US (and other places) Hurricane season

It's very belated I know, I've been discussing the various hurricanes in another thread in the time I have recently, but anyway, better late than never. From t'other thread:

//www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at1+shtml/054806.shtml?cone#contents Irma at the moment looks like it's going to slide into the Gulf of Mexico, grazing the west side of Florida. However, the GFS model has it turning earlier, so there is some uncertainty still. (as there often is)

Jose is expected to become a Hurricane over night tonight, but I don't think it will be as major as Irma due to outflow from Irma effectively choking it. However, depending on the path it takes it could still compound misery.

I'm more worried about the various Islands that Irma is traveling over rather than the potential for a US landfall, simply because they have the means to evacuate and more resources. They are going to be completely devastated. Though Branson is riding Irma out on Necker Island.

I hope so too. I've seen comments from people saying that only two people died when it hit Barbuda. Given that no one heard from the Island for 12 hours, did they think that was going to be accurate? I hope it's true, but they then use figures like that as an excuse not to evacuate.

and I apologise, my ipad keeps changing the word shear. It's very annoying!

bbc news has a video from Barbuda. The firefighter at the end spoke about huge huge courage.

Good news about Jose though. NOAA have Jose rapidly weakening in a couple of days or so due to outflow from Irma :) it also looks at the moment to steer away from the US.

I guess it may produce some stormy weather further up the us coast, or it may harmlessly boomerang back out to sea. I'll keep an eye on it, but it's not one to worry about too much apart perhaps for tropical storm conditions for the Leeward Islands later today it the track shifts a bit.

Jose looks as likely to hit the UK as the US.

I hoped there would be a thread on here. Thank you OYBBK.

It's so horrifying seeing the pictures on the news. Cannot imagine how terrifying it must be to be on one of the islands in it's path toward Florida.

Thank's for the link to the live wind map, I hadn't thought to do that. It has such savage beauty when displayed like that (plus I can now mess about looking at all the other readings for that area).

You can't know that Calman. It may end up affecting our weather as an extra tropical depression but we just don't know yet.

We have family in Cuba at the moment. Most of the news seems to be about America.

Just watching the Dominican Republic (thank you for link Gloria) and one webcam is still up but even in the short time I've had it on the water is getting higher and battering beachside buildings, enough to wash away sandbags and a bit of decking then a man comes into view in shorts and strolls across the beach. I was scared to watch in case I was about to see someone drown. Fortunately he missed all the waves. I have no idea what he was doing as it's (obviously) insanely windy.

I just meant that it's anyone's guess, could hit anywhere from Georgia to Cornwall, but, fingers crossed, a bit more likely to curl round back to Ireland/UK by which time it should be a brisk breeze.

That's too funny yet awful MrSlant. I've been out this morning so I'm going to have a quick look at what's happened before I get on with work.

The waves got much bigger and the idiots appeared to stop after a while. Having snooped on google earth I think the road behind is probably flooded by now. Anyway, the webcam is down now. RIP brave little webcam you did good work there.

Incidentally, re the Bransons & co, they were in the wine cellar (house is up a hill iirc from reading about the fire they had)

So much safer than the people on Barbuda, for instance Sad

Hope it's right that Jose won't follow Irma

Best wishes to all who are in the path of this hurricane. Get out if you can. If you can't, then hold on tight!

latest noaa discussion still looking pretty catastrophic over the next couple of days but looks to wind down a little by the time it hits southern Florida in around 3 days time. That's no comfort for those due to be hit tonight.

British ships with support on their way. I saw earlier they were carrying Marines and Royal Engineers, and water supply equipment.

I know the French acted earlier and have support on the way.

But what can you do with this level of destruction and flooding?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/09/2017 17:19

I don't know Perking. What can you do when your whole Island is deemed uninhabitable?

Following the news through my fingers, we know people in Cuba. Getting rather irritated at the americocentricity (is that a word?) of the news though. Storms hitting America - who are generally not living in shacks and much more able to move inland - is really on a whole different level to a storm hitting the poorest regions of small islands. Angry

I just hope everyone in smaller islands are ok.i know they get hit the hardest. And people will help them build their homes fast
