Part 1 was getting a bit giant and in the miraculous event that I manage to sleep in a little tomorrow, it seems a good idea to start the new thread a little early. Part 1:

Met office warnings www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings

We didn't quite get to record UK temperatures, though lots of site records were achieved and Wales beat its previous record temperature by more than 2c. Tomorrow we look very likely to beat the UK record and to surpass 40c.

Tonight, obviously, do everything you can to cool your homes down, it won't be easy with lows of 24c in some places. One more day and it will feel much better for many.

Apologies for the depressing post, but I don't think anyone's mentioned on this thread yet about reminding teenagers in particular to please, please, no matter how hot they get, avoid jumping into open water. Hidden currents, obstacles, or just the sudden shock from the temperature difference can be fatal, and there's been a few tragedies in the last days.

We're in the heartland of the hottest place (Heathrow-way), but TBH the main thing on many of the parents' minds here is hearing all the sirens heading down to the Thames yesterday, or driving past groups of sobbing teenagers, and only finding out later that it was because of the poor 14-year-old boy who was jumping into the river with a big group of mates to cool down, and never resurfaced. Heartbreaking.

Is it the jumping in that is the issue as you get caught on something underwater?
I am around your way too and we often swim and paddle board I'm the Thames. Past teddington lock the river isn't tidal and it always feels pretty peaceful.

Thanks for this, rain just west of Salisbury, not too far away ....

velvetvixen · 19/07/2022 15:52

I'm thinking there will be lots of backyard bbqs this evening. Another reason I don't enjoy Summer.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2022 15:53

I wouldn’t have a charcoal bbq but is gas ok? Don’t want to cook inside but a bit bored with butties.

BlackeyedSusan · 19/07/2022 15:54

You beat me to it! By seconds!

I guess only you know your situation and how safe it is. It's very hard when no one wants to cook inside. In my garden? probably would, but with the hose pipe ready just in case. But please don't take that as official advice because I'm just a random stranger with an opinion.

Weather definitely on the change here in W. Worcs, sky is going greyish with lower cloud to the west/SW. The edge has slightly gone off the heat. That weather front is approaching although its journey across the Welsh mountains has weakened it.

HannahSternDefoe · 19/07/2022 15:56

Those disposable BBQs should be banned permanently.

There's been a kid with burned feet at the beach because some arse buried a used one while it was still hot.

HannahSternDefoe · 19/07/2022 15:59

@3WildOnes The cases (historically) near me were due to v low river levels and the impact of lads jumping off a footbridge.

Planetearthisscrewed · 19/07/2022 16:01

Utterly heartbreaking 😢

borntobequiet · 19/07/2022 16:02

Crunchy I’m near you and quite high up so have a good view to the West.
Wind has dropped a bit though still gusty, feels cooler and visibility really poor now. It’s quite striking.

They are banned in the whole council area where my parents live but there's still posts on fb showing people using them at the local beauty spots on most days.

There's been a large fire a few miles outside of our town, hay bales and at least 2 fields. The farmers were having to cut down crops to create fire breaks, at least 6 fire engines attended. Anyone who lights a bonfire or bbq right now needs their heads examined TBH.

ihatethecold · 19/07/2022 16:07

Thanks for linking the lightening maps. Im in Cambridge and desperate for it to cool down

MeridianGrey · 19/07/2022 16:07

I think there are a few danger in swimming in waterways. As mentioned jumping from a height when you don’t know for sure what is beneath the surface or how shallow it is. The risk of getting caught on something and not being able to get free. Then there is the possibility of cold water shock as the water doesn’t take on the outside temperature. Final one I can think of is the risk of rip currents which are not visable .

HMSSophia · 19/07/2022 16:07

kitten you are such a calm voice of the facts. Thank you

I have a feeling we are on the same Hill (hills)! Yes I too am at some elevation with a great view westwards to Wales, or I did have, as you say visibility has markedly decreased.

BirmaBrite · 19/07/2022 16:09

North Yorks here, last night was awful, today really warm, think it got to 38-39 at once point, wind has really picked up now, doesn't feel much cooler because of it though !

You're welcome. When I stop to contemplate the reality of what I am typing and now it is affecting people I feel quite upset and shocked. Tomorrow after a issuing an amateur level forecast I'll take some time out during the day to rebalance and contemplate what has happened today.

New Met office warning for the NE for thunderstorms.www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings

The risk of them breaking out is low according to the met office risk matrix, but there is a risk that if these break out, there is a low risk of them sparking wildfires, especially if they are highly electrified without much rain. Please be aware, but not unduly alarmed - the risk of this happening is currently low.
