Usual disclaimer - Gloria and I are amateurs, fitting this in round our home and work lives. We do our best, we sometimes get things wrong! Please don't make important decisions based on what we say, always refer to the met office website first.

I think ploughs are hopeless in this wind Lubey it's just blowing back again!

Buds that's an interesting insight, thanks!

ok, I'm going to sign off for tonight. Birgitte, I really hope he is home soon.

Freezing rain people, don't set off if it's glazed. Stuff school, stuff work unless you are essential.

Take care all, good night.

Ladyflumpalot I’m in Bournemouth.

Ladyflumpalot

Up here in North Yorkshire/Co Durham looks like I might be back at work tomorrow. Although Im confused. Still in the amber warning yet the snow that is forecast is very little snow. A few light showers here and there. That's with both Met office and Netweather. BBC shows no snow, but it said that yesterday about today.

Hope everyone stays safe and loved ones make it home OK.

LadyFlumpalot · 01/03/2018 22:02

Direct quote from my sister in Sidmouth "yeah, it's raining now, but it's freezing as soon as it lands. The doors, windows, everything is covered in ice"

ShockSad

CumBahYa · 01/03/2018 22:04

Will this freezing rain damage my beautiful snow?

LadyFlumpalot · 01/03/2018 22:09

That's what I want to know @CumBahYa :( I've sent the kids to bed with the promise of sledging tomorrow.

LadyFlumpalot · 01/03/2018 22:10

Thank you, @Jungfraujoch - your only about 40 minutes from me!

BirgitteNyborg · 01/03/2018 22:10

@LadyFlumpalot

I'm about 10 miles inland north of Bournemouth.

Lupiform · 01/03/2018 22:11

Thanks for thinking about it, Kitten, I do appreciate it.

The rail journey, which sounds long and horrid, would be via Virgin East Coast and Northern. Aberdeen to Edinburgh, Edinburgh to Doncaster and Doncaster to Hull. If anyone has any info about any of those routes, it would be very much appreciated. DH is self-employed so if he can't get there he doesn't get paid.

fortyfourfeasts · 01/03/2018 22:12

Lots of snow today in Nottingham, met office says more coming tonight but very light. But that keeps changing!

Jungfraujoch · 01/03/2018 22:19

Freezing rain is scary - never seen my windows covered so dread to think what the untreated roads and pavements will be like tomorrow particularly with more snow on top 😱

LadyFlumpalot · 01/03/2018 22:20

It's so hit and miss. My forecast is still showing as heavy snow for the rest of the night but I'm only 20 minutes away from @BirgitteNyborg and @Jungfraujoch who have Freezing Rain. It sounds like rain smacking into the window but I keep checking and it's still snowing.

CumBahYa · 01/03/2018 22:21

Also, how is freezing rain different to hail?

LadyFlumpalot · 01/03/2018 22:24

Freezing rain is snow/hail that melts as it falls through warmer air, it is then supercooled very quickly so it stays liquid as it passes through this freezing air near the ground, as it hits it freezes on impact and forms a layer of ice.

Jungfraujoch · 01/03/2018 22:25

Ladyflumpalot we are due more snow here apparently , anytime now!

IWantMyHatBack · 01/03/2018 22:26

Freezing rain is super cooled rain, so it's liquid, but when it hits, it freezes on contact. with the ground, your car, power lines etc. It forms a glaze of ice and its horrible.

CumBahYa · 01/03/2018 22:27

Oh I see, thank you. So it won't melt the lovely snow?

Wingbing · 01/03/2018 22:28

I have tweeted pics of Haldon Hill and so far Radio 4, Plymouth Herald and that newspaper have contacted me. Radio 4 wanted an interview until they realised I wasn't stuck in my car

AlabamaShakes · 01/03/2018 22:28

Vale of Glamorgan - in the red warning area.

Never seen anything like this and it's getting worse. The snow is piling up and almost reaching my letter box but it's the wind that's the most alarming. It seems to be getting louder and more fierce.

I popped my head out the front door and felt like my skin was about to shred. Couldn't see a thing!

ButtonLoon · 01/03/2018 22:29

Sometimes freezing rain soaks into the top layer of snow and makes a crust. (I loved this as a kid, you are light enough to walk on top, and then suddenly crunch fall through. Much fun!) Sometimes it forms an icy glaze on top of the snow. Less fun.

Notmyactualname · 01/03/2018 22:35

Dorset here and we have a thick layer of ice on top of the snow thanks to freezing rain for the last hour Sad

Very worried about conditions tomorrow

BirgitteNyborg · 01/03/2018 22:36

Phew, DH finally home at 10.30 pm after leaving work at 4.30 pm, a journey which only took 15 mins this morning!

Notmyactualname · 01/03/2018 22:37

The wind is pretty fierce too
