Storm Ciara forecasts and reports

First met office warnings for the month are
www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2020-02-03 for Scotland. Gusts up to 80mph (perhaps more in isolated spots) for many.

In general it looks like it could be quite a stormy month with a lot of potential showing from the 9th onwards. Might be worth looking at your fences in the south before then Wink

Record Atlantic crossing from New York to London in under 5 hours due to Storm Ciara

According to Flightradar24, an online flight tracking service, a British Airways Boeing 747 departing JFK airport on Saturday reached Heathrow in 4 hours 56 minutes shortly after 11.20pm.

As a nervous flier, I'm very pleased to report this fact from the comfort of my living room in my pj's Grin

Glad you're home safely, @OhYouBadBadKitten

Frouby · 09/02/2020 10:31

It's not actually too horrendous here just now in south yorks. We are at the bottom of a valley though so a bit sheltered from the worst of the winds. Dh just gone to feed the chooks on the allotment up the road, hoping they are OK. They have plenty of shelters, even if one did blow over they have another 2 to use.

Aswellaslocal · 09/02/2020 10:32

It’s the rain that’s bad here in North Yorkshire. Lots of roads shut due to flooding

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/02/2020 10:33

Thanks!

I'd like to highlight this particular squall line that is forming. See how it wriggles? That's the sign of a potentially particularly nasty squall with extra strong gusts, hail and lightning. It will move eastwards across the UK. It's the third one advancing across in this system so far.

Torrential rain earlier has now given way to sunshine and clear blue skies in Dublin. Wind in Dublin bay is 35 knots gusting 49 knots. Pretty windy still - but significantly reduced from earlier this morning.

Frouby · 09/02/2020 10:35

Oh and just checked the met office forecast for the early part of next week. More wind, more rain and maybe snow. Hate snow. Hate wind as well but hate snow more.

FreezerBird · 09/02/2020 10:37

It's not as bad at home as I'd feared it would be (winds 40moh gusting to about 60 - if I've got my knots to mph conversion right).

Glad we did the drive last night not today though.

Glad you're home safely OYBBK; I really appreciate these threads!

Beds and Herts :The nemesis for the trains appears to be plastic bags wrapped round overhead lines.

Tree down near Flitwick and Luton station closed because of roof tiles form station roof flying off and also a collapsed roof at multi storey.

DH still claims he is going to driving range in a bit!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/02/2020 10:39

Especially watch out where that squall line breaks up, like in the circle. Damaging winds are possible in those locations.

I’ve just walked down to the waterfront. Bloody hell that was hard work!

MuddyPuddlesAndPrettyBubbles · 09/02/2020 10:43

I'm near Stansted Airport. Next doors shed roof plasticky cover bit has blown off and I'm glad I took the (unusual for me!) precaution of clearing the garden yesterday. We have candles and lamps if there's a power cut, the gas hob works without electricity, and all devices charging.

LolaLollypop · 09/02/2020 10:44

Can anyone report on wind on the m25 around Essex/Herts?

I need to go and pick up my DD from Nanny's (hackney to watford) but at 39 weeks pregnant and with this storm I'm wondering whether to leave her there another day!!

My house is in the middle of that circle...

Wow it's CRAZY here in North Yorkshire. So bad that you can actually see the wind!

I've lost half my roof. New build property!

wheresmyhairytoe · 09/02/2020 10:46

Humber Bridge is now closed to all vehicles. Only the 2nd time since it opened!

daisychain01 · 09/02/2020 10:47

@poorbuthappy looks like the further north in Wales and up towards Liverpool you're located the worse you'll be hit, on the west side of UK.

South Wales, Glos, Severn Estuary, Bristol is still being hit by strong winds and heavy rain, but it's patchy rather than the intensity of the north.

TeddyIsaHe · 09/02/2020 10:47

@HavenDilemma Shock Are you all ok?

windymillersmill · 09/02/2020 10:52

Froq your guinea pigs sound as crazy as ours. Ours are all babies so they'd be flying off over the fences if they got out in the garden today.

daisy I hope the cabin crew were quick with the in flight service!

Oybbk glad you got home safely. Mumsnet needs you! Grin

I was on the train on Friday and looking at all the gardens backing on to the railway line, so many had trampolines.

I remember the storm of 1987. I lived in a high rise tower block and they had been doing work on the concrete on the roof and removing old concrete but had left some on the flat roof of the building, it was getting blown off the roof and nobody could leave the building. We had to go to a close family funeral shortly afterwards and the funeral director had been asked to drive up Box Hill because it was the person's favourite place, it was devastated with trees down everywhere. In a way I was glad that the person wasn't able to see it.

Confuseddotcommm · 09/02/2020 10:54

@LolaLollypop I’m on the border of Essex / Herts and there are trees down and extremely strong gusts. Honestly, I would avoid travelling unless it’s totally essential.

FreezerBird · 09/02/2020 10:55

It's really not as bad as I'd expected! As you can imagine winter wildness is the norm for us. It is weirdly stop-start though, and at times feels like it's coming from all different directions! (Squally is presumably the word for this!)

There's a flood alert down the road at the beach, but really only the beach area and high tide has past.

I tend to keep an eye on the local lifeboat station's weather station which is here: www.aberystwythlifeboat.org.uk/weather-station.html

lifeonprivetdrive · 09/02/2020 10:55

Power cut here in North Yorkshire. I have got my camping stove out of the garage. I live in the edge of town after years of living remotely - it doesn’t feel the same/as extreme to be without power here for some reason.
