and it's a big 'un!
This time at Bárðarbunga, with over 200 earthquakes recorded so far and last night, the Icelandic Met Office raised the aviation colour code to yellow to reflect the unrest that's going on.

Thanks Nannynick.,wonder what will happen next.....

nannynick · 08/09/2014 20:19

If anyone fancies some light reading Grin then I have found

Volcanology and Geothermal Energy (1992) available online. It has info about Caldera's and Iceland.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/09/2014 20:41

That looks pretty good :)

GloriaSmud · 08/09/2014 20:41

Shock at that shockwave!

Jón Frímann's latest post ~ he's "almost certain" there's going to be an eruption from the Bárðarbunga caldera.

Lovely picture, maybe it is,computer generated or maybe real but it's lovely anyway,

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/09/2014 07:57

Jon Fr thinks a subglacial reuption is under way. Sadly im off to work so I'll have to find out later if he is correct or not.

GloriaSmud · 09/09/2014 09:50

I read that on Jon's blog. Seems to be a waiting game now and everyone's watching the webcams!

Signing in to mark my place, I've been following this thread since it started and reading volcano cafe and watching webcams but I never comment because I have nothing of use to add. This thread is my first thing in the morning and last thing at night check in! It's just so fascinating seeing the earth doing what it's always done via webcam. I don't give a damn if it affects my future holiday plans either, it's far too interesting for me to want it to stop and I've stockpiled water and flour and tins of food just in case we have a long cold winter because I like that sort of thing.

BardarbungaBardarbing · 09/09/2014 12:00

LostinWales I feel the same way about this thread!

Mmm : a supplies stockpile, there's an idea.Wink

GlaceDragonflies · 09/09/2014 12:01

One of the comments on the page about the sub glacial eruption is talking about a plan b evacuation for all of Iceland, I wonder if it could really come to that?

GloriaSmud · 09/09/2014 12:02

I find it gives a warm, fuzzy feeling stockpiling food for a possible cold winter, Lost!

Over on volcanocafe, Carl thinks he can see the beginnings of a lake on the webcam from the lava making a natural dam in the river.

It's always good to have a plan B..

GloriaSmud · 09/09/2014 12:13

I think knowing how volcanic Iceland is and from looking at what's happened in the past, I think the authorities have to consider an evacuation if the worst happens.

Just reading Jon Frimann's latest (17.32 UTC) and from his tone he sounds like he is getting quite excited by it all now (excited? Not sure of the right word, his last missive sounds like it was written in the presence of an adrenaline rush!)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/09/2014 21:47

Norway are apparently suffering with so2 stench.

GlaceDragonflies · 09/09/2014 21:49

That concerns me, mainly because I have asthma and so it'd be bad news if it was the same here. Luckily we're down in the south west so have time to find the inhalers emigrate.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/09/2014 21:52

Dd has well controlled mild asthma. When we visited some fumaroles on Vulcano a few years ago I have to be honest, she did struggle a bit. It might be worth checking your inhaler stock though the levels would be much more dilute than we experienced.

LavaDragonflies · 09/09/2014 21:56

Thanks, I have a good stock and sure it'll be fine. It's not a massive concern but just a little issue I need to be aware IYSWIM - I noticed it a little with all that pollution last year.

pearlgirl · 09/09/2014 22:01

I' m another one who checks this thread last thing at night and early morning.
In early August they had closed part of one of the glaciers we were walking on in Iceland because the glacier edge had started to split and was producing icebergs and also the levels of so2 were higher than normal in the river - which was called the "smelly river" - it did stink.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/09/2014 22:10

It is well worth being aware of :) better to prevent an asthma attack than fight one off.

Newbiecrafter · 09/09/2014 22:18

Hello everyone.

So, does anyone have a view on whether JonF is right or not? He seems to be very well regarded.

I'm another one who follows this thread religiously. I finally saw what R2d2 is. It made me smile when I figured it out. I also try and follow volcano cafe and JonF but don't really 'get' it all. Doesn't stop me being completely hooked though.

I'm a but shocked that if bad enough an eruption would warrant iceland being evacuated. I'm still Shock at that.

Nannynick, the PNG sound shock video is amazing. I love watching the sound waves travel through the clouds. Amazing! Thanks for linking to that.

I can't access the webcams from mila on my ipad but can on a laptop. Does anyone know why? I love the scenes at dusk and nightfall, it is so beautiful.

Thanks so much to Gloriasmud, OYBBK, glacé and Nannynick for keeping us all updated. You're all brilliant. Thanks

stihlhere · 09/09/2014 22:58

Have just come across this thread. Haven't had time to read the whole thing yet, but I will.

We are due to fly out to Iceland for the October half term. Starting to worry whether that will happen after all. Just glad we haven't told the boys about the trip yet Sad

Apatite1 · 09/09/2014 23:13

I feel the sudden urge to stockpile......chocolate!

LavaDragonflies · 10/09/2014 05:52

Whereabouts in Iceland are you planning to go? This is a long way from most of the tourist areas. At the moment the so2 cloud is going over to Norway and Russia and I think that is likely to be the biggest risk depending where you are going.
Reyjavik and pingvellir are fine. This isn't affecting the golden circle tours.
The foreign office aren't saying don't travel.

GloriaSmud · 10/09/2014 06:42

Civil Protection Agency is "Gravely Concerned" about Bardarbunga. Jon Fr posted that "when they get 'concerned', he gets terrified."
