Our lives may not change, but our grandchildren's lives almost certainly will be unrecognisable from what we know now.

Our lives are changing now though - if you live in many parts of the world your life really is changing right now. It's not generations away unfortunately.

Cocoabutterformula · 02/01/2022 00:34

It's often mild this time of year so I'm not worried in the slightest.

Omg - does it have to to be spelt out in huge letters? It's not a couple of days here or there it's the general upward trend, the climate is undeniably warming at the behest of humans.

NinaDefoe · 02/01/2022 00:42
@froobie it's so freaky isn't it. I'm sure someone will try to claim that global warming nonsense.
IKR!
Some people say that the Earth is round too!
I mean, WTAF?

🙄🤪

This year the weather has been off by about a month. We had a very late spring and now we are having a late winter. Let's see where things are in a few weeks before predicting doom and gloom.
I'm No global warming denier. There is no doubt that the planet is warming. There is no denying that we humans have done a hell of a lot of damage to this planet. How much of the warming is exclusively our fault is a point of discussion.
But we are an incredibly adaptive species. We will overcome and I doubt the human race will die out. And if we do well the planet won't! This planet has warmed and cooled on numerous occasions and yet here we are.

I don't see how me freaking out will benefit humanity.

Oh well that's good. Someone tell Michael Mann that JaneJeffer has pointed out that it's often mild this time of year.

Never heard of him.

Humans probably won't die out. But the earth will be a very different place for our grandchildren.

And before we get there, we will see famine. Drought, wars, mass migration. Not a legacy we should be willing to accept

JollyHostess · 02/01/2022 01:20

I'm pretty sure we've been having these mild, wet winters for a a few years now. The last properly cold winter that I can remember was 2012 and since then it's been common to have a few days of 14 or 15 degrees in December/January. One year we had 22 degrees in February didn't we?

Not saying it's a good thing of course.

Cocoabutterformula · 02/01/2022 01:22

Why doesn't that surprise me Hmm

That's the unpalatable bit no one wants to hear understandably. Maybe it's why people like JaneJeffer can affect to be proud about not knowing who one of the leading climatologists in the world is...

I said I never heard of him where do you get that I'm affecting being proud?

You need to get help if your anxiety over the weather is this bad honestly.

Dottydozet · 02/01/2022 01:50

Colour me surprised.

I think what I was trying to say (but didn't) is that climate change is clearly happening and has demonstrably changed our weather for the last few years.

What will need to happen for people to start believing it though? Even I struggle facing the reality of what's coming and would much rather not think about it.

sweetbellyhigh · 02/01/2022 04:16

@MasterGland

An interesting read. The elephant in the room is that, in order to reduce emissions fast enough, we must severely limit our production and consumption of goods. This will lead to a significant drop in living standards in the West that most people will refuse to accept. I think the fate of humanity is sealed, unfortunately.
Yes the bottom line seems to be that most people are too greedy to support positive change.

The changes required must be legislated but I'm not sure there's a government on the planet genuinely committed to doing what's required. And that's because they represent the people who, by and large, are selfish consumers.

We humans are our own worst enemies.

ElftonWednesday · 02/01/2022 04:21

Last spring was very cold in the SE of England, it was single figures right up to May and it so was a really poor growing year for veg. Last winter it was definitely cold enough to snow a few times, I remember it being pretty average and dry.

I don't mind it being mild now, but I'd like to stay like this and never ever go cold, but it will probably be cold and unpleasant when the weather is usually getting better.

ElftonWednesday · 02/01/2022 04:31

Depends what you mean by greedy. No-one has ever successfully painted a picture of what a zero carbon economy looks like in terms of every day life. If it means going back to pre-industrial society that can fuck off. What seems to be going on now is that nearly anything green or sustainable just means more effort and cost, a lot of it is just green washing, and there is a lot of taking more money out of people's pockets for things like energy bills to fund some Russian oligarch's lifestyle.

BinChicken3 · 02/01/2022 05:18

Climate change, and it’s not a good thing at all.

Dottydozet · 02/01/2022 08:41

If it means going back to pre-industrial society that can fuck off.

Not quire but it basically means capitalism and constant growth needs to be pretty much abandoned. No constant production of new stuff, no air travel, no buying mango at the supermarket in January. Basically going back to a much simpler way of life. The planet can't sustain our way of life as it is now.

I mean it's either that or what will happen is human beings will end up in wars over water, food and resources and that in the UK, they starve to death. I don't think people actually realise how bleak the future is for their children, never mind grandchildren. It's not just that our summers will get hotter.

Dottydozet · 02/01/2022 08:53

Biggest thing that needs to happen at a societal level is use of fossil fuels needs to stop. Completely.

MarshaBradyo · 02/01/2022 08:57

@Dottydozet

Will we have a habitable planet in 70 years?

We aren't talking 70 years. Try 30. Try 20. Try 10.

Uninhabitable when and which areas

I don't understand how people are still procreating, given the state of affairs.
Dottydozet · 02/01/2022 09:12

Everywhere. In Britain it will be lack of food that gets us.

Dottydozet · 02/01/2022 09:13

Well firstly it's human instinct.

Secondly people don't realise how bad it is going to get, in this country. They think it just means the weather is going to get hotter.

How long have we got - are you saying ten years and then all over?
