Armchair aurora watching

I'm starting this discussion because I was in danger of hijacking the Icelandic volcano thread. I started using the Mila Icelandic webcams to watch the eruption at Holoraun (the Bardabunga webcams), but lately I've seen the aurora borealis quite a few times on the other webcams, particularly the Thingvellir webcam www.livefromiceland.is/webcams/thingvellir/, although the lights can be seen sometimes on the Hekla and Jokulsarlon ones.

I am posting a couple of pics below for comparison to get you started. The first is a lovely aurora shot at Thingvellir from September, then a more blurry one from last night and a normal dark evening shot.

The University of Alaska has a good app. This is their live status map. I've centred it on the UK.

Things livening up at Porjus and Sodankyla again.

Not really looked at the aurora websites for a few days but Abisko is looking lovely tonight. This was just as the sun set a little while ago.

A message has appeared on the Abisko live camera page saying it has been disabled because the season has ended. Not sure if its still taking pics....

I think it is still taking pictures at the moment but if it does stop - noooooooo, it's one of my favourites!

I think Abisko has finally quit for the season. Shame, because Kiruna is busy and Porjus. I guess we are nearly out of luck til the autumn.

Porjus has curtain lights at the mo, though nothing too dramatic.

I'm really bummed out about Abisko going down.

Looks like that's properly it for Abisko this season. S'pose have to look to the Southern Hemisphere now for Aurora spotting.

According to Spaceweather, looks like there's a chance of Aurora from 7th April.

Stuff happening at Porjus just now - although it seems to be rainy/thawing, lots of droplets on the camera.

And hello Gloria - I guess we'll not see much of one another unless our paths cross elsewhere on MN until the autumn when Abisko gets switched back on. It's been good to have company over the winter to share my fixation on the northern lights. Thanks!
