Not even remotely freaked out. It will be snowing in a couple of weeks. This is all a lot of hoo-har about nothing. It was the warmest NYE on record yesterday, but we have had warmish Decembers before.

If it stays 13-14 C and above, for the rest of the first half of January, then goes to 20 C by the second half, and then gets to 28-29 degrees C in mid February, and then 35-36 C in early March, THEN I will start to be a bit concerned. Right now, I don't think anything of it.

@CovidisaThiefofJoyandcandoone You are entitled to your opinion ....

All the posters with their heads firmly in the sand because ‘it’s easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism’.

Postdatedpandemic · 01/01/2022 22:15

@Nenemum irony in action Grin

To answer the OP, no specific weather event freaks me out, the long-term trend revealed by the data freaks me out.

Nenemum · 01/01/2022 22:16

@Postdatedpandemic I know, it’s a link tailored to typical mummynet users Grin

RobotValkyrie · 01/01/2022 22:16
@RobotValkyrie you are in an excellent position to present to readers here a simple and unbiased scientific summary.
Not at 10pm on New Year's Day, got better things to do with my time Brew...
(like nursing a hangover)

... Guess you do have a point that this isn't a great place for science talks, not because of the lack of qualified mums (you'd be surprised! The Coronavirus board was an eye-opener for me. Very interesting threads on various stats), but rather because Mumsnet's impact factor is a bit low compared to Nature, and actual scientists tend to save their writing efforts for things that will advance their careers (sorry/not sorry)

Agree with this. One warm day isn’t worrying by itself and climate change will still be real even if we go on to have the coldest January on record.

Agree.

@StopStartStop

Nah, I remember similar days over fifty years ago, around Christmas.
I bloody don't!

I'm 68.

It terrifies me how quickly the climate seems to be warming, and how quickly many species seem to be disappearing

Nenemum · 01/01/2022 22:24

@RobotValkyrie I agree wholeheartedly with your final sentence. Enjoy your evening Brew I’ll raise a mug of Yorkshire to you.

Magnited · 01/01/2022 22:31

.

Lifeisbeautiful01 · 01/01/2022 22:34

I had a fly in my house on Xmas Day- bloody crazy!

Postdatedpandemic · 01/01/2022 22:36

@RobotValkyrie do you think it is easier to get funding for a PHD in human extinction pathway and the advantages of a pandemic now than it was in the eighties?

MerryChristmas21 · 01/01/2022 22:36

@Dottydozet

Random people posting about being 'worried or terrified' aren't listening to the scientists, they're just flapping. No help to anyone.

Read my posts. Not what I'm doing.

You didn't do it, but you defended it.

I can't be done with arguing with someone with such poor comprehension.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/01/2022 22:36

Robot I do think we need to keep bringing science into these forums though. It needs to reach a wider audience.

Yes this!
I remember Christmas Day about nine or ten years ago, the smokers were going out back for a cig. It was unusually warm and not remotely cold

I also remember going out shopping in mid February one year and again we were out without coats sitting at an outdoor cafe, It was unusually warm. But I do recall the weather changed and we had thick snow by Easter.

So no not freaked out!

Do you not understand that the trends are all on an upward trajectory though? The odd anomaly doesn't matter, that graph a few pages back does matter. It matters enormously.

Walkaround · 01/01/2022 22:42

Unfortunately, Nature only has an impact on other scientists, not on human behaviour.

Magnited · 01/01/2022 22:46

The sun is no higher or lower than it should be for this day. It is just that you saw it! @AnyFucker Around 3:30pm is a good time.

I mowed the lawn today. Never mowed it after first week of October and last week of March before. Until this year when I mowed it in February.

But today I mowed it. On New Year's Day - unheard of in the UK. 14 degrees and it grows faster than bananas ripen. We are in the Midlands and I need to cut it to ensure the frost on Wednesday onwards does its trick to the thatch and bugs. There are millions here, whitefly still active in the vegetables. They fly out like a nuclear explosion of dandruff.

In the 1970's and early 1980's it snowed a lot in December. Now its a grey, damp, rain and fog. But its not exactly winter fog or a late Summer mist. It is somewhere in between. That is the scariest thing. The weather needs new descriptions now.

Postdatedpandemic · 01/01/2022 22:46

If I want to discuss preprints and moving science Nature is not where I would go. Unless I had no contacts or friends.

JaneJeffer · 01/01/2022 22:47

It's often mild this time of year so I'm not worried in the slightest.

MasterGland · 01/01/2022 22:50

An interesting read. The elephant in the room is that, in order to reduce emissions fast enough, we must severely limit our production and consumption of goods. This will lead to a significant drop in living standards in the West that most people will refuse to accept. I think the fate of humanity is sealed, unfortunately.

Frauhubert · 01/01/2022 22:52

Hmm, i walked through London 10 years ago in January. I remember it was 18 degrees. Then it snowed for Easter.
