I wish you could have joint thread starters! Gloria and I will be hosting this years snow watch and tag teaming with amateur weather forecasts. When reading them, please bear in mind that we are both amateurs with busy day to day lives, but we will do our best.

Please remember snow is notoriously difficult to forecast in this country as it often falls under marginal conditions.
When a forecast matters please do check with the Met Office first.

After a taste of winter already for some in the east, this mornings GFS model sticks with the winter weather theme we’ve been noticing for a few days for late Thurs 7th onwards, with a significant low pressure looking to bring in some cold and potentially rather snowy weather. Indeed, there is the potential for this to be accompanied by some very strong winds.

At the moment GFS plays around with the exact location of this low pressure, so it is too early to say where any snow may hit, but most places away from the far west seem to be in the potential firing line at the moment.

If some of the charts come off, the weather could be quite disruptive next weekend.

Bishop, yes, I’d agree with that I think and that’s reflected in the warnings changing a bit.

I’ll just have a quick squizz at the latest model.

all I can say is that it looks complicated! snow north, rain south, where the boundary will be is a massive guess.

Agh we are expecting snow tonight, but we have had heavy rain all morning and more forecast for this evening, so it may just be a slush fest. I can do snow but who likes slush? Nobody does.

OrangeCactus · 07/12/2017 14:39

Is it going to be really icy tomorrow regardless of if we get snow or not? I'm in West Yorkshire.

Last week I walked dd to nursery and it was so slippy, it was horrible. Ice really triggers my anxiety and I am stressing about it already. I live in a place with cobbled streets and big old paving slabs for pavement which get slippy even when it's wet Sad

donajimena · 07/12/2017 14:41

I'm confuddled. Weather channel says no snow in Cardiff. BBC says maybe. What do you think kitten? I don't mind either way.

Nyx1 · 07/12/2017 14:53

hope okay to ask this here

befuddled by varying forecasts for London for Friday & Saturday - is it really going to feel like -2 during the day?

PointlessUsername · 07/12/2017 15:32

I have seen snow for London on two forecasts but not on met office Confused

Is it just a case of nobody knows until it falls?

MrsOH2004 · 07/12/2017 15:42

Weather warning here for Sunday for snow, North Northants, and typically I have to be at work for 4pm Xmas Hmm

Nyx1 · 07/12/2017 16:03

I don't usually venture into Central London on a weekend but I'm supposed to be there for something on Saturday and now I'm not sure what to do because coming home to an outer zone becomes really hard if there's an inch of snow and it ices over. Hmm.

MsAwesomeDragon · 07/12/2017 16:09

Year 7 think we had snow this afternoon. We didn't, it was hail, but it caused great excitement as it lay on the ground (2-3 mm at most)!! As they left my classroom to go home they were throwing hail-balls at each other and having great fun.

BlackeyedSusan · 07/12/2017 17:43

wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

which has probably jinxed it.

arse.

WhispersOfWickedness · 07/12/2017 18:09

Waves to thenightsky (I'm North Lincolnshire too) 😊
I also use yr.no, Norwegian friends introduced me to it, it is normally quite pessimistic about snow (it didn't predict the snow we had last week) but definitely has it for this Sunday, so I'm feeling even more optimistic 😊

Ilikesweetpeas · 07/12/2017 18:13

Pleas tell me I'm going to get from Wigan to London by train this weekend!! Tracing down Friday nought and back on Sunday and getting worried now!!!

NoStraightEdges · 07/12/2017 18:27

God I love this thread. I've been and done a massive food shop, bought de-over salt and got the sledges out. Another one jinxing it Smile

In Birmingham and keeping my fingers crossed

Frouby · 07/12/2017 18:46

Wet and wild here in south yorkshire.

Really hoping the snow is delayed on sunday. Forecast showing it starting at 9am then heavy by 12am. Poor ds has his 4th birthday party at 10am and is ridiculously excited.

We also need to get to Manchester airport Wednesday so for once I am hoping the snow is short lived. We are off to sunny tenerife for dps big birthday. We could really do with a week away from stress after a horrid month.

GloriaSmud · 07/12/2017 18:47

Try and answer some questions (and hope I get it right!)

Orange Cactus possibly a frost tonight but not a certainty. There are going to be frosts though over the next few nights with the temperature not getting much above freezing during the day.

donajimena ~ for Cardiff, there might be sleety/snow showers but nothing too heavy.

Pointless Username temperatures are a bit marginal as things get further south so London way might get sleety showers but more likely to be rain. Think the metoffice will probably firm up on details over the next day or two but in the end, it might well come down to just looking out the window (or nowcasting!)

Nyx1 probably going to be frosty/icy but not snowy Saturday night.

Ilikesweetpeas You'll probably get to London OK but it could get dicey getting back on Sunday, especially later in the day. I would keep an eye on forecasts and train information. If it looks really bad for the Wigan area, possibly consider leaving London earlier.

Nyx1 · 07/12/2017 18:50

Thanks Gloria.

gttia · 07/12/2017 18:52

I've fully prepared my work load and team, nhs, and it looks like the south east May actually miss it all?

Bookaboo · 07/12/2017 19:32

OrangeCactus
You need some of those ice grippers!
Failing that some tick willy socks on the the outside of your shoes really stops you from slipping. You may look daft but who cares!!

Bookaboo · 07/12/2017 19:33

Oops!! 😂 Thick woolly that should be!!

TheWoollybacksWife · 07/12/2017 19:36

@Bookaboo 😂😂😂

I was just about to google willy socks.

Bookaboo · 07/12/2017 19:38

😂😂possibly the funniest typo I've ever made if I do say so myself

Bookaboo · 07/12/2017 19:39

Would mrwoolyback like some willy socks?? 😂😂

C4Envelope · 07/12/2017 19:41
