mean that the Xmas 1000 piece jigsaw is coming along nicely.

Hedjwitch · 27/12/2023 17:31

Sis tried to get home from Edinburgh to London today but no chance. Trains cancelled and massive delays.

Does anyone else remember when trains still ran on bad weather

They used to be hauled by great powerhouses of locomotives, that's why. Now they are almost all feeble DMUs.

RandomMess · 27/12/2023 17:45

NW utterly fed up of the weather, grateful all the adult DC travelled here safely today.

It has been pretty much relentless for weeks, DDog is very unimpressed and won't consider going out in it.

RampantIvy · 27/12/2023 17:48

Just driven up the M1, A1M and A19 from South Yorkshire to the coast near Newcastle and the rivers are in full spate and most of the fields are waterlogged with lakes and huge puddles. No wind as yet.

Looking at the weather map it seems that my route escaped the worst of it.

@FreshWinterMorning I can't remember a year when we have had this many storms back to back like this. It has been an unusually wet year and unusually windy autumn and winter so far.
