Potential very severe weather on Weds 17th/Thurs18th

It looks as though we could have some potentially extremely nasty weather Wednesday night into Thursday. Note the word 'potentially' - not guaranteed.

A low pressure looks to undergo rapid cyclogenesis (deepening) as it crosses the uk, potentially bringing 80+ mph winds across large areas.

As ever at this stage the models are varying quite wildly, both in terms of extent of deepening and where the low pressure crosses. Some are quite extreme, some are just very windy. Please keep an eye on the forecasts over the coming few days. I'll update when I can.

Also here in the fens woken by the wind :)

user1494149444 · 18/01/2018 05:53

Amazing prediction by the OP.
It is very stormy here. I can't recall a storm this loud and long.
It will be interesting to see what it all looks like when the sun rises.

Theworldisfullofidiots · 18/01/2018 05:53

It must be whipping through the fens. In storm doris we lost a tree...

Tormundsbeard · 18/01/2018 05:53

Super windy in Bucks - Trying to work out what is rattling around outside... wonder what I will see at first light..

shushpenfold · 18/01/2018 05:54

North Cambs too....blowing a hoolie!!

WhoWants2Know · 18/01/2018 05:59

Also North Cambs and so noisy! If this carries on, the school run will be interesting.

Theworldisfullofidiots · 18/01/2018 05:59

Ah.....you've just brought back memories of Balamory....

Bluemugajug · 18/01/2018 06:00

Essex, sounds like the house is falling down. I can’t remember the last time we had a storm this bad! Other than this thread and a vague wind warning from met office I hadn’t heard anything about it!

I’ve looked on the outside CCTV and can see two trees down already!

DuruttiColumnist · 18/01/2018 06:02

@spankhurst We must live near each other (also NOxfordshire). We have a loose slate on our roof and I'm trying to glue it back via the power of positive thought...

Bluemugajug · 18/01/2018 06:12

Mate on twitter says her weather station is reading gusts up to 100mph Shock

MetOffice dropped a ball on this one

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 18/01/2018 06:14

Essex....OMG!!
Think I'll postpone my run till later.
Strange noises in house from things just shifting about.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 18/01/2018 06:14

On a bus in SW London now & it's calmed down.

Ifailed · 18/01/2018 06:16

I'm in Kent, can hear things crashing around in the garden (or could be next doors), but it's too dark to see. Will wait for some daylight to see what the damage is - hope my newish greenhouse has survived.

GloriaSmud · 18/01/2018 06:16

Leicester signing in where it's also been a very windy night. DH went out at 3.40am to pick up our bins but think they've gone over again. Think this was a fast moving system so things should be calming down now.

Hope everyone's managed to stay safe.

StealthPolarBear · 18/01/2018 06:18

Ugh it's horrendous

PseudoBadger · 18/01/2018 06:20

So windy (north London) - dreading walking to the station. And then I work 22 floors up in a building that sounds like it’s taking off on a normal day so just uuurgh

SloanePeterson · 18/01/2018 06:24

Cambs here too and bloody hell Shock Dh is about to leave for work though I'd rather he be here for a couple of hours til it calms down. Apparently there are trees down and a lorry overturned on his route so it'll be a little hairy Sad I've been aware this was coming for days, I check the BBC weather everyday, though none of my friends do and this will be a big shock to many. Thank god we've not assembled the new trampoline yet. I heard lots of loud bangs overnight but as far as we can see all our fences are still standing.

Bluemugajug · 18/01/2018 06:29

Met office app has my wind at 28 miles an hour. Are they having a laugh?!

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 18/01/2018 06:30

Kent - I hate this, we’re surrounded by trees and every storm like this gives me an abs workout with all the stomach clenching! Smile Always seems worse in the dark too.

Katescurios · 18/01/2018 06:34

Gusts not quite as constant or violent sounding now here in Leicester, either its settling down or my sleep addled brain has stopped being able to interpret sounds. Now to get madam ready for nursery, remember how to put my trousers on and head into work for a thrilling day of budgets and objective setting. Yay, woooo, get pumped.

GloriaSmud · 18/01/2018 06:42

Katescurios ~ It's calmed down a lot in the last 1/2 hour or so (also in Leicester) From what I can see outside, there are wheelie bins down all over the place so it's going to be fun dodging those this morning.

For those in the north and Scotland, the police have asked people to take extreme caution on roads because of heavy snow.

Bluemugajug · 18/01/2018 06:44

Essex here and still going strong, must be the tail end?!

Vitalogy · 18/01/2018 06:44

Calming down here now in my part of the Midlands.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 18/01/2018 06:47

Essex here too. Awake since 3am. The wind is so loud !

JillJ72 · 18/01/2018 06:55

Hope everyone is ok today. What a dreadful night. Waiting for daylight to see the damage. Recycling bins went over and I can see rubbish bags had a party. It's quieter now, thankfully.

OYBBK - spot on. Thank you!!
