I wish you could have joint thread starters! Gloria and I will be hosting this years snow watch and tag teaming with amateur weather forecasts. When reading them, please bear in mind that we are both amateurs with busy day to day lives, but we will do our best.

Please remember snow is notoriously difficult to forecast in this country as it often falls under marginal conditions.
When a forecast matters please do check with the Met Office first.

After a taste of winter already for some in the east, this mornings GFS model sticks with the winter weather theme we’ve been noticing for a few days for late Thurs 7th onwards, with a significant low pressure looking to bring in some cold and potentially rather snowy weather. Indeed, there is the potential for this to be accompanied by some very strong winds.

At the moment GFS plays around with the exact location of this low pressure, so it is too early to say where any snow may hit, but most places away from the far west seem to be in the potential firing line at the moment.

If some of the charts come off, the weather could be quite disruptive next weekend.

I wonder how AccuWeather work out their forecasts, its telling me that it will rain in 3 minutes and using my brothers town it says it will snow in 18 minutes.

GloriaSmud · 17/01/2018 06:41

We have a very slight covering of snow! (Leicester)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/01/2018 07:30

dry as a bone where I am, expect for all the muddy squelchy bits Grin I'm still unsure as to what prompted the metoffice to share the warning across the south.

A lot of snow news 'up north' though.

I can see a tiny scraping of it on flat roofs and sheds here, none on the ground though.

fortyfourfeasts · 17/01/2018 07:55

A dusting in Nottingham.

notsomanky · 17/01/2018 08:14

Woke to a very light dusting of hail this morning.

We had a mix of rain, hail then snow and thunder snow through the night, and were woken by hailstorm at 5am.

Cold blustery and grey here now.

lubeybooby · 17/01/2018 08:27

In the end it snowed four or five times yesterday but nothing settled, apart from the lightest of light dustings overnight which is very patchy now. (Shropshire hills) Oh well! Hoping there will be a few more opportunities yet this winter

GloriaSmud · 17/01/2018 09:01

Awful conditions in the north/Scotland.

On a more lighthearted note (and mentioned on that BBC page), Traffic Scotland have a gritter tracker page and all the gritters are named! (I like 'Gritty Gritty Bang Bang' and 'Gritallica.')

Perihelion · 17/01/2018 10:53

Sir Andy Flurry is my favourite.

Been out with the dog in the snow. Blue skies and a cold westerly winds. Starting to thaw now.

Snow day here. Not as much as the borders though which is due to get it again tonight.

GloriaSmud · 19/01/2018 12:54

In addition to other weather warnings today and tomorrow (including an amber one today for more snow, for the Scottish borders), the metoffice have added one for snow on Sunday, as a band of rain hits the cold air. Any snow probably won't hang about for long though as temperatures are forecast to rise through Sunday afternoon and overnight into Monday.

Fruitboxjury · 19/01/2018 14:13

This is proving to be the most uneventful winter ever in the south, is there any hope of things changing here and making all my winter clothes purchases worthwhile before spring is upon us?

fatsatsuma · 19/01/2018 14:19

Gloria and Kitten, what time do the Met Office update their warnings? Here in North Oxon we are now forecast heavy snow between 9 and 12 tomorrow morning. Someone on TWO flagged this up yesterday but I hadn't heard anything else about it so assumed it was a red herring. I will take it seriously when the Met Office issue a warning, which they haven't yet. Any thoughts?

fatsatsuma · 19/01/2018 14:49

Ha! It's gone back to 5 hours of sleet. I get the feeling this is what might be described as a marginal situation??

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/01/2018 15:30

It's around 11am ish give or take half an hour usually, unless something unexpected crops up short term.

Snowing in Glasgow☃️☃️☃️

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 19/01/2018 16:15

Beautiful sunny day here today, but oh so cold. No snow at all. It can snow Sunday though...once I'm back from work! !

fatsatsuma · 20/01/2018 09:24

Now back to heavy snow for 3 hours starting at 11 (according to the Met Office). Is this likely to actually settle and cause problems? Normally I'm laid back about snow but I have a lot of driving on country lanes to do today and just wondering if I should make other plans...

GloriaSmud · 20/01/2018 12:30

fatsatsuma ~ I don't think the metoffice are totally sure and as you mentioned yesterday, it's one of those marginal situations! (We were supposed to have sleet/rain for most of today but we're now down for heavy snow from 1-3pm.) As far as your journeys go, you might have to do a spot of 'nowcasting' (seeing what it's doing out of the window at the time), take one journey at a time and if you think it's getting dangerous, abandon things for the day.

There's also a revised weather warning for tomorrow.

GloriaSmud · 20/01/2018 18:23

Possibility of 'a little wintry something' tomorrow for parts of the country.

Getting a bit excited about that Gloria ❄️

GloriaSmud · 20/01/2018 19:06

Might not last very long and only be for a few hours Woollybacks, but it'll be nice to have a bit more winter before it gets milder (double figures forecast for Tuesday/Wednesday!)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/01/2018 19:54

It does look like there could be a fair few in for a temporary surprise tomorrow morning!
