I'm starting this discussion because I was in danger of hijacking the Icelandic volcano thread. I started using the Mila Icelandic webcams to watch the eruption at Holoraun (the Bardabunga webcams), but lately I've seen the aurora borealis quite a few times on the other webcams, particularly the Thingvellir webcam www.livefromiceland.is/webcams/thingvellir/, although the lights can be seen sometimes on the Hekla and Jokulsarlon ones.

Another OP posted a link to the Hotel Ranga aurora cam, which is here: www.hotelranga.is/northern-lights/northern-light-webcam/

I am posting a couple of pics below for comparison to get you started. The first is a lovely aurora shot at Thingvellir from September, then a more blurry one from last night and a normal dark evening shot.

If you can find any other lovely aurora cams please post links (and pics) below. Happy hunting!

I don't think so at the moment badRoly ~ AuroraWatch says the storm seems to have calmed down for the moment Sad

badRoly · 22/06/2015 22:53

Oh Sad I got all excited for a moment there Blush

It would be nice to see something, wouldn't it? The Alert's gone back to Red so there might still be a chance but it's probably better for the Southern Hemisphere now. There are 1 or 2 webcams here and Spaceweather's gallery of recent Aurora photos are
here ~ looks like someone from Anglesey got to see it!

PseudoBadger · 23/06/2015 13:41

Great find on the Antarctic cam!

Aurora was seen in southern England last night.

My people! Good catches on the antarctic cameras last night Badger!

Story here from BBC Wales online with photos from the Brecon Beacons last night.

I've just had another amber Aurora Alert from Lancaster University, so perhaps it would be worth us "tuning in" later.

I've just found this landing page with several webcams linked from it. All of them look a bit grainy/nothing doing right now. I don't think they are of the same quality as the Abisko sky station though.

You can see the lights at about 12 seconds on the 2 day time-lapse footage from Australia's Macquarie Station here. It will probably be overwritten in the next 24 hours, so you may have missed it by the time you see this link. It is sped up so much, it's a blink & you miss it thing.

Another image from the south pole (Amundsen station) from Badger's link earlier.

More loveliness going on over the South Pole at the moment!
And spaceweather thinks there might be more to come

I'm really pleased to see you both in here in the middle of summer. The end of August seemed such a long way off.

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 24/06/2015 10:45

Nice to see you as well, DustBunny!
I still do the occasional glance in to see if there's a chance of Aurora but August did seem a long way off when all the N. Hemisphere webcams seemed to shut down together. I thought there wouldn't be much chance of seeing anything from the S. Hemisphere as there aren't many webcams but it's been a real treat to see Aurora over the South Pole.

DustBunnyFarmer · 24/06/2015 10:55

I agree about seeing the aurora australis over the south pole - that camera you found is a gem.

GloriaSmud · 25/06/2015 21:28

Spaceweather thinks there might be a chance of seeing more Aurora in the next few days.

DustBunnyFarmer · 25/06/2015 21:34

This is Tasmania just now. I've also been checking in on the South Pole camera this afternoon/evening since I got home. There is just general diffuse aurora in shot pretty much all of the time.

Yep, southern lights still in full swing at the South Pole.

Hint of green on the south pole camera at the mo at the edges of the camera shot. I'll keep an eye on it.

GloriaSmud · 07/07/2015 07:59

According to spaceweather, there's a fast-growing sunspot that might produce solar flares soon.

DustBunnyFarmer · 07/07/2015 18:02

Good spot Gloria. I'll keep an eye on the cameras.

DustBunnyFarmer · 07/07/2015 19:41

A bit of a white out, but some green - not sure whether it's aurora or some kind of camera effect.

Wow that's a nice one, DustBunny (I think the green around the corners is the camera rather than aurora ~ 'tis an annoying effect, that one!)

(Just posting the link again because I can't remember the website address and I'm fed up of going up the thread to find it! South Pole webcam.)

We'll have filled the thread before the new borealis season - we should start collating links to the good cameras before we start next winter's thread.
