US (and other places) Hurricane season

It's very belated I know, I've been discussing the various hurricanes in another thread in the time I have recently, but anyway, better late than never. From t'other thread:

www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at1+shtml/054806.shtml?cone#contents Irma at the moment looks like it's going to slide into the Gulf of Mexico, grazing the west side of Florida. However, the GFS model has it turning earlier, so there is some uncertainty still. (as there often is)

Jose is expected to become a Hurricane over night tonight, but I don't think it will be as major as Irma due to outflow from Irma effectively choking it. However, depending on the path it takes it could still compound misery.

I'm more worried about the various Islands that Irma is traveling over rather than the potential for a US landfall, simply because they have the means to evacuate and more resources. They are going to be completely devastated. Though Branson is riding Irma out on Necker Island.

Florida definitely got the most coverage of anywhere but to be fair their communications (webcams etc) are always going to be light years ahead of any of the Caribbean island's equivalents.

LapdanceShoeshine · 11/09/2017 21:30

short clip of Tomasz nearly being blown down the street

I don't understand quite why it's essential for weather presenters/news reporters to do this Confused

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/09/2017 21:33

most cnn reporters seemed to place themselves sensibly under concrete which would be a bit more sensible!

2/3 of Florida without power

LapdanceShoeshine · 11/09/2017 21:59

I know 2 people in Florida.
One, in Tampa area, stayed on grid & had minimal damage; the other, near Orlando, had branches crashing through outbuilding roofs & hasn't been heard from for many hours Sad

LapdanceShoeshine · 11/09/2017 22:17

Guardian piece on exposed reporters - some amusing images Grin

cozietoesie · 11/09/2017 22:51

I recall one (allegedly) experienced CNN reporter standing on a crosswalk in - I think - downtown Tampa. (You'll recall the scene. They were in the eye and he was accompanying a man who'd brought his 3-legged dog out to relieve itself.) The meteorologist in the studio virtually shouted at him to get himself the heck to higher ground right away. The reporter seemed unfazed.........

RedToothBrush · 11/09/2017 22:59

Starting to see reports of missing people. CNN reporting father and son missing after trying to ride the storm out in a boat in the keys.

They don't seem to have been the only ones either.

A boat.

Having seen pictures of boats shipwrecked everywhere don't see how they could have survived.

BeyondLimitsAndWhatever · 11/09/2017 23:35

A boat?! Jesus...

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/09/2017 07:16

I saw that Cozie.

The tropical disturbance fortunately seems unlikely to organise itself into a tropical storm.

I think that they are starting to have a few more concerns about Jose hitting the Eastern seaboard - after it does a loop the main model concensus seems to be that curves off NW.

I came across a really interesting discussion about hurricanes and Europe.

That's interesting :)

(Weird coincidence that of those five storms to nearly hit the UK, four of them share names with my close family Grin )

frenchfancy · 13/09/2017 07:15

I guess it is just symantics about the naming of storms but that list didn't mention the 2010 Cyclone Xynthia which killed 51people in France. Nor Cyclone Klaus in 2009 which killed 26 across France and Spain.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/09/2017 07:18

It's not really semantics at all, as in all areas of science there are very precise definitions in meteorology. The list didn't mention those deadly storms because by every definition they weren't hurricanes. There are lots of ways weather can be extremely dangerous without being a hurricane,

Just Jose hanging round in the Atlantic now, going nowhere in particular for the next couple of days. Once it's completed it's loop we will get a better feel for where it's off to, but looking at the longer term models the remains don't seem to get tangled up in our weather systems. Will see what happens.

My friend in cuba was completely flooded. I sent her loads of warnings. Their warnings were a little delayed. They thought the storm would skim them and mostly die off. My friend is brave. The saddest thing i heard was that people didd due to the ramshacle buildings. For the love of god take the embargo off. Let them modernise. That is the best protection against communism etc

Jeanneweany · 14/09/2017 22:26

Thomas cook. Crap.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/09/2017 07:30

Your poor friend Jeanne. What a nightmare for her. Are they getting help?

Looks like Jose is expected to strengthen again and we might be following tropical storm Lee before too long.

CalmanOnSpeeddial · 15/09/2017 17:58

Jose currently looks like it's going to follow a more common route out to the middle of nowhere though thank heavens.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/09/2017 19:28

Cripes, turn away for a couple of days and you are right, two new tropical disturbances appear. Jose may hit the east coast, but it looks unlikely.

Norma!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/09/2017 22:24

that was quick!!!

OP posts:
OublietteBravo · 16/09/2017 23:08

Wow - we now have 4 tropical storms: Norma + Otis in the Pacific and Lee + Maria in the Atlantic. Plus hurricane Jose is still around.
