First met office warnings for the month are
www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2020-02-03 for Scotland. Gusts up to 80mph (perhaps more in isolated spots) for many.

In general it looks like it could be quite a stormy month with a lot of potential showing from the 9th onwards. Might be worth looking at your fences in the south before then Wink

Powers out in my part of Norfolk.

BettysLeftTentacle · 09/02/2020 12:16

The rains been getting for a while now and it’s gone very dark after a bright period. We’ve brought in the camping stove, lantern etc from the garage and stocked the bucket up with wood for the wood burner. Although not before it got damp Hmm

This thread is amazing. Really can't believe how widespread it all is. We're on the very outskirts of SW london/Surrey border. Had quite a bit of wind but only very light rain. Wondering if we've escaped the worst of it 🤞

My town is flooded SadSadSad
I'm fine where I am, thankfully, just cut off.
The rain was far worse than the wind here.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/02/2020 12:19

latest lightning strikes really highlight the squall line in the south. Some in the north too.

Cross your fingers that I keep power while my cake is in the oven.

very windy in SW London, no rain although my app said 90% chance of rain all day.

sovielverloren · 09/02/2020 12:25

oybbk our local FB has announced squall on its way and with you now (or where I seem to recall you are), so thinking of you and hoping my oven keeps going too!

FlamingoAndJohn · 09/02/2020 12:27

Well I’ve just got back in.
The town was empty. It sounds worse from inside than it felt outside.

JacquesHammer · 09/02/2020 12:30

The little town is flooded. My rugby club is under water Sad

Sandbags being deployed as there’s several red alerts on the river but it’s looking fairly futile.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/02/2020 12:31

There are currently three squall lines, one minor, in the SE, then a more major one just behind it. Further north there's that one that I highlighted earlier, travelling south and east. That back one is serious. Torrential rain, very very high winds and where those breaks are there's a small (emphasis small) risk of a tornado.

Our local Spotted has a post 20 minutes ago warning of fast gusts of winds. No shit Sherlock.

TwentyViginti · 09/02/2020 12:37

OhYouBadBadKitten OOOH!!!

Is Notts gonna get squalled?

beenrumbled · 09/02/2020 12:38

Quiet and calm now in Manchester.

CookiesAreForEatingNotStoring · 09/02/2020 12:39

P!ease excuse my ignorance OYBBK, but what actually is a squall line?

Thank you for all your informative threads. Pretty wild here in coastal North Devon.

Wonderingwhyme · 09/02/2020 12:40

@OhYouBadBadKitten* could you explain I’m laments terms about the squall? Is that just a very gusty, strong wind? I’m south east, about 20 miles inland and have an autistic son whom I’m trying to keep him updated of how it will (roughly!) pan out. I told him it would be getting worse about 1/2pm but it’s just picked up now, minor rain. Will this squall you mention in the SE cause more problems or has it done it’s worse?

FreezerBird · 09/02/2020 12:41

We're behind the squall lines now and it does seem to be calling down a bit. The north-east end of that back one looks Not Fun.

We had a tornado here a couple of years ago. I have never seen anything like it and hope never to again.

Perihelion · 09/02/2020 12:41

Another pic of squall lines. Grin

WobblyLondoner · 09/02/2020 12:42

Really grim in north London - torrential rain, wind and some thunder about half an hour ago.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/02/2020 12:45

squall lines are different from squally winds. They are lines of organised convection along cold fronts, like a long line of thunderstorms. (but not always thundery!) It's where you tend to see very very strong straight line winds, thunder and lightning, hail and just sometimes tornadoes can form in them.
