Snow watch!

I know it will seem quite crackers to start this when the weekend has been so lovely, but we are starting to get some model consistency on GFS for the potential for snow Friday night into Saturday as a northerly plunge looks set to take place.

Primary risk areas are obviously for hillier parts of Scotland and also Wales, but higher ground in the south and south east including over dartmoor and down the east coast may also see some sleet or wet snow.

My snowflakes on BBC have all disappeared Sad That excitement for nothing!!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/01/2019 14:04

I really wouldn't rely on bbc automated output!

Going on holiday, flying from Bristol early Thursday morning so hope the M5 and Bristol area snow free then!

Delatron · 27/01/2019 14:31

borntobequiet I’m flying out Thursday morning too, from Gatwick though. My hope is that the Tuesday night snow will have cleared by then and the roads will be ok. I don’t think any is forecast for Wednesday. There was some showing up Thursday morning at one point, I hope that stays away.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/01/2019 14:38

At the moment Thursday's affair looks to be an evening/overnight one and primarily Midlands, northern england.

Currently have blustery NW wind in Edinburgh, making it feel colder than 5C.
Forecast all week is cold, barely getting above freezing. No hint of snow until Friday.....then it could get interesting Grin

Delatron · 27/01/2019 15:10

Thanks OYBBK at least that’s one less thing to worry about!

Pandasarecute · 27/01/2019 15:14

OYBK which forecast do you generally think is the most accurate? Thanks

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/01/2019 15:18

Panda in these circumstances I'd use the met office, but the worded forecast rather than the automated output. Usually the met office symbols are ok, but they are pretty inaccurate at the moment.

So looks like Tuesday night in the south east will possibly be a bit cold, possibly a light dusting, and possibly snowmaggeden? Not sure whether to pack an extra flask for the commute or dig out the sled...
saying that, DCs school popped out the usual snow warning advisory letter last week, but I had thought that was sent out just to take the edge off yet another headlice warning.

Grace212 · 27/01/2019 15:27

I hope there's more info by Tuesday as we are meant to scatter ashes on Weds. From what I can see, mum will be awake all night looking out the window and panicking...argh....

SquirmOfEels · 27/01/2019 15:30

The Met Office seems to have rather underestimated the amount of precipitation over my bit of London in the last few days - yesterday's 'light rain' was hammering down for a while.

At the moment, we have a yellow snow warning for overnight Tues and into Wed.

Grace212 · 27/01/2019 15:34

Eels, that's interesting - XC weather told me heavy rain for exactly the right time....after telling me correctly that there would be more snow than others forecast.

I hadn't looked at Met Office till I came to this thread.

LadyFlumpalot · 27/01/2019 15:53

So if I understand it correctly from my retired weather forecaster dad just now... there is a low over Greenland which will track southeast and deepen as it goes. If it goes too far north of us then rain/sleet/light snow, too far south then no precipitation at all, just right then snowmageddon.

Dad reckons the met office will hold off calling it until the last minute due the over excitement a snow forecast can bring.

Does that sound like I've understood correctly?

GloriaSmud · 27/01/2019 16:07

I think that's a good summary of the situation, LadyFlumpalot!

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 27/01/2019 16:08

We have snow forecast from Tuesday into Wednesday. ...1 to 3cm....which will no doubt bring everything to a screaming halt 😂😂😂

GloriaSmud · 27/01/2019 16:14

I've just been looking at BBC weatherman Chris Fawkes thoughts on this on Twitter and he says,

"The north side of low brings 10 to 25cm of #snow. This currently heading to north France Tuesday night with disruption. If low were to track 100miles further north (not a huge error at day 3), then we'd be more in firing line. That's why it's important to keep checking updates."

He gives a useful webpage here for seeing where the system could go.

GloriaSmud · 27/01/2019 16:15

Very likely, whywontthey Grin

xsahm · 27/01/2019 19:11

Found you all!

TokyoSushi · 27/01/2019 22:58

I note that they're being very, very secretive/cagey on BBC weather and won't forecast past Tuesday morning... it's coming!!!!

teta · 27/01/2019 23:43

We have a really clear starry night here in Shropshire. It’s the clearest night in years and is so beautiful . So if anyone’s awake please have a look outside.

PointlessUsername · 27/01/2019 23:44

I am sooo excited.

Grace212 · 28/01/2019 00:07

@TokyoSushi

they are doing their usual 10 day forecasts for my area?

can't help noticing all the forecasts are changing by the hour. OBBYK, you mentioned about XCweather being automated - still not sure what that means, but obsessive weather website watching is detecting constant change..... off to do a no-snow dance for the ashes ceremony!!

TokyoSushi · 28/01/2019 05:29

Ah, I meant the 'official' forecast on BBC news at 10 and the like. I hope everything goes well this week for you @Grace212 Thanks

Delatron · 28/01/2019 08:06

Thee BBC have snow for us starting at 5pm on Tuesday (Bucks) and The Met Office 10pm. I guess it’s tricky to tell when the rain will turn to snow. 10pm would be preferable.
