It was weird on Radio 4 news earlier this evening that they followed the Met Office statement with some numpty MP saying the stuff about "well, we go on holiday, what's the fuss?" As if they felt they had to provide a sort of spurious balance of opinion.

Very glad that I live in the NE atm.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/07/2022 23:09

I think the bbc have some sort of obligation to 'balance' with the fringe Tory views.

Thanks kitten.
So there a small chance it won't hot 40!

It seems there are 10 problematic hours in the day to get through.
I think by 9am it will be 29???

I've got some sheets and towels to put up outside our windows which get sun at peak time . It's. Cool ish House but the sun hit's at its hottest. I've got an old duvet cover to nail up outside and a sheet for inside . We had a new amtico floor Laid last December and I heard someone say once the glue melted!

Of course the trouble and expenses of a new floor is not fun but I'm more worried about the glue gasses.

PaperTyger · 15/07/2022 23:32

Omg the mirror has 41??

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/07/2022 23:37

I think there's a 40-50% chance still that we won't reach 40c, but yes, we could reach 41c.

@Silverswirl yes DDs school have air con in the classrooms, but we have a 30 min trip either way and I’m not 100% confident with schools sensibility, Sports day they didn’t allow reception to bring their drinks out and said ‘oh we will just have a sit down and a big drink when we get back to class’.
they were outside for an hour and a half in the sun, luckily all the parents had water because DD and all her friends were asking us for a drink.

We live in a Victorian terrace where one side is completely south facing and one is north facing and doesn’t get direct sunlight on one half of the house. I will more than likely send her to school but I don’t want to get there and find out school haven’t taken full head of the warnings.

ListenLinda · 16/07/2022 06:42

Sorry, so keeping her cool at home would be easily do able. I dont want her to miss her last week with her friends, but nor do I want a poorly child.

Was that the one who said younger people are cosseted and “snowflakes melt in the heat”?
Also older people who “lived through the war” wouldn’t be worried. True as most are no longer alive anyway.
It’s really quite concerning that a) these people exist and b) the BBC gives them airtime.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/07/2022 09:21

I've just lost my Internet, so on my phone which makes things a little tricky!
C/p wavy hands forecast from other thread:

Morning all! Some hand waving ball park temperatures for you. Please remember I am an amateur. I do get things wrong womsetimes! please use the Met Office for your actual forecasts.

Generally a very similar picture to yesterdays models.
Tomorrow: much of England (away from the NW) and Wales will see temperatures in the high 20s, with some places in the low 30s by mid afternoon. Cooler by the coasts.

Monday: hot!
Wales low to Mid 30s.
England (away from far NW coasts) Anywhere could see temperatures in the mid to high 30s, with the SW and coasts being the coolest. I think we need to remind people that if you are in the amber area, it is amber, not red, simply because the very high temperatures are less probable for you. GFS has recently introduced 39c further west than previously modelled. Some places may see 40c, these places are most likely to be around the eastern central areas.

Overnight Monday - many areas not seeing below low to mid 20s. This night will be horrible.

Tuesday: By mid morning temperatures in the mid to high 30s for many away from western and southern coastal areas. Then the main questions are really about how high temperatures will go and how quickly cooler air comes in from the south west.
Currently it is still certainly possible that temperatures will go to around 40c in the red warning area and perhaps a low chance of them going a little higher. Perhaps others outside that area may see temperatures touching 40, but this is a lower probability. Then it currently looks as though through the evening and night cooler air comes in from the SW.

Will the heat come back? GFS introduces the idea of a new heatwave for the last week of July, Fortunately temperatures are currently modelled to be rather less hot than this one.

Hotspotted my tablet. It did make me realise as I was restarting my router: check your routers, laptops, desktop pcs for dust and if you can remove it! Bolded as it is vital to help your equipment stay cooler.

Advice for Londoners, that would also apply to Manchester and any other cities I can't think of in the red area.

I get that but why would she be poorly? She’s learning all day in an air conditioned classroom.
The 30 min journey- is that walking / public transport or in an air conditioned car?

RedToothBrush · 16/07/2022 11:15

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/07/2022 14:14

It's still clear that people just don't get it. The alert system isn't based on 'It's too hot moanometer' it has been drawn up around evidence based impacts.

Any thermometer recording over 40c in the past in the UK (with perhaps an exception on 25th July 2019) will either be a poor thermometer, one that has been badly sited, or one that hasn't been properly shielded.

I think my problem is the way the media whip everything into a frenzy and it becomes like Dad's Army in mentality rather than people just being sensible.

School closures are ridiculous in the sense that they are not consistent and not logical. The lesson we should have learnt from covid is that kids in school are safer than home. If kids aren't on school, they are likely to be doing dickish things like jumping into quarry lakes and reservoirs. Or in hot tower blocks, which are warmer than schools. Or unsupervised generally. And then on the other hand you have schools being ruddy ridiculous and continuing to go ahead with sports day.

The problem with having it as an official red warning rather than a simple warning, is that people are being hysterical and irrational and that actually ends up almost being counterproductive because of the unintended consequences of people losing their braincells.

What we actually need is considered, measured guidance rather 'argghh we are all going to die'.

ListenLinda · 16/07/2022 11:28

@Silverswirl part walking part bus.

If school aren’t sensible (as they weren’t on sports day) then there is the potential for some of them to be, during play & lunch times.
she got a touch of sun stroke while we were in Turkey, it wasn’t as hot there as it is supposed to be Monday & Tuesday.

as it is, school are open and staying so, so she will be going in as it stands at the moment.

User6784097 · 16/07/2022 11:44

I want to keep my kids off but school have announced water fights on Monday and Tuesday and they are both desperate to go!

Piggywaspushed · 16/07/2022 12:39

God, the environmental message there is so irresponsible. No doubt the petrol station opposite my school will be cashing in selling supersoakers again.

Mental.

Christ. Imagine trying to get them all to follow instructions after that. I think that’s completely crackers.

SpamhappyTootsie · 16/07/2022 12:55

Fabulous. Our water has gone off. Two postcode areas, so pretty extensive, which never bodes well where United Utilities are involved. They need to get their act together and get water to everyone if it continues beyond a few hours.

ToadiesCouzin · 16/07/2022 13:07

I mean, who makes these sorts of decisions, do the school leadership have no sense. The advice is to stay inside and reduce activity, but no, the school decides it's a good idea to get them all running around, chasing each other, and presumably outside. If I was there parent I would not be happy about them being so irresponsible, putting children at risk, for what? If they must be open, can't they sit them all down in a cool classroom or in some shade watching a movie or doing some colouring?

ToadiesCouzin · 16/07/2022 13:08

That was a reply to @User6784097 btw!

AuntMarysPinny · 16/07/2022 13:25

@OhYouBadBadKitten thank you for this very helpful thread. Do you have any advice on what to do to help the elderly on Monday and Tuesday? I have a 90 year old great aunt who is ferociously independent, lives on her own, unfortunately far from me. She's never been in 40 degree heat before (neither have I!) and I'd like to send her a heat care package but don't know what would be the best things to include in it!

Grumpybutfunny · 16/07/2022 13:27

It's currently 37 in sharm, 34 in Florida, 32 in Milan and 33 in Rhodes. Their schools don't have air con especially sharm and the kids survive happily. Will be freezing a couple of water bottles for DS, P20 before he goes and a hat. Count down the hours until 3pm when it's meant to be hottest so we can play in the paddling pool. Wish our school was having a water fight.

Do the people worrying never go on holiday in the summer sun? When we go away DS runs around in the heat playing games most the day

howshouldibehave · 16/07/2022 13:31

It's currently 37 in sharm, 34 in Florida, 32 in Milan and 33 in Rhodes.

I wonder how many of those schools have broken up for the summer?

We go on holiday to hot places, yes, but tend to spend the time at a slow leisurely pace-reading, swimming and snoozing, not sitting in a room with 30 other hot bodies.

BiasedBinding · 16/07/2022 13:38

When was it previously 37C there? Was it yesterday? last week? Several years ago? What will the temperature be tomorrow? Similar, or 10-15C cooler? Gosh it’s almost like places have different climates and people are accustomed to different.

I don’t go on holiday to hot places because hot weather makes me feel ill, and I don’t let my children run around in the heat, as they are similar. Are we allowed to not look forward to the next couple of days? Do we have your permission? We’ll cope because we are healthy and can alter our lifestyle for a couple of days, but I’m not going to enjoy it and I’m not going to pretend to.

BiasedBinding · 16/07/2022 13:39

It’s actually quite funny how many people can’t imagine a holiday that isn’t to somewhere hot and sunny!
