Storm Ciara forecasts and reports

First met office warnings for the month are
www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2020-02-03 for Scotland. Gusts up to 80mph (perhaps more in isolated spots) for many.

In general it looks like it could be quite a stormy month with a lot of potential showing from the 9th onwards. Might be worth looking at your fences in the south before then Wink

Just experiencing the worse rain I think I've seen since moving back to UK 8 years ago. Yes, yes to the previous poster who said felt like the house being pressure washed. Hunkered down watching the cricket. Fingers crossed the power stays on. Wiltshire.

My friends are currently on a ferry to Portsmouth which set off from Spain last night. I really feel for them.

@OhYouBadBadKitten I rent not own so landlord will have to repair it. I’m not sure what they are called! Bucket is in the garage.... to get to the garage I have to walk where the tiles came down!

Anyone know what’s under those tiles, the ones on the straight part of the roof? Don’t they have some sort of plastic sheeting?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/02/2020 15:09

No Wreck. You'll be driving into the squall line I'm afraid. It's not as aggressive as it was when it went through Manchester/yorkshire, but the southern half is pepping up.

I think if it were me, I'd consider getting a meal afterwards (I know it's not great food wise there) and sitting it out but I'm struggling to work out timing for you. Give me a mo.

There should be some woven fabric under the tiles. Pm @PigletJohn and ask about it!
Don't go where the tiles are falling.

Squall here in Cambs now. Terrifying tbh as we’ve lost part of our outbuilding roof. I dread to think of the damage still to come

wheresmyhairytoe · 09/02/2020 15:14

wondering I have the same problem. About 6 ridge tiles down, no idea what to do.

colouringinpro · 09/02/2020 15:14

squall line has hit!!!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/02/2020 15:19

Its really hard to know what to advise Wreck. You are going to be going through some very heavy rain no matter what. If it were me, I'd wait until it passes at the O2, then head down, hopefully while it's still light so you can see debris and standing water and be prepared for a lot of flooding. The squall looks to break up after passing London, so it shouldn't be quite as fierce. Which route are you taking?

Good luck colouring

cheninblanc · 09/02/2020 15:21

We're six hours without power now, it's cold, very windy and getting fed up. Had a hot meal in local morrisons but I want to be warm again 😔

WreckTangled · 09/02/2020 15:22

M25 then a3. Thanks for your advice always appreciated.

Shimy · 09/02/2020 15:25

Anyone been up the M1?

Piggywaspushed · 09/02/2020 15:26

Just got really wild for a while in Bedford so I am guessing that was your squall line?

Frouby · 09/02/2020 15:26

Had a calmish, sunnyish hour in south yorks. Wind picking up again now though and it's gone all hazy rather than cloudy.

It's all a bit apocalyptic really. Flood warnings issued a couple of hours ago and at least 1 route out of the village flooded, plus trees down on other roads.

Piggywaspushed · 09/02/2020 15:28

Trains delayed now around West Hampstead because of mysterious trespassers on line. Do you think people were trying to get their trampolines back??

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/02/2020 15:30

Good plan Wreck take it gently!
we gave lorries an extra lanes wide berth this morning!
That's the one Piggy

Great thread OYBBK!

Crabonastick · 09/02/2020 15:34

Oh we need to fly to Heathrow from Berlin in a couple of hours. I’m dreading it. I’m a nervous flyer as it is. Hoping there’s some sleeping pills I can pick up at the airport 😭

GlowWine · 09/02/2020 15:35

Whoa there's the rain/squall in Cambridge now.

wheresmyhairytoe · 09/02/2020 15:37

Bright sunshine in East Yorkshire now. Is that it or is it coming back?

winningwhilstlosing · 09/02/2020 15:38

Oh my goodness. I don’t think I have ever heard such heavy rain - it is making me feel really panicky.

lifeonprivetdrive · 09/02/2020 15:39

Oh Crab you poor thing - I am not the best at flying even though I used to fly weekly. Can you have a gin and tonic or something if not.

It feels like it is really cooling down here.

I have just looked at the met office for me and it’s forecasting snow Tuesday-Wednesday and heavy snow on Thursday - I hope not 😞.

Froq · 09/02/2020 15:40

Is Lincoln due to see any more squall lines?

Just had a worrying call from my elderly aunt who lives there and assured me all is calm and clear now so she’s going to take the dog for a walk. I don’t want her out in anything dangerous.

GlowWine · 09/02/2020 15:42

3 minutes of mayhem and now it's back to 'just very windy' and I can see breaks in the cloud in the distance. The rain was horizontal, you could see how aerodynamic (not!) the shed and fence are. Still standing but I wouldn't be surprised to see a fair bit of water came through the shed walls.

Crabonastick · 09/02/2020 15:43

@lifeonprivetdrive I’m near tears with anxiety already! We went for a nice weekend away without the kids but I’m desperate to be back with them. Kind of hoping for delays and waiting for the storm to pass. My mums just sent me a video of the wind and rain in the garden and it’s made me feel ill
