General discussion is www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4583720-we-need-to-talk-about-the-weather-and-the-potential-for-extreme-heat but I wanted this to be seen by as many people as possible.

She shouldn't use the bus or tube if she can avoid it.

Thanks for this. SIL is a real workaholic but she could technically WFH.

Were currently tipped to be 34 Monday and 36 Tuesday, I’ve just spoken to my ds day services ( he has special needs) and said we’re going to keep him at home Tuesday, luckily he doesn’t attend on a Monday but when he does they take him out and about which is obviously not a good idea on those days, at least he can have plenty of shower’s and lollies to keep cool when at home.

jessycake · 15/07/2022 12:29

My daughter was in paris with those temperatures and a lot of the trains broke down , and they were totally overcrowded and crammed in the ones that were still working .Take any sensible precautions you can do and have plenty of water and snacks with you if you have to travel.
I think school should at least be optional .

Georgyporky · 15/07/2022 12:30

N.I. looks rather chilly.

Mybeautifulfriend22 · 15/07/2022 12:30

I work on a ward that can be 28 degrees in just warmer weather. It’s actually hideous when 25 degrees outside. Nevermind adding the PPE in the equation and no ventilation. Urgh. Those are going to be long 12.5 hour days.

xxcatcatcatxx · 15/07/2022 12:31

Omg this!!! I think there might be a massive discrepancy between city and more town/ rural areas which will hopefully let a lot of people “off the hook”.

We used to live in a block of flats in the middle of the city and would melt every single year. Now we live a bit nearer the forest and today I’m inside snuggled under a duvet.

It’s so mad how location can change heat so drastically. Definitely those places more inland and built are going to feel it. PS have lived reading the main thread OP were so lucky to have your knowledge xxx

Thank you @drum123 - Our bedroom gets very hot easily. Some hot water bottles in the freezer now!

I have a couple of chronic illnesses and DH is on medication that affects his ability to regulate his temperature. We'll both be staying home Sun-Tue (thankfully can WFH and reschedule stuff) and doing all the little gimmicks I can possibly think of to stay cool. Reading people's comments for tips!

Im finding it really strange all the panic. The people that are worried the most, are you people who havent travelled to really hot countries before? I go Cyprus most years in August and its always that heat and its fine. When I was younger I used to get drunk in the day in that heat in Cyprus. People who are panicking honestly it will be fine dont worry.

C'mon....

I live in a hot country.... do you see me posting something like your comment? No... I have not , and why do you think that is?

There is a HUGE difference if you live in a country where amenities are geared up for these temperatures. And for us it is normal, so therefore we know what to expect. It is like us getting hit by a severe cold front..... we are not geared up for it and its causes a lot of problems as a result.

Let me not even start on the drinking all day in the sun. You were on holiday I assume. Its also very different working and carrying on life as normal in conditions that people are not used to.

I'm 39 weeks pregnant Blush normally I'd be trying to start labour, but I really don't want to start before next Wednesday!

sod that! Fingers crossed baby stays there until it's over!!

CompleteGinasaur · 15/07/2022 12:36

I'm 60, disabled and pretty overweight, so quite vulnerable to the ill effects of extreme temperatures like those on the way. One trick I have found to be an absolute life saver is to take some of those paperback book sized freezer blocks and, well, freeze them, wrap one in a cotton tea towel or even a face flannel (dry!), and hold them under each armpit in turn so that they are in contact with the large veins under there (Other large veins are available..!). Once the freezer block begins to melt, replace with another from the freezer and refreeze the first one.

P.S. Make sure whichever cloth you wrap around the block is dry or the moisture will freeze to your skin!

Hrpuffnstuff1 · 15/07/2022 12:37

36c here in a Yorkshire village, It looks like it will be sunny, so it'll be factor 50, 2 liters of water and tan, tan, tan.

Suetwo · 15/07/2022 12:38

God, 40 degrees in a city like Manchester or Leeds is no joke, especially when the houses are designed to retain rather than release heat. London will be especially awful. I’m dreading Sunday and Monday.

How can people still be denying climate change?! We broke the record in 2003, then again in 2019, and now we’re set to reach 40 degrees for the first time ever. Climate change is happening right in front of us. If Spain can hit 45 (or was it 47?) today, what will it be like in ten or twenty years? Will it be common to hit 50 degrees? Or 55? Can humans survive in that kind of heat?

My friend is taking her young children to a theme park on Tuesday, forecast 39! I’ve tried to tell her to cancel/re-book but she’s still going. Absolute madness

This is madness.

Is it just a park with rides or a water park too?

RedToothBrush · 15/07/2022 12:42

We've had temps of 35C here in the past. (Thats what is forecast here).

I think my concern is about how the red warning is whipping people up into a bit of a frenzy tbh. I think its counter productive in a way.

I went to Turkey when I was young. It was 40 degrees and the aircon wasn't working properly. I spent a week in hospital and I wasn't drinking all day in the sun.

StarDolphins · 15/07/2022 12:44

I'm quite unflappable but I’m quite worried! More for my dog, he’s a bit furry at the min & due a haircut & he’s a bit portly!

I’ll be….
Closing all windows/curtains/blinds
coving the outside of French doors with foil covered cardboard
freezing bottles of water to put in front of fans
sleeping downstairs
NOT putting the oven on - sarnies & sushi for tea mon & Tues!

JustLyra · 15/07/2022 12:48

I’ve already decided I’m keeping my youngest home from school Monday and Tuesday. She goes by taxi to her specialist school and is prone to seizures if she gets too hot. There’s been no word yet from the school about their plans but they’re generally supportive of what parents choose.

Not sure about the two bigger kids at mainstream. Shall play that one by ear.

WimbyAce · 15/07/2022 12:48

I am scheduled to be in the office Monday, old NHS building so no air con etc. Is gonna be a nightmare but it is what it is, can't see me being v productive though!

I wonder what people with glass south-facing rear extensions will do? They will act like massive greenhouses.

We will just stay out of there and live in the cool side 😄 Simple

Do you mean like a conservatory?

You can line with windows with tinfoil, shiny side facing out. Or cut cardboard to fit and wrap those and wedge them into the window space.

Those who camp with caravans may already have the ideal thing to use. We put an extra silver tent cover over our tent awning to keep the tent cooler. If anyone has one of these, trying to position it over the glass may work for a temporary measure.

As you can imagine, I disagree. It will have been issued with a lot of debate about the impact of issuing this warning. The Level 4 heat warning is primarily aimed at agencies, especially health agencies, but also energy companies, rail network operators etc - in order that they will undertake actions as agreed under the Heatwave plan. It is the mechanism that launches these actions in a coordinated manner, headed up by the cabinet office.
