I'm starting this discussion because I was in danger of hijacking the Icelandic volcano thread. I started using the Mila Icelandic webcams to watch the eruption at Holoraun (the Bardabunga webcams), but lately I've seen the aurora borealis quite a few times on the other webcams, particularly the Thingvellir webcam www.livefromiceland.is/webcams/thingvellir/, although the lights can be seen sometimes on the Hekla and Jokulsarlon ones.

Another OP posted a link to the Hotel Ranga aurora cam, which is here: www.hotelranga.is/northern-lights/northern-light-webcam/

I am posting a couple of pics below for comparison to get you started. The first is a lovely aurora shot at Thingvellir from September, then a more blurry one from last night and a normal dark evening shot.

If you can find any other lovely aurora cams please post links (and pics) below. Happy hunting!

I'm back I'm back !

So I went. I did see the northern lights but it wasn't a very good show I'm afraid. No green bits just shafts of light fading in and out. Was still very beautiful though.

I will just have to I again. I'm also in the north if the country so hoping to see some here maybe...

DustBunnyFarmer · 18/03/2015 06:52

They just showed some aurora pics from Islay and Scotland last night on Breakfast. Envy

Then I saw Notrevealing's update. Envy

Notrevealing - Another poster a page or two above said that the lights appear white to the naked eye.

Some lucky people saw some aurora Envy and as far south as Staffordshire.

pearlgirl · 18/03/2015 18:46

I've just looked at the pics on the mlb.is website - they are fab. It was cloudy here last night so we didn't see anything.

DustBunnyFarmer · 18/03/2015 19:54

Look how far south it came last night: www.theguardian.com/travel/gallery/2015/mar/18/the-northern-lights-in-pictures

I think I heard there were reports it was seen as far south as Oxfordshire. Couldn't see a thing here as it was cold and foggy.

DustBunnyFarmer · 18/03/2015 21:47

Let's put it this way, if I'd gone outside last night where I was staying (away from home) I might well have seen it with my own eyes. But I didn't even know it was happening because I was in the back of beyond with no wifi and patchy mobile, but lovely dark skies.

Oh really gloria ?
Interesting.

Although I know someone who did see a greenish light last night when they went out to look. Sadly I live in a city so no chance.

I've been pondering our summer month options. Is the La Silla observatory in Chile's Atacama desert far enough south to be in the Aurora Australis range?

OP posts:
PseudoBadger · 18/03/2015 23:18

I don't think so really.

DustBunnyFarmer · 18/03/2015 23:21

Thanks Badger. I went and got my atlas off the bookshelf after I posted and had arrived at the same conclusion. There's actually very little habitated land in the right range.

I've done a little 'Google' and got a small list of Southern Hemisphere webcams for possible aurora sighting.

South Georgia webcam 1 and webcam 2
Hobart webcam
US Antarctic Programme
South Pole observatory

Those places are reasonably close to each other, as shown by the images.

DustBunnyFarmer · 19/03/2015 22:27

Porjus is pretty right now.

Good sleuthing on the southern hemisphere cameras Gloria!

Purple and green tonight at Porjus. Sodankyla showing diffuse green glow - quite pretty too, though I didn't take a pic.

Interesting to see that our old favourite Porjus camera is still live at www.porjus.eu/aurora-webcams, albeit rather grainy.

OP posts:
DustBunnyFarmer · 20/03/2015 21:44

Interesting shot. I am keeping an eye on the Porjus fisheye to see if it shows up on there too. I am now out of pictures though.

OMG, it was the start of something - it is going bananas on that camera now (the west Porjus one on the link above). Of course, now I have no pics left.

OP posts:
DustBunnyFarmer · 20/03/2015 21:49

Showing on the Porjus fisheye on our main site and Muonio now too. It is very bright and in a clear curtain/falling star pattern.

The cloud at Abisko is also lifting, so I'm expecting good things there too.

This photo was taken just a 5 minute walk from my house by a local professional photographer. I'm in Fort McMurray, Canada.

Locals here can be quite blasé about them. I've only been here 4 years, so I still have my nose pressed firmly to the window.

Kiruna getting in on the party too.

Welcome Moose! And thank you for saving me from myself. That is a mighty fine shot. I am green with envy at your proximity to the lights.
