US (and other places) Hurricane season

It's very belated I know, I've been discussing the various hurricanes in another thread in the time I have recently, but anyway, better late than never. From t'other thread:

www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at1+shtml/054806.shtml?cone#contents Irma at the moment looks like it's going to slide into the Gulf of Mexico, grazing the west side of Florida. However, the GFS model has it turning earlier, so there is some uncertainty still. (as there often is)

Jose is expected to become a Hurricane over night tonight, but I don't think it will be as major as Irma due to outflow from Irma effectively choking it. However, depending on the path it takes it could still compound misery.

I'm more worried about the various Islands that Irma is traveling over rather than the potential for a US landfall, simply because they have the means to evacuate and more resources. They are going to be completely devastated. Though Branson is riding Irma out on Necker Island.

My dh has come up with an interesting observation. The last earthquake in Mexico came after hurricane irma and now another quake after Maria. He thinks the low air pressure caused by hurricane maybe enough to cause movement in the plates. Do you think this is possible or is it just coincidence?

RedToothBrush · 20/09/2017 04:51

Nope no coincidence. Some research has been done in this field. There seems to be a link. Still early days on this but enough for scientists to think there is a link.

www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/12/111208121016.htm
Research example from 2011/2012.

Hurricane Irma was producing a resonance of the sea bed which was measureable by semisographs. This was reported in a number of places.

www.9news.com/mobile/article/weather/irma-registers-on-equipment-used-to-measure-earthquakes/73-471802338

Happy thought for you.

Global warming could well equal not just more hurricanes but also more earthquakes and perhaps even more worrying that both, more tsunamis.

Real end of days type stuff.

RedToothBrush · 20/09/2017 05:04

Couple more articles to get you thinking

www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/hurricanes-may-cause-earthquakes-38447485/

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/world/2016/oct/16/climate-change-triggers-earthquakes-tsunamis-volcanoes

Oh yeah. Forgot volcanos too.

Still a developing field and there does seem to be some disagreement, but certainly the growing consensus seems to be headed one direction as the evidence seems to be mounting.

perhapstomorrow · 20/09/2017 05:39

Thanks for all those links red. Very interesting but sobbering reading.

I was aware that climate change would impact our weather patterns but it didn't occur to me that these storms could trigger earthquakes and increased volcanic activity. Seems obvious now.

RedToothBrush · 20/09/2017 07:43

The 'good' news is that volcanic eruptions have the effect of cooling the earth's atmosphere. A single big eruption might really help reduce global warming.

Poor poor Puerto Rico - Maria is cat 5 165mph.
after that she's still set to swing north.

Lee has a greater than 60%chance of regenerating. Not sure what it will be called? Lee, Zombie Lee or the next one in the alphabet. That one also looks to swing north.

That's a lot of energy heading up in to the north atlantic. Will have a look at our models....

early october looks pretty wild still, more of that in the autumn gales thread.

Surely it's gotta be Leesus?

MrSlant · 20/09/2017 09:56

Sorry, it's all very sobering reading and I worry for our planet and the future but Leesus? GrinGrinGrin

BlackeyedSusan · 20/09/2017 10:16

Grin leesus...

Maria hitting Puerto Rico now. Cat 4, but only just shy of cat 5. 155mph winds recorded.

The stadium which is being used as a shelter has a leaking roof, so people are now in the hallways, trying to shelter.

Pictures already showing the damage is bad.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/09/2017 13:12

I'm watching it on my lunch break. Very nasty.

Looks like Puerto Rico is being hit hard. BBC reporting the entire island has lost power Shock

Loving Leesus - although perhaps it should be Leezarus

OublietteBravo · 20/09/2017 19:15

Geography fail: DH expressed surprise that Puerto Rico had been hit by Maria. Turns out he was confusing it with Costa Rica.

Flash flood warning in place for whole island. That's not just the coasts from sea surge.

RedToothBrush · 21/09/2017 08:24

Not Maria but thought relevant to conversation yesterday and because I haven't seen it reported in many places

Deadly Mexico City Earthquake Triggered Volcanic Eruption, Leaves At Least 217 Dead

As if the earthquake wasn't enough to handle, the shaking appears to have triggered an eruption of Popocatépetl volcano, located southeast of Mexico City. The volcanic eruption caused a church to collapse during mass at the foot of the mountain, killing 15 worshippers.

Puerto Rico apparently was the storage for much of the relief donations.

#RioDeLaPlata River located near #Comerio #PuertoRico has flooded an epic 79ft, 68ft over flood stage! It’s highest ever recorded. #Maria

The predicted track of Maria looks like it might be heading towards the Eastern Seaboard states in a few days time. Although the predictions show it weakening before it gets there.

CalmanOnSpeeddial · 22/09/2017 17:47

Looks OK to me. Breezy but basically fine. Where are you seeing a prediction of a mainland hit?

I think it looks ok too, bit wild and wet for them, but basically following the same path as Jose without the loopiness.
