Storm Ciara forecasts and reports

First met office warnings for the month are
www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2020-02-03 for Scotland. Gusts up to 80mph (perhaps more in isolated spots) for many.

In general it looks like it could be quite a stormy month with a lot of potential showing from the 9th onwards. Might be worth looking at your fences in the south before then Wink

OhYouBadBadKitten, Gloria and PPs, thanks so much for this thread, it's been amazing to see how widely the storm has affected people.

Poor old Yorkshire Sad I've a few friends and family around York, it looks awful for them. Hope everyone is safe.

Also the thread has been v helpful in seeing when the squalls would be coming through and being able to think "this is going to pass soon!"

I have spent most of the day on trampoline watch, I wasn't able to turn it over so yesterday I weighed it down with sandbags and some sacks of bark chips etc from the shed. Even then it still looked dodgy when one of the squalls went through and I thought it was going to go - but luckily it didn't. I can't believe people find it funny, I've been terrified all day that it was going to go flying and hurt someone/damage something.

Xiaoxiong · 09/02/2020 18:37

Thanks all - luckily the landlord had a handyman on standby in anticipation of storm damage! Broken windows have been boarded up, glass swept up and all the other windows duct taped in anticipation of the scaffolding going up next Friday to sort it out properly. Thank goodness!!

I couldn't believe how far up the road there was shattered glass, I was still finding shards a good 50 meters away from the house carried by the force of the wind.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/02/2020 18:43

Yorkshire has had it hard. Looking back over the models and forecasts, I think that probably the met office were closest to the estimated wind speeds - some of the models such as ECM and Arpege over estimated the wind gusts by around 10mph.

One thing that is clear though, was that none of us seemed to pick up on the sheer amount of rain, torrential doesnt in hind sight seem to have covered it adequately and the met office could have issued some rain warnings.

I should have save the trampoline comments for a separate thread really. I don't want this one to descend into any sort of arguments. I was just feeling a bit cross.

Of course we still have a lot of weather to come this week, over night gales tonight, and well through into Wednesday at least. (I've not looked beyond, I'm knackered!) More rain and also snow as mentioned above.

Don't put power cut kits away yet, in my experience, minor gales after major ones can cause problems as trees just hanging in there lose the will to stay up and there may well be many being held up by power cables.

It's going to feel much colder tomorrow than it has, with temperatures in low single digits in the south to start. Couple with wind and flooded roads it's going to be an unpleasant start to the week for many. (pity me as I have to cycle to the station through minor flooding at dark o'clock tomorrow!)

Xiaoxiong Which way did the glass travel out of curiousity?

Just had a heavy rain storm on the east edge of East Sussex. Power still off and not expected until 10pm now, I'll be surprised if it is then. So many power cuts and only so many engineers and they have to travel in this! EE network still down here so I'm the only one with Internet.
Had dinner by candlelight and DS1 (13) is playing guitar for us... I love a power cut!

JacquesHammer · 09/02/2020 18:48

It’s been raining steadily here for the past hour. Wind picking up again and rain much heavier.

We won’t make the news. We never do. I can see a number of business not recovering.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 09/02/2020 18:52

Been windy today in the SW, but nothing like other places in the UK.

UtterlyPerfectCartoonGiraffe · 09/02/2020 19:12

It got pretty intense at around 3:30/4pm ish in Cambridgeshire. The wind picked up massively. We’re protected on two sides by other houses, but the other two sides it’s nothing but flat fenland beyond our fence (which has taken an absolute battering but is still - fingers crossed - standing). We’re used to getting wind here because of that, but this was the first time we’ve ever been able to hear the deep bass rumble of it, for about half an hour. That was more than a little spooky! Hope everyone is holding up as well as can be. Flowers

ElloBrian · 09/02/2020 19:19

Where are you @JacquesHammer?

windymillersmill · 09/02/2020 19:27

Bloody hell, I'm not normally one to be scared of the wind but what it's like now is making earlier seem like a gentle breeze.

WreckTangled · 09/02/2020 19:28

I'm home! Got less than a mile from home and the road was closed but just went round (it's all back roads anyway). The motorways and A3 were surprisingly busy coming home

Kittywampus · 09/02/2020 19:31

It got really intense here (Sussex coast) around 6pm, including torrential rain (hoping that it has given my car a good clean Wink). Now the clouds have cleared and there is a beautiful full moon.

lifeonprivetdrive · 09/02/2020 19:36

The EA has downgraded its severe flood warning where I live (personally it doesn’t affect me - I am at the top of the hill) to a low level flood warning, but, the forecast is for 12 hours of heavy rain.

Then of course it’s all coming down off the dales so even without rain there will be water.

Xiaoxiong · 09/02/2020 19:44

Kitten the window faces south-east, and opens to the left so when it swung open it swung to the northwest and all the glass was blown up the road to the northwest. We are in a big block, across from another big block, so the wind generally gets funnelled up our road from the southwest to the northeast at the best of times.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/02/2020 20:07

ok, yes, that makes sense, Xiaoxiong thank you :)

Well done Wreck good to hear you are safely back.

Hang in there those still feeling the elements. It will calm some. Still fairly wild where I am but it will continue to be. I guess there are going to be some school caretakers getting into school and finding some unwelcome damage in the morning.
