So forecasters got it really wrong then. Predicted armeggedon in London and nothing for Wales and North West. Yet quite the opposite happened😕

Cerrocoandblack · 27/02/2018 10:07

We’ve got a complete whiteout here. Hasn’t stopped for 30 mins

Hopeful looking dark grey clouds here in SE London now. May bring some snow. Was burning bright sun 20 mins ago....

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/02/2018 10:16

Forecasters can only go on what weather models tell them. They predict much further into the future than they did say 30 years ago. I always state that things will change as we get closer to the time and the models update.

When you look at where the snow streamer has laid across last night and into today, just a very small shift in wind direction or where a trough develops (just 30-40 miles or so) has made all the difference to those in London.

As we repeatedly stated earlier in the threads, small low pressures and trough disruptions occur with little warning in these conditions and we warned that this would bring snow into areas that were not being predicted at the time.

As it is, urban areas across the east south coast and in Kent and along the NE have been affected. Urban areas elsewhere will be affected. This is not a 'just confined to hilly/exposed areas event' - the upper air and surface temperatures are cold enough that if snow showers appear above, they will fall as snow.

Went to bed at 2.ooam, nothing.
Woke up about half hour ago and complete whiteout.
We were supposed to have the odd shower then lots on Thurs/Friday.
Do hope that work is called off sometime this week.

Interesting that some people have seen inaccurate forecasts - I'm wondering which forecasts they were and was every forecast inaccurate? The Met Office and GFS moels have been spot on for us in W Kent - currently snowing very heavily again here. But the BBC hasn't been great, and DarkSky which used to be pretty good is doing a lot of chopping and changing (and nowcasting!).

Caroian · 27/02/2018 10:19

Oh yes, and re: urban vs hilly areas, we're in a town that traditionally sees little snow even when the surrounding areas have lying snow on the ground. But we've got lots... it's certainly not confined to hills were it has hit!

BirgitteNyborg · 27/02/2018 10:23

SE Dorset - woke up to beautiful clear blue skies. Bitterly cold but hardly any frost. I guess that means no moisture in the air? Clouds starting to build up a little bit now.

Snownechanger · 27/02/2018 10:24

Yes met office says no snow for us until 11am. It’s been hammering down for 40 odd minutes.

Getting on for 6 inches now

stubbornstains · 27/02/2018 10:26

OYBBK - I actually woke up in the middle of the night thinking "Yes, why Storm Emma? We've surely had Eleanor and Ffion already this winter!". But previous posters have already pointed out that it's a furrin named storm by now....Grin.

It's predicted to get up to about 50-60mph down here. Which is pretty much normal for SW Cornwall. I am so over wind!

Lovely cold, crisp and dry down here at the moment.

FloatyFlo · 27/02/2018 10:31

I want 6 inches of snow!! 😭😭

stamps foot like a stroppy child

totallyliterally · 27/02/2018 10:32

Over 6 inches here South East Coast. And still hammering down.

Cacofonix · 27/02/2018 10:37

We have tiny gentle snow flakes coming now. Grin

RedBlackberries · 27/02/2018 10:38

Good snowfall in Suffolk. It's really powdery though. We tried and failed at making snowmen. It just crumbles Confused

Titsywoo · 27/02/2018 10:42

We have graupel here in East Surrey.

Pennina · 27/02/2018 10:48

Me too Floaty!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/02/2018 10:48

Grin stubborn.

I do feel that it's a little bit unfair that I'm living in a snow desert. I feel I do deserve a little reward. Grin

Here you go OYBBK ❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️

De-lurking yo thank you, as I'm enjoying this thread so much!

DeadButDelicious · 27/02/2018 10:59

Snow overnight in Cheshire. I don't think iI'll last though. It's already melting.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/02/2018 11:04

Thanks Miles! I've a mind to hop on the train and bring back a couple of buckets. Grin

The 06z gfs model lies broadly in line with the 00z. Some changes in details.

There’s been a 20 car pile accident just up the road from me. Mostly school run/commuter traffic.

I do wish schools would take amber warnings more seriously and realise than lots of kids travel in by car. I’ve got 7 inches here and more snow forecast yet all the schools bar one are open

Rhodiolia · 27/02/2018 11:09

What snow we had has now melted (east coast Scotland)

GloriaSmud · 27/02/2018 11:10

I get the impression from looking at the models, reading message boards and looking at the metoffice website (which must be getting a hammering as it's reeeeaaaaalllllyyyy slooooow at times), that Thursday/Friday is still being a bit of a pain to forecast and although we'll get an idea of what's going to happen, in the end it'll just come down to nowcasting.

Misty9 · 27/02/2018 11:12

Whiteout in Norwich and still falling. Kids are in school/Nursery so I get to enjoy it!
