I wish you could have joint thread starters! Gloria and I will be hosting this years snow watch and tag teaming with amateur weather forecasts. When reading them, please bear in mind that we are both amateurs with busy day to day lives, but we will do our best.

Please remember snow is notoriously difficult to forecast in this country as it often falls under marginal conditions.
When a forecast matters please do check with the Met Office first.

After a taste of winter already for some in the east, this mornings GFS model sticks with the winter weather theme we’ve been noticing for a few days for late Thurs 7th onwards, with a significant low pressure looking to bring in some cold and potentially rather snowy weather. Indeed, there is the potential for this to be accompanied by some very strong winds.

At the moment GFS plays around with the exact location of this low pressure, so it is too early to say where any snow may hit, but most places away from the far west seem to be in the potential firing line at the moment.

If some of the charts come off, the weather could be quite disruptive next weekend.

I would like snow please
Even if I am 37 weeks pregnant

readyforsunshine · 05/12/2017 21:53

Poisonous smurf I think we must live fairly close. We hardly EVER get snow at home even if it’s snowing around us, we’re in a little pocket🙁

Wellandtrulyoutnumbered · 06/12/2017 04:37

No snow for Cornwall please. Logistically it's a nightmare especially as no one knows how to drive in it.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/12/2017 07:50

Tomorrow looks horrid, a lot of rain, very strong winds - storm force in Scotland, with accompanying blizzards.

Friday into saturday’s weather will mostly affect the north west and west, Birmingham seems to be a prime location I think but most places could see the occasional sleet or snow shower.

A lot of the cold air has gone from Sunday’s forecast into next week, showing a really messy picture of rain, sleet and snow. Horrid to be in, horrid to forecast with any sort of accuracy, but one really to be aware of as it’s the sort of situation that can bring sudden disruption.

Joining! I love snow, as long as you don’t have to go out. Hoping for a bit of it this weekend in Northern Ireland

Gertrudethestag · 06/12/2017 08:36

Our chance of snow has dwindled back to 14% on Saturday. Pah! I think my focus ought to switch from snow watching to flood / swell watching Xmas Blush

RhinoGirl · 06/12/2017 08:49

I love snow, however i’m hoping it only starts after 5pm on the 22nd and stops at 5pm on the 26th! 😂

SandLand · 06/12/2017 09:05

As I type this, it's 26C outside, so my snow interest is just about Xmas holidays.
When are snow forecasts for Xmas likely to be realistic??? I've got 2 small kids with a heavy interest in snow after the 23rd (please, don't stop the plane landing!) In the South Derbyshire area......

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 06/12/2017 09:11

Also joining !!!! I love it when I see this topic pop up in active !!! Means we're expecting something.....Grin

Xmas Grin

The Christmas weather guess thread will start in three days, when Christmas eve comes into the GFS range.

I can pretty much guarantee that we won’t be starting with any accuracy.

(apologies for not getting on yesterday, real life stuff getting in the way!)

Ah yes, most heavy snow-type weather that comes from the west, always seems to halt at Birmingham and doesn't make it towards Leicester. According to the metoffice though, looks like we could be in for some snow showers from Friday onwards.

Netweather's thoughts on Storm Caroline and the cold weather that follows.

magimedi · 06/12/2017 10:10

Thanks for that, Gloria.

Am delighted to see that the SE will (hopefully) escape the white stuff.

GloriaSmud · 06/12/2017 10:19

No sledge polishing for you then, magimedi!

Until the GFS comes into range when it comes to Christmas, Netweather's thoughts are here and TheWeatherOutlook's winter forecast is here.

magimedi · 06/12/2017 10:20

Too right, Gloria.

I used to like snow & then spent 3 winters in NE Scotland......

Maudlinmaud · 06/12/2017 10:21

Barra Best my all time favourite weather man has forecast snow for Friday with temperatures set to plummet.
Today we are in double figures but it's that awful damp air, I'd much rather cold, crisp and dry. Please let there be enough to build a snowman and get the sledge out. Snow in March is just not the same as snow in December.

gingergenius · 06/12/2017 10:28

Used to live in east Grinstead in West Sussex and used to get loads of snow. Moved to Sussex coast and nada. My kids hate me!!!

GloriaSmud · 06/12/2017 11:18

Amber warning for wind for Scotland now.

nannynick · 06/12/2017 15:44

Sunday 10th. Perhaps prospect of Snow for Berkshire, West Surrey. Perhaps just a dusting.

Joining this thread too!

megletthesecond · 06/12/2017 20:29

I actually need to know the chance of snow in the south next weekend,15-16th. We were going to stay away with family but heavy snow might scupper it.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/12/2017 20:47

Meglet, I don’t think we can even give real percentage chances for this Sunday at this point. I wouldn’t rule it out though for the following weekend,

Hmm I'm about 25 miles south of Brum. Currently have min of 60% for light snow all day on Friday on met office. From past experience if it gets us we'll get lots or it'll miss us completely.

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 06/12/2017 21:36

We are getting loads of wind warnings powere company warning of power cuts and trains and events being cancelled already for tomorrow. Lovely. Travelling to Aberdeen and back North this weekend so the snow can wait until we get back now.

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 06/12/2017 21:39

Oh and it was 12/13 degrees here today Hmm we had colder days in July.

megletthesecond · 06/12/2017 22:20

Thanks OYBBK Smile. It also affects whether I book star wars tickets or not, life or death stuff Wink.
