I wish you could have joint thread starters! Gloria and I will be hosting this years snow watch and tag teaming with amateur weather forecasts. When reading them, please bear in mind that we are both amateurs with busy day to day lives, but we will do our best.

Please remember snow is notoriously difficult to forecast in this country as it often falls under marginal conditions.
When a forecast matters please do check with the Met Office first.

After a taste of winter already for some in the east, this mornings GFS model sticks with the winter weather theme we’ve been noticing for a few days for late Thurs 7th onwards, with a significant low pressure looking to bring in some cold and potentially rather snowy weather. Indeed, there is the potential for this to be accompanied by some very strong winds.

At the moment GFS plays around with the exact location of this low pressure, so it is too early to say where any snow may hit, but most places away from the far west seem to be in the potential firing line at the moment.

If some of the charts come off, the weather could be quite disruptive next weekend.

Christmas pudding I'm not sure what 'a slider' is myself and when I 'Google' it, it comes up with things to do with burgers! I think from reading the netweather forums, that it's something to do with a low pressure system. At the moment, I'm trying to connect the talk of a 'slider low' on the netweather forum with what I see on the GFS weather chart and I'm wondering if it's a low pressure system with a centre to it, that looks like it's going to cross the UK and then everything sort of opens out and disappears or gets absorbed into another low pressure system. I think I need OYBBK's help on this one!

LooksBetter I'd say you're going to be in luck for snow. From what I can tell, it's still looking good for later this week for some areas. And (although it's a long way ahead), it doesn't look like it's going to warm up in the weeks afterwards either.

The netweather site is very interesting, they're all very excited about the potential for this weekend (though I don't understand half of what they're saying). Interesting they are taking about how the seas around us have cooled more than normal for this time of year with these cold snaps which ups the potential for more snow over the winter.

christmaspudding1 · 04/12/2017 21:09

lol.im looking at netweather discussion to and much excitment on there

i dont know why as i have no idea what the charts mean, thats why i asked what a slider wasGrin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/12/2017 21:11

I'm on my misbehaving phone at the moment so can't look at the charts. Is there a small low forecast?

First goose arrived in the village. Could be a sign? Grin

PoisonousSmurf · 04/12/2017 21:16

Netweather is for the exited ones. The Weather Outlook (TWO) is for the sensible ones lol!
But it seems that in my area (just north of M4) in the SW, that we'll be lucky to even see one snowflake.

PoisonousSmurf · 04/12/2017 21:18

What we really need is for the cold to last at least a week and then for a fabled 'Channel Low' to make an appearance and make it seem like December 1981 Grin

Gertrudethestag · 05/12/2017 11:25

Oooh netweather says 64% chance of snow where we are (South West) for Saturday!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/12/2017 13:55

I’ve found a source for detailed weather info from the ECMWF. here This is ace, I’m no longer confined to looking at just the gfs for detailed guesses.

Take snow charts with the giant pinch of salt they need Grin Lots of potential for snow from the end of this week. Note potential, not guarantee. If you are in the south, or along the east coast, don’t despair, small scale synoptics can deliver decent amounts but we will only get 24/36 hours notice for those.

I’m slightly excited.

Wonderful to find you all here, place-marking in anticipation of snowfall! We haven’t had anymore than an inch here in Surrey since 2013 either.

Will charge up the big camera!!

Delatron · 05/12/2017 14:50

Thanks OYBBK. I guess there's so much uncertainty in terms of snow at the moment but the fact that there's potential is exciting. It's good to have some proper, cold winter weather and it all seems more promising than previous years.

It’s gone from ice skating to school on Friday to 10-11 degrees over the weekend until now up here. Would welcome some cold wintery weather. Hope we get some snow but just now we have wind warnings in place for the end of the week.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/12/2017 17:15

Including snow and ice warnings for Saturday.

Good call GFS from sometime back now.

Now I do love a bit of snow, but we're heading from the South West to Center Parcs at Sherwood on Monday. So OYBBK or Gloria , will we get there ok, and more importantly, will we get snowed in there next week?!Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/12/2017 17:22

I’ll come back at 8pm to update if Gloria doesn’t get in before me.

I'm far too excited by the warnings. There's a chance my mothers annual xmas visit will need to be postponed (she's Shropshire/Wales border) which suits me as I'm completely unorganised this year. The children will be sad if it misses us (South Warks) but much as I like it to look at I don't fancy pushing a double bigbuggy gy in it again!

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 05/12/2017 17:36

Double buggy ffs Hmm
