I know it will seem quite crackers to start this when the weekend has been so lovely, but we are starting to get some model consistency on GFS for the potential for snow Friday night into Saturday as a northerly plunge looks set to take place.

Primary risk areas are obviously for hillier parts of Scotland and also Wales, but higher ground in the south and south east including over dartmoor and down the east coast may also see some sleet or wet snow.

It's 3.5 degrees, with a real feel of 1 degree due to easterly wind, and torrential rain here in Dublin.

Thank you to the last few posters who have remembered to say where they are - it makes the post much more interesting.
I'm in Ipswich today where it's cold but sunny - which is good as I have a 2 hour drive home 😁

As my name suggests, I’m in Canada. I moved here from the UK seven years ago.

I’m on latitude which equates to just North of Edinburgh.

Courtesy of the honking great land mass that is Canada, we have snow on the ground from November to April-ish. Temperatures here will drop to -40 with the windchill later in the season.

Very low humidity here which results in lots of static issues. The snow is dry, so it’s great for skiing but rubbish for snowballs and snowmen as it doesn’t stick together.

Thanks glorias. Gloucestershire here & has unexpected snow today,so exciting! Huge fat flakes coming down quite thickly but was too wet to lay. My friend just a few miles away had it lay.

Perihelion · 21/11/2018 23:11

Moose we had dry snow in Edinburgh earlier this year. Was very strange.

No snow here yet, but have spotted a gritter.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 22/11/2018 02:41

Ooh Perihelion was it one of the tracked gritters with a name like Gritty McGritface?

Xiaoxiong · 22/11/2018 08:55

No snow today in East Berks but a hard frost, frozen ground and puddles. I'm pretending it's a dusting of snow though!!

Frosty here (Leicester) as well this morning ~ am also pretending this is snow!

Looks like it's warming up slightly over the weekend and into next week. There's a metoffice weather warning for thundery rain for the SW, tomorrow and Saturday.

Latest Outlook from the metoffice sort of reflects how the models are struggling a bit as to which direction our weather could come from in the next few weeks.

UK Outlook for Monday 26 Nov 2018 to Wednesday 5 Dec 2018:
Many places will be dry early next week, but often with large amounts of cloud around. Eastern and perhaps southern parts however may continue to see some showers around initially, with the a few heavier showers possible. The west and southwest of the UK will then likely turn more unsettled as we finish November, with these conditions possibly progressing northeastwards. It will generally remain on the cold side for the time of year, with the risk of some frosty nights and also some transient hill snow. Into early December, there is a lot of uncertainty in the forecast, as there is the chance of either a short-lived milder spell with winds from the west, or perhaps colder but drier weather if the winds turn more northerly or northeasterly.

UK Outlook for Thursday 6 Dec 2018 to Thursday 20 Dec 2018:
Through this period, there is likely to be a continuation of cold and mainly dry weather for much of the UK, with sunny spells and a few showers. However, there is a chance the weather pattern may change temporarily, with fronts moving in from Atlantic. This would bring longer spells of rain, interspersed with brighter, showery interludes, and it would also become less cold. However, even if this change does happen, it won't be long before we have more settled weather again, perhaps by the middle of December. This would mean a return to colder conditions, with overnight frost and fog more likely.

If there are any hikers tomorrow
www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/mountain-forecasts/brecon-beacons is something to watch for.

Potential for some snow mid week for a fair bit of Scotland away from coasts and perhaps over higher ground over northern England too.

The netweather snow risk chart is looking exciting for 12th/13th/14th Dec - or is it best not to get too carried away at this stage?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/12/2018 21:12

Don't get too excited yet. It has been there for at least a couple of days now though!

Thanks for the heads up Xmas Smile

Titsywoo · 05/12/2018 22:15

Is that for snow everywhere in that section or is the yellow green area going to be rain?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/12/2018 10:55

It's percentage risk of snow, so green is lower risk.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/12/2018 10:58

The models are lot less gung ho about it today though.

That fabulous source of weather knowledge 'iPhone weather' says snow here (Cheshire) on Saturday! Any chance @OhYouBadBadKitten @GloriaSmud ?

Iputthescrewinthetuna · 11/12/2018 07:07

IPhone weather says snow here in Birmingham on Saturday too.
Yesterday the weather was saying snow on Thursday. That has changed to cloudy!

Christmas weather thread

I'm going to try and keep the upcoming forecasts separate from the Christmas will it snow forecast linked above.

At the moment I think the media have been exaggerating the potential for snow this week (watch as I get egg on my face!)

The problem is that during this week it certainly gets cold enough but it's dry. Then when precipitation looks set to move in during the weekend it starts to warm up some and the upper air temperatures look too warm to snow in my eyes. Bit of a knife edge situation for some though!
There is certainly a good risk for snow in parts of Scotland and also higher ground in the north on Saturday.

We will see though. It may change :)

Is there any chance it will snow in Birmingham tomorrow/Thursday?

(And hopefully keep DH there an extra night or 2 so he can slow the f'ck down!!!!)

BiddyPop · 11/12/2018 09:43

(Yes, he's back again....)
