and it's a big 'un!
This time at Bárðarbunga, with over 200 earthquakes recorded so far and last night, the Icelandic Met Office raised the aviation colour code to yellow to reflect the unrest that's going on.

The edge of the lava and fountains are showing up well, now it's beginning to get dark.

I've been quietly watching this thread. Amazing knowledge you have ladies! It's really fascinating. I'm beginning to wonder if we need to prepare for a cold winter if she erupts?

nannynick · 06/09/2014 21:33

Yes, is looking nicer now the sun has set.

Also lurking and finding it fascinating and flying soon!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/09/2014 22:22

Apatite if it was the worst case scenario I'm not sure how quickly the eruption would affect the climate. At the moment it is being compared to Mt Pinatuba, which lowered global temps by about 0.5c. This eruption would affect the northern hemisphere more.

I semi seriously considered cancelling our long saved for new windows so I could go on a helicopter tour of the eruption Blush dh telling me I could if it was that important to me bought me back to common sense.

Apatite1 · 06/09/2014 22:38

I'd still get those windows OYBBK!

You're right though, there's no predicting how much this volcano will affect our next winter. I just wish there was some indication as to whether I need to get our windows double glazed and buy a down parka this year or not. Certainly last winter was not cold at all!

BardarbungaBardarbing · 06/09/2014 22:39

The helicopter tour would be amazing.

RedToothBrush · 07/09/2014 09:54

5.7 earthquake this morning at Bardarbunga caldera...

magimedi · 07/09/2014 10:42

If I win the lottery (big prize) I promise I will treat you to that trip, OYBBK - but I'm not coming with you - far too scary for me!

magimedi · 07/09/2014 10:42

PS Your DH sounds lovely.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/09/2014 12:13

Ouch RTB. It has to give sometime surely?

Magimedi - that's lovely of you :)
Dh is lovely too. It meant a huge amount to me that he said I could if I wanted. I couldn't be that selfish though and I did point out to him that I could get over there and then they close the airspace and we'd have paid for me to see nothing

RedToothBrush · 07/09/2014 13:42

Volcano Cafe's latest blog is interesting OYBBK.

volcanocafe.wordpress.com/2014/09/06/changes-in-bardarbunga-caldera/

Plus apparently I've just read on FB:
the molten lava has reached the glacial river Jökulsá á fjöllum and is running into it, which means there is a lot of steam rising up and some "violent magma/water interaction"

Interesting post from Dave McGarvie, his thoughts on what might happen if there's an eruption at Bárðarbunga.

Some more webcams ~ from south of Vatnajökull (looking towards the eruption), someone on volcanocafe thought that they could see an orange glow last night at Jokulsarlon and from the north (looking south), a webcam at the Reynihlid Hotel at Myvatn.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/09/2014 15:46

It is RTB :)

They've relaxed restrictions for scientists and media so we should get some more close up photos from the ground hopefully.

GlaceDragonflies · 07/09/2014 19:38

This bit from Dave McGarvie is a bit worrying:
"Yes there will probably be disruption to commercial air travel, but for the simple reason that all planes were grounded by law in 2010 and this law has changed means it will never again be as bad as 2010." - so there might be reason not to fly but the law will let them?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/09/2014 21:17

Further up the thread Glace I've explained about air travel.

GlaceDragonflies · 07/09/2014 21:26

I'd missed that about the caldera floor, that's going to be a big issue. As for air travel, storm in a teacup in that respect, not massively significant relative to other issues.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/09/2014 21:51

Agreed.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/09/2014 18:28

Cool Glace :)

The caldera floor seems to have sunk another 2.5-3m over the past two days. Slow motion collapse!

GlaceDragonflies · 08/09/2014 18:58

Have you seen the video of the PNG eruption with the sound?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/09/2014 19:18

The PNG eruption?

GlaceDragonflies · 08/09/2014 19:27

here

nannynick · 08/09/2014 19:43

Yes, being described as a slow caldera collapse.

Woah Glace! That is some Shock shock wave.
