Snow watch 2017/18

I wish you could have joint thread starters! Gloria and I will be hosting this years snow watch and tag teaming with amateur weather forecasts. When reading them, please bear in mind that we are both amateurs with busy day to day lives, but we will do our best.

Please remember snow is notoriously difficult to forecast in this country as it often falls under marginal conditions.
When a forecast matters please do check with the Met Office first.

After a taste of winter already for some in the east, this mornings GFS model sticks with the winter weather theme we’ve been noticing for a few days for late Thurs 7th onwards, with a significant low pressure looking to bring in some cold and potentially rather snowy weather. Indeed, there is the potential for this to be accompanied by some very strong winds.

At the moment GFS plays around with the exact location of this low pressure, so it is too early to say where any snow may hit, but most places away from the far west seem to be in the potential firing line at the moment.

If some of the charts come off, the weather could be quite disruptive next weekend.

Rather boring week when it comes to the weather ~ at least it's cold and settled-ish.
Bit far ahead but this rather stormy thing keeps showing up on the GFS from Monday, 15/1...

Checking in to see what you think about the end of next week Gloria and Kitten! Is it still too far ahead to believe that there could be snow? (Met office forecast)

Fruitboxjury · 09/01/2018 19:48

It does indeed look exceedingly dull over the next week ahead. What will it take for the south east to see snow this year? We appear to be fairly well away from all the cold areas

GloriaSmud · 09/01/2018 20:59

SinceWhenDid ~ yes, that weather system has been showing up on the GFS model for the last few days and from next Monday (at the moment anyway), it does look like next week could be on the cold side, with snow for hilly areas, especially in the west but I think showers could occur anywhere later on in the week.

Ilikesweetpeas ~ it's still a long way ahead but Wednesday/Thursday/Friday next week has been showing as another time when there could be more snow. Again at the moment, I think it's more hilly western areas where it's more likely.

Things should become clearer as we head towards/over the weekend.

GloriaSmud · 09/01/2018 21:05

While we wait to see if we get any more snow ~ has anyone seen the huge amounts they've had in Zermatt? There are some webcams here and if you keep clicking on the 'previous images' here, you can see how much snow they've had over the last few days Xmas Shock

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/01/2018 21:17

I'm not ready to commit to next week yet Grin

OYBBK ~ just in case one puts one's foot in it, eh?!

Metoffice's thoughts for next week. They're going for the possibility of snow for some.

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 11/01/2018 16:45

Oh thank God...I lost you all there for a bit !! Was coming on, to ask the predictions for next week, as just read, we'recommend in for a significant amount of snow (UK)....wanted to hear it from you guts first thing, before I stock up !!!

GloriaSmud · 11/01/2018 19:43

Whywontthey ~ From early Monday, the cold starts coming into Scotland so they should do well for snow from that day. For the rest of the country, I think it'll depend whereabouts you are and if it's cold enough. The north-west and western areas (especially high up areas) could see quite a bit but from Tuesday onwards, (again, depending on if it's cold enough), just about anywhere could see snow showers.

I think at the moment, it might be a case of waiting until the weekend for a bit more certainty as snow is quite difficult to forecast and even then, it might be a case of looking out the window and seeing if anything/what precipitation-type is falling from the sky!

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 11/01/2018 20:37

Thanks Gloria....I think I might stock up...just in case !!! I also need to proof read before I post !! Guts indeed Grin

GloriaSmud · 11/01/2018 21:08

I hadn't noticed the guts! Grin

GloriaSmud · 12/01/2018 11:08

As I kind of expected ~ weather warning for ice/snow, for Scotland/Northern Ireland, Monday and Tuesday.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/01/2018 13:09

oh well done Gloria, I kind of have my mind on other things atm.

Whywon't I yhad read it as you were going to trust the guts (gut instincts) of OYBBK and Gloria, and that the wrong letter was a missing "r" at the end of "you"!! Grin

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 12/01/2018 14:36

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 12/01/2018 14:36

OYBBK & Gloria what is the weather going to be like for Contin near Inverness weekend 19 - 22. I am camping so need to make a decision on snow, wet cold or a combination of all 3. TIA

OYBBK hope you are ok. Your post before suggests you need a hug.

GloriaSmud · 14/01/2018 11:36

Unescorted ~ Weather looks OK for those days, nothing huge in the way of high winds/rain (although the area is due to have snow this week, so don't know whether you need to factor that in for getting there etc) It's going to be cold though, hardly above freezing during the day and very much in the minus figures at night so take huge amount of thermals....and blankets!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/01/2018 13:18

Unescorted, I'm ok thanks :) just literally a very full brain. It's lovely of you to ask.

I think my worry for next weekend is the potential for laying snow for you. If next weeks storm does come off, there could be a lot of snow on the ground. You could maybe make snow caves? Grin

It's going to be really difficult to predict next weekend until I think Tuesday/Wednesday.

Eek, DS1 is going on his P6 outdoor activity trip with the school to Benmore near Dunoon tomorrow for the week! Packed lots of very warm stuff!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/01/2018 11:26

snow and ice look to affect as far south as around Liverpool tomorrow down the western side, as well as much of Wales. By evening high areas around Dartmoor could also see lying snow.

Thanks Kitten, do you think I'll get Birthday snow in North Manchester tomorrow?
