Potential very severe weather on Weds 17th/Thurs18th

It looks as though we could have some potentially extremely nasty weather Wednesday night into Thursday. Note the word 'potentially' - not guaranteed.

A low pressure looks to undergo rapid cyclogenesis (deepening) as it crosses the uk, potentially bringing 80+ mph winds across large areas.

As ever at this stage the models are varying quite wildly, both in terms of extent of deepening and where the low pressure crosses. Some are quite extreme, some are just very windy. Please keep an eye on the forecasts over the coming few days. I'll update when I can.

Yes umbrellaonesie ~ some travel and weather information is here for the north and Scotland but the advice is to stay off roads unless the journey is necessary.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/01/2018 18:49

While we don't know how traffic will respond, it's certainly best to stay off the roads, I agree.

It's batten down the hatches time again.

MynewnameisKy · 17/01/2018 20:32

Have you any idea of how much snow NI will get tonight. We are already snowed in, haven't been able to get out today. Schools have been off for last two days. Really want to be able to get out tomorrow.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/01/2018 22:07

hmmm, storm is deepening faster than the latest gfs model indicated. I wonder if it is going to get pretty wild (already quite wild along the south coast)
Mynew, it could be pretty substantial.

keep safe oybbk and all others in the way.

JillJ72 · 18/01/2018 02:14

It's wild in N Bucks - windows are whistling a lot and can feel the force against them. Woke me up. Clouds are scudding past fast, but also lots of clear sky moments and bright stars.

JillJ72 · 18/01/2018 02:15

Meanwhile hubby in NE so will find out in morning if the snow arrived; hope his journey home will be ok!

mantlepiece · 18/01/2018 02:33

Lots of snow in the north east lying thickly now, I would say about 6" up to now and still coming down heavily. No wind though!

fiverabbits · 18/01/2018 02:37

I am in South East Wales, awake because worried about my roof. The ridge tiles and some tiles on the front corner on my semi-detached house came off at 11.30 so can't see what the rest of the roof looks like. Luckily no damage to the two cars parked in the driveway and my two plant troughs on wall and the dustbin stopped damage to the wall but it is still very windy and pouring with rain. I am just hoping no more damage.

Am awake, in south east, no snow but strong winds and I can’t sleep

OtterInDisgrace · 18/01/2018 03:06

There goes my fence! I can deal with all the weathers reasonably well but the wind does for me.

It never used to get so windy, did it? Couldn’t possibly be down to that damned fake climate change, could it?

I’m sure Trump and his ilk don’t actually suffer any effects of fake global warming. Their millions insulate them from having to encounter any of that pesky weather after all.

OtterInDisgrace · 18/01/2018 03:07

Man, that is fucking windy out there.

CiderwithBuda · 18/01/2018 03:29

Wind woke me up. We had a little real Xmas tree in a metal pot which I just popped on the outside steps when we took decorations down. Heard it blowing over a while ago. Poor little tree.

Next door have a trampoline and a football goal up in the garden....... hope they are still there tomorrow!

oldsilver · 18/01/2018 03:40

My patio set just slipped it's moorings. It's very loud out there. I was thinking the same about the wind being more nowadays - grew up without double glazing and spent many years living in top floor flats but seems so much worse the last few years.

Can't sleep, even my body is thrumming (not in a good way).

FrannySalinger · 18/01/2018 03:44

Incredibly windy here (Gloucestershire) - I'm flying to Edinburgh in a couple of hours, looks like I could be in for a fun time Grin

ScouseQueen · 18/01/2018 03:50

The wind's just woken me up here. Came on to look for a thread about it!

SadieHH · 18/01/2018 03:58

Fierce wind here (Surrey) made worse by the fact that the house across the road is having major renovations and is covered in plastic sheeting. DD1 who is super anxious about wind will freak if she wakes up. Even I’m freaked!

Snowdrop18 · 18/01/2018 03:59

It's so windy I'm surprised the flat's still here
Weren't warned it woukd be this bad so just pulled the chairs in off the balcony.

GoodMorningSunshine · 18/01/2018 04:00

We've been awake with it since about 3am in Hertfordshire 👎🏻
So far 10 houses out of 16 have their recycling bin contents all over the road 😩
This is definitely worse than usual.

JillJ72 · 18/01/2018 04:00

Just been woken up again. It's strong!!!

JillJ72 · 18/01/2018 04:00

Just been woken up again. It's strong!!!

user764329056 · 18/01/2018 04:03

It’s fierce out there, TV keeps cutting out, hope aerial stays put, as someone upthread said am sure we didn’t have these wild gales until relatively recently, childhood home was rickety and don’t remember having crazy winds around then, think entire global weather system has radically changed in past decade

FullSpoon · 18/01/2018 04:12

Wind insomnia here too (herts). Doesn't help that we sleep in the loft. SO stormy and noisy, bins scattered on our road.
