Storm Ciara forecasts and reports

First met office warnings for the month are
www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2020-02-03 for Scotland. Gusts up to 80mph (perhaps more in isolated spots) for many.

In general it looks like it could be quite a stormy month with a lot of potential showing from the 9th onwards. Might be worth looking at your fences in the south before then Wink

@HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime that’s a good idea, what’s the best way to download? We have sky but I dont know how to download? I’m thinking of how bored dc will be later if we lose power (both autistic and rely heavily on screens to stay calm)

peridito · 09/02/2020 09:29

oh I'm a sucker for emergency kits so we need to discuss this in depth !

Can only think of thermoses of hot water and the usual candles ,torches ,charged devices .

Oh I know what's that thing where you light candles stand on something fireproof and put a flower pot over them as a heater ?

iheartspiders · 09/02/2020 09:29

Normal windy & wet day here near Dartmoor. It was noisy over night, but no fences down nearby, so just the normal weather for the region.

Still, we've planned a day in (except DH deciding he just has to drive to the next town over) and are front loading the computer games in case of a power cut! Met office seemed to suggest a peak early afternoon, so we'll wait and see if we get anything dramatic.

Rowgtfc72 · 09/02/2020 09:29

Just gone very dark on east coast. Wind seems to have died but the gusts are worse. And we have much rain.

woodencoffeetable · 09/02/2020 09:30

wondering some gas hobs will not work in a power cut, better to check the instructions.

neighbour's litter tray was just blown off 2nd floor balcony. luckily missed the windows on the way down.

cheninblanc · 09/02/2020 09:31

Oybk we are south east, I'm going to take your advice and get things sorted. Big dinner at 12 noon then everyone is also fed!!
Husband has to take his daughter home at 5.30pm 😔. I've said no way to seeing his mum on the way as she wants, drive there and get back

peridito · 09/02/2020 09:31

oh Autumn no need to aplogise ! ( how polite and lovely this thread is ) ,I welcome all replies .Thank you for responding .Wondering if it will get worse .Also wondering about quick dash into my remote from flat garden to check stuff .

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 09/02/2020 09:32

@Wonderingwhyme I normally download from Netflix or bbciplayer, not sure about sky.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/02/2020 09:32

Peridito I'm away from being able to look at the models properly, but I think London could see gusts of around 65mph. Given I saw people putting out tables and stuff at cafes, any roads that are in the right direction could be interesting.

My power cut kit is a camping stove (used inside the garage) with a little kettle, some of those emergency led lights that can be placed in strategic places, a big lamp, charged up battery packs, some easy heat food, a pack of cards and a bottle of whisky. Wink
We have a woodburning stove with a kettle that sits on top. Also an a decent ups back up power supply cos we used to get loads of power cuts that were rubbish for our computers.

peridito it is forecast to get up to 70 in my bit of north London.

It’s quite scary living on high floor on days like today!

gnomeisland · 09/02/2020 09:33

West Cornwall, stupid house on top of a hill. It's really picking up now.
Lost a roof slate about an hour ago. Have a feeling that will be the first of many.
We're used to plenty of weather but this is at the extreme end.

GloriaSmud · 09/02/2020 09:33

Some thoughts on the storm from TheWeatherOutlook and Netweather.

Titsywoo · 09/02/2020 09:34

A large bit of what looks like someones soffit or fascia has just blown into our garden Confused. Getting very windy here in Surrey. As predicted the couple who live over the road left their bins out again and both are in the road with rubbish blowing everywhere Angry. Bet they don't bother picking the rubbish up when it's calmed down either. I did it last time as it was all over my front garden.

FluffytheGoldfish · 09/02/2020 09:35

Flight from Edinburgh got of OK. Dh is a wuss and spent a lot of the flight with white knuckles due to the turbulence. I rather enjoyed it. Now waiting to book into hotel at Disneyland Paris. There is an Amber warning here till 6am tomorrow but it is OK atm.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/02/2020 09:36

I might be underestimating London's peak gusts looking at the arpegege model.

Pity poor DH who is getting a running commentary on all of this!

Wind whistled all night, but so far we haven’t had it too bad as far as I can tell. No trees down that I can see & the row of wheelie bins that are lined up against the neighbours fences (communal parking/bin area) are all as they were last night. One if the neighbours gardens I over look, it’s a bit difficult to tell if things have blown around or not as it always looks like Steptoes Yard 🤣

The corner shop hasn’t put his signs out & the one he lay down is still there & he’s left it lying down.

The tall thinner trees are getting a bit of a battering, but I wouldn’t say any worse than we frequently get (at this stage)

Piggywaspushed · 09/02/2020 09:36

In the event of power cuts at least it isn't actually really cold : silver linings....

Lots of cancelled trains round here now. Can't find any reason why : guessing branches or a tree. The high speed one has got through though. Must use a different line.

GloriaSmud · 09/02/2020 09:40

Storm Ciara showing up well here.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/02/2020 09:40

This is getting deeply unpleasant driving along.

abitoflight · 09/02/2020 09:43

They just implied on R4 that trains cancelled due to trampolines being blown on to tracks

daisychain01 · 09/02/2020 09:43

I estimate we're about 7 on the Beaufort scale, @OhYouBadBadKitten but I'm certain it will rise to 8 by lunchtime if conditions deteriorate.

The Old Severn Bridge is shut to high sided vehicles heading East and open on the West side, but I think they may shut it completely if the conditions get much worse, and make people use the New Bridge which is a lot safer.

I may have to nip outside as I can hear one of my plastic watering cans flying round our patio. I must have missed it during my pre-Ciara tidy up yesterday!

Piggywaspushed · 09/02/2020 09:44

Trampolines on lines on BBC website between Sevenoaks and London.

daisychain01 · 09/02/2020 09:44

Well, that beats "leaves on the line at Didcot" for an excuse Grin

Wonderingwhyme · 09/02/2020 09:45

Some gas hobs don’t work in power cuts?! I did not know this!! Iv used the hob in a power cut before so I’m guessing mine will always be ok in a power cut? I don’t have a camping stove..... won’t be venturing out to get one now mind! Didn’t think about the heating.... can’t remember what type of boiler i have.... I’m thinking a combi boiler. Would we not get hot water in a power cut?

BettysLeftTentacle · 09/02/2020 09:46

Cambridgeshire.
Neighbours fence has come down (serves him right for being flash and have a fenced driveway Grin) and the trees in the woodland next door have been coming down since 2am. Was awake listening to the cracking sounds all night.
