Snow watch!

I know it will seem quite crackers to start this when the weekend has been so lovely, but we are starting to get some model consistency on GFS for the potential for snow Friday night into Saturday as a northerly plunge looks set to take place.

Primary risk areas are obviously for hillier parts of Scotland and also Wales, but higher ground in the south and south east including over dartmoor and down the east coast may also see some sleet or wet snow.

Grin not really! maybe lead weights to his ankles might help?

If anyone could offer to string them to him, I'll gladly cover the costs (and throw in some battery operated lights to make it all a bit festive!!) Xmas Grin

BiddyPop · 12/12/2018 11:02

As DH was packing his bag last night, I mentioned how the snow risk had moved out towards Saturday rather than Thursday for B'ham, and he almost panicked, big time!! He hadn't heard anything about snow, and suddenly had visions of 2010 all over again (where it was an epic trip by trains, ferries and bus home from London a day late, rather than a single day trip by plane - the week of Christmas).

He was slightly Hmm about me posting about him, but glad that I knew on his behalf.

Then again, let's face it, when such disasters happen, I am the transport and logistics manager, finding hotel rooms, booking train and ferry tickets, and figuring it all out back home (including how the hell I can manage the things he was supposed to be home to cover, now that he's not!) - while he just has to find an M&S for jocks and socks (although he learned from that one to carry a spare set) and a plug to keep his phone and power banks charged.

Should I ask about Chesterfield on Monday and Birmingham on Tuesday yet?! (I think that Belfast on Wednesday is the last of his travel pre-Christmas...or so he says at least!)

GloriaSmud · 12/12/2018 21:01

Your DH should be fine those 3 days next week, BiddyPop ~ it's looking unsettled but nothing in the way of snow. No hunting for an M&S required!

Thoughts from TheWeatherOutlook and Netweather on this weekend's weather.

Yessss Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/12/2018 11:31

Lol!

It's worth bearing in mind that tomorrow snow showers could graze the eastern side and that on Saturday snow could penetrate much further south than the met office warnings suggest, perhaps tickling parts of central southern England.

I'm seeing a few mutterings about freezing rain. People will remember that we saw this during the 'beast from the east' at the beginning of the year.

Ill have a look when I've got proper access to models . It's probably the one type of weather I hate.

Oooh exciting!!!

Iloveautumnleaves · 13/12/2018 20:39

Met office? BBC? IPHONE?

Nooooope. When I want a PROPER idea of what’s about to come our way, I seek out the worlds cleverest kitten!!

I shall await your next update. Anything related to, say London, and the next few days would be truly appreciated 🤣 To risk the trains in from an hour or so south or not. I cannot get stuck there (as much as I would LOVE to!) due to a snowflake on the line.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/12/2018 21:03

There's a low chance saturday evening as autumnleaves as a front comes in from the south. It probably won't hang around for long, but something to keep an eye on.

megletthesecond · 13/12/2018 22:42

It's flippin cold this evening (north Hampshire).
Saw people scraping their cars to drive home from work at 6pm.

Iloveautumnleaves · 13/12/2018 22:46

Thanks OYBBK. I’ll keep watching.

Perihelion · 13/12/2018 23:42

Sleet and 50mph gusts on Saturday night for Edinburgh Grin

hellsbells99 · 14/12/2018 07:11

OYBBK I am driving to Leeds tomorrow to pick up DD from university. I am likely to encounter snow or freezing rain? I could just leave her there! 😉 thanks

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/12/2018 07:24

Where are you going from(ish) Hells? I'd certainly aim to leave Leeds by mid afternoon. I think there is a fairly high risk of some freezing rain or snow from early evening but it could start from around 3pm.

It looks pretty messy tomorrow - over higher ground snow accumulations could be significant from the pennines upwards. Further south, mostly wet, but perhaps snow too. Much lower chance though.

-5c down here this morning.

maybe a few flakes of snow in the east today I think looking at the radar.

Thoughts from TheWeatherOutlook and Netweather on this weekend's weather.

A chilly 2.3C here this morning but has been down to -1.9C overnight. I thought I'd go to the allotment this morning and do some digging, only to find the ground was frozen solid. Might have another go on Sunday morning when it's hopefully defrosted!

GloriaSmud · 14/12/2018 10:39

uksnowmap for seeing where it's snowing in the next day or two.

brizzledrizzle · 14/12/2018 10:44

It's certainly bitter here this morning, I didn't leave until gone 9am and still had to spray and scrape the windscreen. Jack Frost had got into our car overnight and decorated the inside of the windscreen.

MadisonAvenue · 14/12/2018 11:04

I'm getting a bit nervous about the potential for icy and snowy roads. We've got two young drivers in the house, one drove last Winter though but the other only passed a couple of months ago and apart from one lesson in the snow last Winter he's new to it. Both are far too stubborn to listen to us about not driving in it.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/12/2018 11:52

I'm sorry for the proliferation of threads at the moment. I've created a separate one for the potential for freezing rain tomorrow.
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/weather/3451166-risk-of-freezing-rain-tomorrow-sat-14th

I've pulled it out as a separate event, just because I remember how awful it was in March.

-5.5c here last night :) brrr.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/12/2018 12:22

gfs is still keen to bring in snow earlier than the met office tomorrow. Even the central south could see some in the morning according to the 06z run.
