Snow watch!

I know it will seem quite crackers to start this when the weekend has been so lovely, but we are starting to get some model consistency on GFS for the potential for snow Friday night into Saturday as a northerly plunge looks set to take place.

Primary risk areas are obviously for hillier parts of Scotland and also Wales, but higher ground in the south and south east including over dartmoor and down the east coast may also see some sleet or wet snow.

It's so windy it's hard to say how much we have. Some areas 5 inches some drifts of almost 2 feet already. Another 14 hours of it until it stops so...

Knittedgnome Where are you that you've got that much snow?

We should have a designated day in January when it snows across the whole country and nobody has to go out to work or do anything they don't want to do. Gas, electricity, hot chocolate and comfort food should all be free with supplies delivered to all in the week before. Kind of like Father Xmas but Father Snow. All free of course, and hotel rooms for the homeless.

Knittedgnome · 20/01/2019 16:41

@brizzledrizzle Maine. We're getting slammed today. No leaving the house until tomorrow!

brizzledrizzle · 20/01/2019 16:43

@knittedgnome keep warm!

GloriaSmud · 20/01/2019 17:14

gttia · 20/01/2019 21:10

It is very cold in north Kent! Keep warm everyone

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/01/2019 21:17

I've got snow flake symbols for tuesday evening.

I think we could see some -7cs over night in a few eastern parts.

Sleet symbol 15:00 Tuesday. No snow symbol yet. West Surrey.

lynnepot · 20/01/2019 21:45

Urgh snow can do one. It's fun on the first day but then it freezes and is just a nuisance.

TokyoSushi · 20/01/2019 21:51

Where are you getting your symbols for Tuesday from? I want one and I want it to be snow!!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/01/2019 21:54

The met office! It's not going to be reliable for tuesday, but it's fun to hope.

TokyoSushi · 20/01/2019 21:59

Ah! I have sleet 🙄

TokyoSushi · 20/01/2019 22:01

I'll stick with that good old source - iPhone weather, which has just undergone a big change in the last hour! (West Cheshire)

Snow watch!
OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/01/2019 22:18

well, at least that means the weather is often a surprise for you. Grin

So tonight we have a band of mostly rain, possibly quite heavy moving through. It's hard to know whether it will all stay as rain, or whether some of it will fall as snow over higher ground.

Tomorrow afternoon scattered snow showers away from the far south where it will just be scattered showers. The NW and parts of the west midlands may see a more organised band of snow by mid afternoon.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/01/2019 07:35

I should say that ice may prove to be quite a problem tomorrow morning for many as skies will clear following the rain. Watch out for warnings to be issued by the met office later for this risk.

This is my weather, according to my phone, for the next week. Last week I had snow symbols - this week sunshine! My DD2 is not looking forward to it snowing anymore as she is now driving and is nervous about driving in it and had already announced that she won't be going to school if it does snow!

DD2 is starting to tell the people that she goes to Uni with that if it snows she may not be able to get in. They are incredulous as they are all at Uni in London and my DD is one of the only British students. The rest are from around the world. The one from NZ is looking forward to seeing snow in England and the one from Norway is laughing already at the excuses. The reason we have to make contingency plans is that we live in the Chilterns and if we get it we get it bad enough to cut off the hills so there is no way in or out to our village. If it goes round us we get nothing.

I agree with the poster upthread who said if only we could have snow on one particular day and get it over and done with. I would suggest that if we had to have a season of snow it would do if of a nightime whilst still being lovely in the morning but all roads clear and de-iced.

Snow watch!
BishopBrennansArse · 21/01/2019 07:53

Minus six this morning! 😮
(Guess who got a weather station for Christmas and has verified it with nearest local station on Wunderground)

brizzledrizzle · 21/01/2019 08:34

That's a brilliant idea, brizzledrizzle We can watch the snow fall, admire the stillness, go out and play in it (if people want to), then all back to normal the next day, until the same day next year!

Perfect isn't it? Gloria & OYBBK would make a fortune if only they could organise it.

Bishopbrennansarse I want a weather station now. It didn't seem that cold here because I didn't have to scrape the car - because it was the lunar eclipse we had thick fog and 100% cloud. Typical.

GloriaSmud · 21/01/2019 09:17

I have sleet forecast here (Leicester) for tomorrow afternoon and 'light snow' tomorrow evening, according to the metoffice.

GloriaSmud · 21/01/2019 09:20

Some thoughts on the weather for the week from Netweather and TheWeatherOutlook.

Titsywoo · 21/01/2019 09:37

So annoying how we are forecast heavy rain overnight - it's so cold now but typically it will get warmer into the evening instead of colder like normal so no snow. Stupid weather! I do have a snow symbol tomorrow evening but doubt it will settle after all the rain .

PointlessUsername · 21/01/2019 09:42

Metoffice is showing sleet tomorrow for my area.

Somebody has posted this on twitter just now, can it be true?

Snow watch!
GloriaSmud · 21/01/2019 10:06

There is a band of precipitation moving across the country about that time, PointlessUsername. I think the further south you are, the more likely it'll be that whatever falls is sleet/rain but for the north, it'll be snow.

Weather warnings are out for ice and snow.
