General discussion is www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4583720-we-need-to-talk-about-the-weather-and-the-potential-for-extreme-heat but I wanted this to be seen by as many people as possible.

I wonder what people with glass south-facing rear extensions will do? They will act like massive greenhouses.

This is our house. We didn't put them in and are planning on changing them but obviously we'll have to manage next week. We'll sit in the other side of the house which stays cool!

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 15/07/2022 12:05

I was out in town today absolutely sweltering and pouring with sweat doing NHS home visits and couldn't help noticing the hoards of elderly wandering about in teashirts.
The same people who head off to the shops in the snow and break their hips.
WHY don't people stay at home in this weather unless its absolutely essential or plan ahead.
I'm 60 and I can't cope with this heat - I'm only out because its my job.

Somethingneedstochange · 15/07/2022 12:06

It's bad enough in our porch usually have to open the window when we get home. A lot have blind's though it does help.

LouScot · 15/07/2022 12:07

I'm writing this from the fairly comfortable position of knowing east central Scotland will be lovely and warm but hopefully not dangerous on Monday and Tuesday.

I just want to thank @OhYouBadBadKitten for her threads and urge everyone in areas likely to be affected to please take heed. Following her advice will literally save lives - the elderly and those with underlying conditions are at risk. As several of you have mentioned, the infrastructure in the UK is simply not set up to deal with these temperatures and our bodies aren't used to it.

@OhYouBadBadKitten hundreds of thousands of people in the uk are going to die on Mon/Tues because of the heat? Are you sure you've got that right?

Hundreds OR thousands

LouScot · 15/07/2022 12:11

@mnhq can you please promote @OhYouBadBadKitten 's threads? Lots of excellent advice that will keep people healthy and safe

MeridianGrey · 15/07/2022 12:12

@MsMarvellous or maybe she did actually mean hundreds OF thousands .

MsMarvellous · 15/07/2022 12:13

I hope not 😭

FlibbertyGiblets · 15/07/2022 12:14

THank you for the updates here. Flipping nora.

goforbroke · 15/07/2022 12:14

I'm really concerned about people that do intensive outdoor manual jobs, like tree surgeons, builders, road workers, grounds maintenance. My partner does one of them and I keep asking him to take it as holiday! (He doesn't do public service work so nothing would be affected). Forecast 37, just seems too unbelievably hot to contemplate as someone who avoids hot countries and going outside in the sun!

Somethingneedstochange · 15/07/2022 12:14

It's the people who don't think you need to wear sunscreen in the UK who wind me up. It's the same sun as when you go abroad. Factor 50 on my kids they got burnt at sports day one year in a heat wave. I put it on them before school but school are responsible for topping up. (Which is special needs so they are allowed to put it on them on children they know won't think of putting any on.

I think she said hundreds OR thousands. Not hundreds of thousands!

Or not of

Porcupineintherough · 15/07/2022 12:15

Ah, thank you. Hundreds or thousands makes sense.

I wonder if local government will set up cooling centres as they do in other countries?

LivingInaBuildingSite · 15/07/2022 12:16

I work in a care home that is hot in normal times. It’s been so sweaty this week!

I read about other job sectors saying it’ll be too hot to work, but what can we do? We still have to carry on (as other sectors will too obviously, nhs, etc.). We have some fans going, blinds down where the sun comes in and so on.

really not looking forward to Monday and Tuesday.

love @OhYouBadBadKitten threads and advice, anything specific for the very elderly? Most don’t move around that much in my home although we have a few restless wanderers.
Push fluids obvs, lots of ice lollies.

tulips27 · 15/07/2022 12:17

@MsMarvellous I do like them, they can provide light during the rest of the year and even help prevent SAD. Maybe you can fit massive blinds instead of removing them?

NotSorry · 15/07/2022 12:17

We’re coming home from our holiday a day early so we don’t have to drive in it on Monday - I’ve got an endoscopy booked Tuesday - hospitals are already too hot 😢

Livingthedreaminscotland · 15/07/2022 12:17

Many people have got to go to work as they don’t get paid, the people I feel sorry for are the nurses, care workers in care homes, warehouse and factory workers, bakeries, supermarket workers and so on. They will be the ones stuck inside in this severe heat. Not everyone has the luxury to wfh.

Borgonzola · 15/07/2022 12:17

I'm 39 weeks pregnant Blush normally I'd be trying to start labour, but I really don't want to start before next Wednesday!

They are massively energy inefficient as they aren't insulated for winter so we're going to rebuild
The back better! But I do want big windows with blinds 🥰

Mouldyfeet · 15/07/2022 12:19

@BeneficiaryMadness your friend is bonkers! I went to Legoland with my son and it was 30 degrees (pre-booked tickets and hotel), we only lasted 4 hours and he was too hot, I was too hot. Most unpleasant experience ever!

drum123 · 15/07/2022 12:20

Haven't read the whole thread so apologies if this tip has been shared already. Fill a suitable container, like a hot water bottle, with water and put it in the freezer. At bedtime, wrap it in a tea towel, or hand towel and use it to co your feet during the night. It's a life saver for me!

Eatthecake80 · 15/07/2022 12:21

Says 37 Monday/Tuesday where I live but mostly cloudy 🤷🏻‍♀️

drum123 · 15/07/2022 12:21

Cool your feet, obviously, not co!

I can recommend this neck fan - www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B091DH2PR3?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_dt_b_product_details.

My husband bought me one a few weeks ago and I am so glad I have it now! I bought my mum one four days ago and I believe the price has gone up a little since then. Definitely worth the price.

Thank you for this post, I’d no idea this product existed. As I’m having to drive for 3 hours for work on Tuesday, in a car with broken air con which is throwing out hot air that I can’t turn off, I’m very grateful for this!
