I know it will seem quite crackers to start this when the weekend has been so lovely, but we are starting to get some model consistency on GFS for the potential for snow Friday night into Saturday as a northerly plunge looks set to take place.

Primary risk areas are obviously for hillier parts of Scotland and also Wales, but higher ground in the south and south east including over dartmoor and down the east coast may also see some sleet or wet snow.

Ooh we've gone into yellow now! Exciting!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/12/2018 13:03

I'm posting a lot on the freezing rain thread, cos if the met office are right, it's pretty serious.

Thanks Kitten

the sky looks distinctly like it could snow, if that makes sense.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/12/2018 13:17

definitely. My sky does too :)

Thanks OYBBK. Travelling from the midlands up to Leeds to pick up DD but then driving to the North West.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/12/2018 17:08

It's raining here, the sky is very. very white but it doesn't look like a snow sky if that makes any sense. We had snow this time last year though so who knows.

KalindaBlack · 15/12/2018 19:37

We have an amber warning for snow up here but no sign of it yet

brizzledrizzle · 15/12/2018 21:57

"The wind had dropped, and the snow, tired of rushing round in circles trying to catch itself up, now fluttered gently down until it found a place on which to rest, and sometimes the place was Pooh's" Smile

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/12/2018 22:04

awwww, I love that. So gentle.

My bit of Edinburgh had it's snow/ frozen rain shield up mostly. A tiny bit of graupel and the rain sounded crunchy at times.....

I may have jinxed further snow here by buying 2 new foam sledges yesterday Hmm

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/12/2018 09:07

well that's done it then Peri Grin

OYBBK" I'm hoping it will be the same as my my new winter wellies arriving and having monumental rain the following day and I've always wanted a 4 handled long foam sledge, having had shot of one.... they're very fast Grin....I may grow up one day.....maybe not, I'm learning to jump in my ice skating lessons Xmas Grin

mycatistoo · 17/12/2018 17:40

6 inches here but looks like it'll melt quick.

nannynick · 21/12/2018 17:55

Does not look like any snow will come during my trip to the Scottish Highlands. Only a really small amount on nearby mountains.

Snow watch!
BlackeyedGruesome · 30/12/2018 00:21

The sun headline was saying the beast is back... (well it makes a change from the express) so it may be a little chillier than normal.

Anyone else seeing a possible snow event around the 23rd January on GFS charts? Wonder if that will stay for later model runs.

GloriaSmud · 09/01/2019 22:26

A couple of runs have been showing something like that nannynick and I've thought for a few days now, that from the 20th onwards was when the chances of 'proper' snow might occur. Looks like the metoffice have some thoughts on this as well...

UK Outlook for Monday 14 Jan 2019 to Wednesday 23 Jan 2019:
After a colder, brighter interlude for many areas on Monday, a return to milder, cloudier conditions is expected by early Tuesday. Through Tuesday, rain and strong winds will move into the northwest, with gale force winds possible in the northeast. Generally rather unsettled conditions are likely to continue for the rest of the period, with spells of rain interspersed with colder, showery weather. Snow is likely on northern hills, and perhaps to lower levels in the far north. The best of any drier and brighter interludes will be towards the south. Temperatures overall will be close to the seasonal average, but from late next week onwards there is a greater chance of cold spells giving more widespread frosts and an enhanced risk of snow, especially in the north and east.

UK Outlook for Thursday 24 Jan 2019 to Thursday 7 Feb 2019:
During the last week of January and into early February, there is an increased likelihood of cold conditions being established generally across all of the UK. This would bring an enhanced risk of snow and widespread frost, especially in the north. These notably colder conditions are by no means certain though, and even if they do occur, they will probably still be interspersed with some milder, wetter and windier interludes, especially for the south.

Ooo that sounds interesting, Gloria Grin
