General discussion is www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4583720-we-need-to-talk-about-the-weather-and-the-potential-for-extreme-heat but I wanted this to be seen by as many people as possible.

You daughters class has air con and you arnt sure about sending her in.
God MN is bizarre sometimes.

Trip to school, trip home. Possibility of air-con failure if the power shuts down.

colouringindoors · 15/07/2022 18:09

@CPEBatch Totally agree. We're nowhere near co2 reductions that would even slow, let alone halt increase in global temperatures. There's no going back.

knittingaddict · 15/07/2022 18:10

My grandson's primary schools have sent an email to say that the children are allowed to wear whatever they are coolest in and that there is a possibility that the schools will close, but they were awaiting a local authority decision.

bathorshower · 15/07/2022 18:13

To those saying that those in hotter countries cope, you do adapt somewhat (physiologically) but that takes weeks. Where I am, it's a rather warm 24C today. It's forecast (BBC) to be 40C on Monday. That's a massive jump, with no chance of physical adaptation. It's not going to be fun.

Tbh, it took me several months to adapt, even a bit, and even when I sort of did, I was still aware I was very hot and dripping with sweat much of the time.

Hmmm, we took DD to the NH museum a few years ago on a hot day and my most prominent memory is of how it was baking in there!

Yes, one of my colleagues said this earlier when I mentioned it! Thankfully the trip has now been cancelled.

Yeah but maybe a much higher possibility of overheating if stay at home. Have to weigh it up

LondonWolf · 15/07/2022 18:58

Because some equipment is heat sensitive and might fail.

I'd forgotten about this, when I was in Abu Dhabi once I left my iphone in the sun for about half an hour - similar temps 42 degrees - it didn't work for a few hours, it had shut itself down to protect itself from the extreme heat and I had to wait for a couple of hours for it to be functional again.

CrunchyCarrot · 15/07/2022 19:06

I may have missed it if someone has already posted this, but if you take any medications, or indeed have any in your house, please put them in the coolest place you have (NOT the fridge - unless your medication requires refridgeration) so that they don't degrade in the heat.

Most medications are only guaranteed by manufacturers to be viable up to a certain temperature (I believe it's 30'C) so it's worth placing your pills somewhere cooler. I said 'not the fridge' because it's damp, and that too can degrade pill ingredients.

If your meds are affected they may change colour or texture, or have a nasty taste, so be aware of that.

In my house I keep pills in my bedroom but that will be the hottest room so I've put them in a box and have moved them to a cooler room, near floor level.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/07/2022 19:16

TheWeatherOutlook have put together a mush of various relevant models to try and create a prediction as to whether the UK record will be broken and whether 40c will be surpassed. Depending on how they've put this together, their estimates may differ from other estimates.

this is good advice. DS1 has many medications and we usually need to be temp aware (In theory) but rarely in practice! I have put his epipens in our coolest room.

We had 40 in May (not uk)
My kitten loved playing with ice cubes. Apparently it helps to cool animals down through their paws and noses

Singapore zoo have polar bears Hmm. I recall well watching massive ice blocks with fish frozen inside tossed into their enclosures for them to play with. They loved it. I was always a bit concerned about how they cope considering how well upholstered they are.

Thanks for that table but unless I'm misunderstanding it the fourth line of figures in the matrix contains a couple typos and the "Cs" that should actually be %'s.....😉

Least I hope they are typos....

Minimalme · 15/07/2022 19:48

I have had to spend the last of our money on fans for kids and cool mats and collars for our three pugs.

I am going to move our sofas into the dining room which is the coolest room in the house - mainly for the pugs as they like to snooze the day away in the living room and I'm not sure they could cope with less comfort Grin

I have bought two big bags of ice for drinks and to make cool foot baths and I will keep the youngest two kids off school. Our car doesn't have air con and I can't face driving to pick them up.

DH is finding my planning for the heat utterly hilarious right now.

We are in the extreme heat zone and I am quite looking forward to making him apologise for being a tit in return for a fan.

@OhYouBadBadKitten

Can you explain the chart please, I don't understand it ?

PaperTyger · 15/07/2022 19:53

Oh for a large chest feezer in which to put lot's of ice! I'm working with teeny geezer space.

NCHammer2022 · 15/07/2022 20:02

Nursery have sent us their plan for Monday and Tuesday, (“only” forecast 30-32 here but that’s more than we’re used to and it’s in the city centre) - it all sounds really sensible and like they’ve got it under control, but I’d have to either pick DD up on public transport or it’s a 40 minute walk and I don’t fancy either of those options so am toying with the idea of just taking a couple of days flexi if I can. Work have said we can work from home if we want and relaxed all dress codes for the office if we have to go in.

Yes Smile based on how they have amalgamated several different weather models, they've calculated we have over an 80% chance of getting the highest ever UK temperature next week and over a 50% chance of a station reaching 40c or over.

It's interesting how different forecasts give a different max temp.
I'm in Yorkshire.
BBC gives it 37 Monday 38 Tuesday.
Met Office gives it 32 Monday 36 Tuesday.
Metcheck are actually insane and have 36 Monday 43 Tuesday.

I'm hoping it doesn't get to 43.

DandelionPocket · 15/07/2022 22:16

@Plasmodesmata I noticed that too, in the unusual position of praying it's 'only' 34 as per Met office and not 40 as per BBC.
