Potential very severe weather on Weds 17th/Thurs18th

It looks as though we could have some potentially extremely nasty weather Wednesday night into Thursday. Note the word 'potentially' - not guaranteed.

A low pressure looks to undergo rapid cyclogenesis (deepening) as it crosses the uk, potentially bringing 80+ mph winds across large areas.

As ever at this stage the models are varying quite wildly, both in terms of extent of deepening and where the low pressure crosses. Some are quite extreme, some are just very windy. Please keep an eye on the forecasts over the coming few days. I'll update when I can.

Kent here. Well the bird table is now firewood and can't imagine all the fences will have survived. Rural here and it's actually quite scary. Just waiting for the inevitable power cut

LEMtheoriginal · 18/01/2018 07:01

Kent here too. It sounds horrible out there and I think Dp is going to drive dd to the bus stop as it sounds pretty full on. It scares me

notsomanky · 18/01/2018 07:02

I honestly thought the roof was going to come of last night - we had a couple of hours of high winds.

I need to check the roof before work today, I will be surprised if we haven't lost any tiles.

StealthPolarBear · 18/01/2018 07:10

No wind here. Just sodding snow

metalmum15 · 18/01/2018 07:14

Midlands here, overnight was horrendous, kept waking up. Didn't help that despite numerous weather warnings some silly gits put their bins out, now they're all out in their dressing gowns picking up tons of rubbish.

olliegarchy99 · 18/01/2018 07:19

Rural Herefordshire here - have been awake since 2 am - on an exposed hill side and it was very windy.

Power cut at 3 am - but back on again at 4 am. So I did eventually get my first cuppa of the day Smile

skankingpiglet · 18/01/2018 07:20

Well that was an interesting night...! Rural Bedfordshire here and the village is surrounded by fields, so no natural windbrake. Forecast was reading 29mph winds but that looked and sounded very conservative when I peeked out of the blinds at 3am.

BitOutOfPractice · 18/01/2018 07:22

I was outside at 5am fighting to shut the gate that'd blown open and was banging

HHH3 · 18/01/2018 07:22

Herts here. Have barely slept as the wind whistled across the front of the house and down the chimney most of the night. DCs' rooms are at the back and they slept through it all.

DS1 has left to catch the train to school - there are loads of trains cancelled and delayed so it looks like he has a long journey. And I'm not looking forward to the rural drive to get DS2 to school.

Etymology23 · 18/01/2018 07:22

Gutter is half off here, garden furniture is everywhere but does appear to have survived. Now just sitting hearing my gutter pull the rest of itself to pieces. :/ Suffolk here and the Orwell bridge is closed so it’s chaos here.

megletthesecond · 18/01/2018 07:24

Hampshire here. Dreadful night. I can't believe something in the house or garden isn't damaged.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/01/2018 07:29

I'm just off to have a look to see what happened. It was pretty wild here too last night and I see there are lots of trees down on the rail network.

I was right last night when I went to bed. The storm did end up worse than the final models were forecasting. I'm waiting for the various weather boards to wake up so that I can read some post mortems. I suspect it developed earlier than expected and therefore was beginning to rapidly deepen as it crossed.

Areas as far apart as London City Airport and Capel Curig saw gusts in the 70-80mph range.

If anyone is yet to head for their train, do check! Lots and lots of cancellations everywhere.

Woke up at 2am ad back to sleep at 5 once i found some earplugs. What a night.

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 18/01/2018 08:32

This was the first place I came to, when I woke up this morning. Spot on OYBBK and Gloria !!! Winds recorded of 83 in Norfolk and 63 in London. (Off the radio).....and I slept through the lot !! Thankfully no damage...not sure how my fences escaped it.

JillJ72 · 18/01/2018 08:36

This website www.ventusky.com/?p=52.0;-0.7;5&l=gust showed 55mph at 0500h in N Bucks. More of the neighbours' render has peeled off and made a mess but thankfully between our houses and not towards the road / our cars. I can see fence panels dislodged, we have been gifted a rotten plank of wood from somewhere, and there were trees down on the school run.

On the plus side - a stunning sunrise for us!

MrSlant · 18/01/2018 08:49

I was honestly scared for my old wooden single glazed windows last night. They've never rattled so much and we were on the 'wrong' side for the predicted wind! Although we at least got it first so it was over and done with.

GloriaSmud · 18/01/2018 08:53

JillJ72 ~ we had a lovely sunrise too. According to that ventusky site, we got gusts between 55-65mph here between 4-5am.
Interesting to see what's happened to the temperature ~ it was 10.2C at 2.53am and now it's 3.7C

TeddyIsaHe · 18/01/2018 08:55

Easy Anglia - three trees down on my road, so we’re blocked in. Luckily I’m on maternity leave and went shopping yesterday! Quite like the prospect of a lazy day as long as our electricity holds out!

Frouby · 18/01/2018 08:59

Wild and windy here overnight in s yorks. Woke ds up and he sleeps like a log generally.

Dp gone over woodhead this morning to manchester. I wouldn't have fancied that journey but he left at 6am so presume he got there in 1 piece.

Forecast looking a bit snowy for tomorrow. And a lot rain coming over the weekend which could apparently fall as snow but we are due a warm front after to melt it all.

If the warm front doesn't arrive would that cause issues? Is the warm front guaranteed? Don't fancy another 2010!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/01/2018 09:01

The radio should have looked here whywont! London City Airport registered 73mph.

Only casualty here was the little Xmas tree. As far as I can see without going out anyway.

oldsilver · 18/01/2018 09:47

That site reckoned gusts at 68mph here in Briz. My weather station decided to run out of sending battery just before this all kicked off so no wind or rain recorded as I chased a patio chair arounx the garden Grin

Thingvellir · 18/01/2018 10:31

I've lost a few chunks of cement from my roof and several hours sleep Sad. Horrible night!
