Weather warnings part 3 - February storms.

Really hoped we wouldnt need another thread so soon.

Tomorrow we have one dangerous storm with winds potentially 90mph off welsh coasts, 80mph inland and hitting Ireland very hard too.

met office warnings for heavy rain (exactly where we dont need it but also hitting western scotland), snow, perhaps even down to lower ground at times over night even pretty far south and storm force winds. Also widespread gales across England.

Then friday night into Saturday we have another potentially damaging low. The models have really struggled with this one and it needs a careful eye keeping on it.

Because the winds look so bad tomorrow for some (enough in the amber areas for me to suggest that you consider whether your journey is essential), I'll be logging on around 7:15am to update. My biggest concern is western Wales in the afternoon. However the track may change as the storm develops so the amber warning area may shift. It is possible that the met office may issue some red warnings close to the morning.

Looking further on, although storms may track to their more usual position (north of scotland) as the month goes on, unfortunately the rain looks set to continue, with little in the way of respite.

Ooh, glad I've found this thread.

We have a convention on Saturday and will need to drive from Newark to Telford at like 7am. And then back at around 5.30pm.

Are we likely to get there?

HungryHorace · 12/02/2014 23:31

Don't know...bigger = more stable, maybe? I'm no physicist, it has to be said!

They're being bussed to a hotel now, so at least they can sleep soon, if they're not too wired after the hassle!

GingerMaman · 12/02/2014 23:35

How does the weather look this weekend? Was hoping to do a long journey across the country,

bobbinogs · 12/02/2014 23:57

I left clitheroe for London at 4.30 this morning..... I left London at 4.30 this afternoon.....I am still on the train, stuck, outside preston waiting for a platform......bloody weather....I want to die....put me out of my misery now

RedToothBrush · 13/02/2014 00:28

I've just read story about the Malaysian Everton fan who travelled 9000miles to see them play this evening. He posted his photo on twitter of him sitting in his seat waiting for kick off.

Only for the match to be called off.

Luckily the club found out and invited him to the dressing room to meet the players and gave him a special tour.

SpottyTeacakes · 13/02/2014 01:21

Bobbin I hope you've got somewhere now??

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/02/2014 06:18

Very quickly before I head out to limited Internet connection. Fridays/Saturday storm is still looking very much like it will bring a lot of heavy rain across much of the UK. Strongest winds appear to be over Friday night and seem to be in the SE and southern England with quite far inland gusts to 70mph, maybe 80 mph on the SE coast and 50-60mph more widespread. So a less strong storm wind wise than yesterday but don't underestimate it, it's still very strong. I think the main concern for most will be the rain though.

Catch you all later!

OYBBK we had snow!

bobbinogs · 13/02/2014 08:04

I got home by 3, just up to take the kids to school then going back to bed for a couple of hours

HungryHorace · 13/02/2014 08:22

Bloody hell, bobbinogs. That's what you call an epic journey.

At least you got back safely. You definitely deserve to head back to bed!

sewingandcakes · 13/02/2014 09:17

Things weren't too bad in our bit of Rossendale, I think we must have been a bit sheltered between two hills. We've a couple of loose tiles (again), as have the neighbours, but no trees or even branches on the streets. It seems that Manchester, where we used to live, had it worse.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/02/2014 09:27

Everyone OK? We need to go and clear the tree off our fence presently (actually it looks like a big branch not a whole tree).

OYBBK, how's Saturday/sunday looking? - it's half term so I'm sure lots of people will be planning to travel - our DD is due to go on her school ski trip, coach from Lancashire down to Dover and then overnight ferry.

GloriaSmud · 13/02/2014 10:13

Totally different day to yesterday here (Leicester) Bright sunshine and 7.1C. My neighbours have some fence panels down in their front garden and my metal archway in the back garden, which has never coped well in strong winds, was at a funny angle this morning (think it was being kept up by the honeysuckle growing up it!) but that's been it from what I've seen of storm damage here.

Thought I'd do a link to the metoffice weather warnings for the next few days. I have a feeling the SW and South might get changed to an Amber warning later today, for the storm tomorrow/Saturday.

SlowlorisIncognito · 13/02/2014 10:14

Apparently there is now snow and ice on Bodmin moor and Exmoor! I didn't think it was that cold. I don't think the roads have been properly gritted due to the fallen trees and flooding last night =/

Otherwise today is calm and sunny! It seems like most of the fallen trees have been cleared around here although some power lines have come down so people are still without power. I suggest if you're coming to the SW (and elsewhere) it might be a good idea to ring in advance to check for flooding and if where you're staying will have power.

Friday and Saturday have further yellow warnings for wind and rain ATM which will probably make any flooding worse :(.

littleredsquirrel · 13/02/2014 10:15

two large trees down in our garden in Notts. Fortunately trees that we wanted out anyway so no harm done there!

RedToothBrush · 13/02/2014 11:21

Its bright and pretty sunny here today. Couldn't be much more different!

digerd · 13/02/2014 11:26

se.
Quite spring-like today so far. Crocuses blooming while sun is shining.
Yesterday's afternoon dog walk was a nightmare so hoping to enjoy today's calm and sunny afternoon.

MillyBlodyn · 13/02/2014 11:29

OMG ha ha ha ha !!!! So sorry about my" Electricity off epic ". Don't know what happened there. I haven't laughed so much in ages.
Electricity has just come back on. Trees down on the road. Part of a tree down in our field, half the roof slates are off and parts of the roof are completely exposed and my daughters car has been badly hit by flying roof slates. Might be a write off which is not good. Have just dropped it off at the local garage to have it assessed. DH has gone to the nearest town to buy more slates and then he will spend the day on the roof putting them up before the rain comes. Sigh!!!!
Last night we had sandwiches and lots of panads (tea) made on the gas camping stove and played scrabble. It was sort of nice having both kids (21 and 23) in the lounge by the fire playing games with us like when they were little.
Hope everyone else is ok today. Glad the lady who was making the epic journey got there in the end.

RedToothBrush · 13/02/2014 11:35

How the heck can you crash I car like this?!

LadyStark · 13/02/2014 11:52

Heavy rain and wind here again in Surrey, hoping it passes pretty quickly.

Clutterbugsmum · 13/02/2014 12:11

Nice sunny day here, at the moment.

But I worried about tomorrow as dh has to go to Nottingham for work.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/02/2014 12:16

will be able to do some forecasting later. on my phone at the moment.

GloriaSmud · 13/02/2014 12:29

SW have now got an Amber Warning for rain.

SlowlorisIncognito · 13/02/2014 12:47

I am very glad that I don't have to go out tomorrow. I think the heavy rain could cause flash floods in places like seen yesterday :(.

Has anyone seen this picture? Utterly terrifying. i3.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article3139077.ece/ALTERNATES/s2197/CS56275964An-overturned-lor-3139077.jpg

Hope everyone is safe and well and continues to stay safe.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/02/2014 13:15

amber warnings will do the forecasting a bit later.
