Storm Ciarán

This is an early heads up.

Models have consistently been bringing in a deep low pressure for sometime over Wed/Thurs. As is often the case, details are yet to be nailed down, but some of the models are producing some severe gusts - southern coastal winds of up to 90mph and more widespread inland winds of around 60mph. With storms, comes rain too unfortunately. A wobble in the track could take them further north or, keep it all in France. Exactly when and where the low pressure develops will make a big difference in the outcome. More details to follow.

If the storm is named, it will be Storm Ciaran. At that point I'll ask MNHQ to change the title appropriately.

Some schools closed along the East Anglia coast. Where I work is slightly inland but we’ve been warned we may close.

North Coast Cornwall check-in. Been rainy & a little windy but nothing out of the ordinary at all so far.

Ngl. Feeling a lil disappointed

It hasn't even started yet! You may regret saying that in 6 hours time 😕

Jerry did a live broadcast from Heathrow today. I think he called it the 'Storm Ciaran prelude'

See my cross-post with a link somewhere recentish up there ^

Good luck and stay safe, from a lurker in a hurricane zone.
950mb is something to take seriously.
And with sodden ground, trees in full leaf and tiled roofs, there is likely to be a lot of damage and debris flying around.

DarklySparkly · 01/11/2023 20:04

I’m keeping on eye on this live tracking, posted by PP. Depending on where you are in Cornwall, it’s barely arrived yet. https://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/surface/level/orthographic=-9.19,48.94,1469/loc=-12.845,44.846

I hope it isn't as awful as predicted, everyone.

Me too! I’m a bit confused about who to trust regarding the forecast (this might have been covered before, I’ve only just seen the thread). North Kent Coast here, we’re in the amber warning area and our local weather forecast on the BBC at 6pm said gusts of up to 70-80 mph. Ten minutes later the main BBC weather forecast said gusts of up to 60-70mph. And the Met Office online is showing a max of 57mph between 7-8am tomorrow. I suppose it’s just a case of wait and see, hope for the best, prepare for the worst. I’m just worried about the animals in the local sanctuary that me and the DDs volunteer at. Everything that can be has been tied down, locked up and protected as much as possible, but it’s in the middle of a field, quite open but also surrounded by very tall trees and extremely prone to flooding - thanks to all of the house building that has happened over the last few years on every side. So stressful.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/11/2023 20:06

I'll be honest, I am genuinely very concerned for Channel Islands at present. I would be making sure I know where my insurance documents are and that I was prepared for a blackout lasting sometime. I wouldn't have precious things in loft spaces because of the risk of damage to roofs.

Still a lot of schools on half term here in North Kent as they tend to have two weeks from October half term, thankfully.

Apologies I haven't read the full thread. Please could anyone say if the storm is expected to hit Hertfordshire?

In Hertfordshire, Herefordshire and Hampshire, hurricanes hardly ever happen.

Sorry, couldn’t resist.

tropicaltailwind · 01/11/2023 20:08

I agree @OhYouBadBadKitten - I flagged this storm to my U.K. family including relatives in Jersey and sent them my hurricane prep and aftermath tips. It’s certainly going to hit hurricane speeds in the Channel Islands and I don’t know if their infrastructure is going to be able to cope and what the building codes are like compared to places like where I live, which is in a hurricane zone.

Wondering if Big Jet TV will be doing a broadcast tomorrow. I was hooked by their coverage from Heathrow during Storm Eunice last year.

Yes that was a fab watch Grin

I'm being kinda tongue in cheek but we were due a couple of hours of wind right now & very little has happened. Unfortunately I love wild weather, I just do. Rain, wind etc. That said, I take zero pleasure in the damage it can cause & I'm really concerned about the south coast tomorrow, I'm not sure how well prepared ppl are, psychologically speaking.

Southampton and Portsmouth schools have been directed to close. I'm based halfway between on the coast and pleased they've made that decision. OH works in Poole right on the seafront and seems adamant they'll expect him at work (painter/decorator)

You're literally where I am then !!!

I'm not fancying chances of getting anywhere tomorrow for most of the day!

Mummylin · 01/11/2023 20:18

The wind is getting stronger in Bournemouth now despite us being downgraded to yellow warning. We have had a few downpours too.

SequentialAnalyst · 01/11/2023 20:18

@PuzzledObserver on the other hand:

The rain in Spain stays mainly on the plain.

Lucky Spain, that's all I can say. Try living in the British Isles.

DorisJoy · 01/11/2023 20:20

Meant to be flying into Gatwick early tomorrow evening from the canaries. Feeling a tad anxious.

I think it is after the eye passes that the wind is the most strong. This image from windy.com shows the eye hitting penzance at midnight, you will then have a period of calm followed by the wind completely shifting direction and becoming much stronger

@OhYouBadBadKitten We don’t have overhead power cables in Guernsey, the infrastructure is under the roads.
You're making me feel more nervous in my half a house. We probably wouldn’t be covered I guess because we are renovating, in the event of something severe happening.
We've tried to secure the site as much as possible, just have to keep everything crossed now!

Is it's hitting Heathrow again then with big jet man?
I thought it was lower down

PL15namechange · 01/11/2023 20:26

On the middle of the Cornwall / Devon border here. Sounding blowy, and a bit wet. Nothing too drastic so far.

I've been peering at the (very dark!) surf cams around cornwall but haven't seen any big waves yet.

Police advising against all but essential travel, there's the majority (almost all) local schools shut, except ours, which have said they're definitely open even though it is currently covered in scaffolding... Can't help feeling that's a bit daft!

can you pack up a few valuables and go and stay somewhere "whole"?

QueenSqueak · 01/11/2023 20:28

Not sure if it's been previously posted as just found this thread, I work for the electricity distribution company that covers a lot of the at risk area, we are prepping as much as possible to help people but linespeople can't work at height until winds go below 25mph, if your power does go off call 105, you may have to wait a while but we will get to you, I've spoken to some very anxious people today that are still traumatised from Eunice
