Thought as much....I shouldn't moan, us lot in Manchester are too high up to get flooded....really feel for those who have though Sad

digerd · 09/02/2014 18:11

My vulnerable rose arch has now fallen apart far worse than on the previous storms which I mendedSad.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/02/2014 18:20

that may be true leesmum, but you do get more than your fair share of grey days there and less than your fair share of snow.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/02/2014 20:13

updated warnings include ice over night on untreated surfaces and snow in parts of Scotland Tuesday.

NE Hants checking in Smile
Well Wednesdays bodge it fence mending withstood the wind and rain this weekend despite DH's scepticism but the fence on the other side fell over, doh!
We were woken at maybe 4am by the wind this morning but a much quieter day. We've been in Bath for a few days and drove back down the M4 yesterday, loads of flooded fields on either side especially towards Reading Sad.
I'd really like a proper cold snap now, dry, clear and cold for a few days please...

pepperrabbit · 09/02/2014 20:19

Hmm, looks like yellow warnings for Tues, Wed AND Thurs kind of rule that out...

flootshoot · 10/02/2014 06:01

Surrey here. DS' school closed today to be used by the community after 'catastrophic flooding'. :(

mankyscotslass · 10/02/2014 06:05

It really has been dry here in Manchester, compared to the rest of the country that is! It has been the same over the last couple of years. I heard a United Utilities worker talking last summer and he said Manchester had been drier than usual for a while.

The ground here is sodden, but no floods.

I am worried about my Aunt in Windsor now.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/02/2014 09:05

I'm in a very serious mood about the weather for this week. Please, take heed.

We have 3 time periods to look at:

Tonight into tomorrow: Heavy rain moving in from the west. This could turn to snow, not only in the areas indicated by the met office warnings but also over northern and welsh hilly areas. Many parts could once again see 25mm of rain but I'm especially concerned about the SW and the Thames areas.

Wednesday: Heavy rain will once again be a serious issue. But we need to also look at the winds. Maybe 70mph even inland in the south. Higher along coastal areas, in western areas we could be looking up towards 80-90mph. This is a very nasty and potential dangerous storm. I will update as best as I can.

Friday: A similar storm to wednesday seems likely, but we need to get closer to the time to firm up the details.

met ofice warnings do not have risk areas for wind yet, but I suspect they will go up later today and I think that by tomorrow there will be amber warnings for the SW and the southern coast.

You can't sodding win this winter, it finally stops raining and the school bus doesn't turn up.

Probably because instead of the bridge being flooded - the road is a sheet of ice!

MooncupGoddess · 10/02/2014 09:20

That is worrying, OYBBK. The Thames valley situation is really concerning - it is such a heavily populated area. I heard on the news last night that tidal waters are now reaching the river beyond Teddington (where there are big locks and which is usually the limit of the tidal Thames) - so the residents of Shepperton, Walton etc are getting extra water from both upstream and downstream, though at least they can close the Thames Barrier to limit the tidal effects.

I'm guessing I'm not the only Londoner to feel very, very grateful for the Thames Barrier.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/02/2014 09:27

I am genuinely sorry Hester. I really wish there was something I could do to help. I dread looking at the weather at the moment.

Nocomet - its exactly what isnt needed either - freezing of the floods. We need this to subside in a quiet gentle way, not for it to be replaced by below freezing temperatures which would cause damage in a new way.

travellingwilbury · 10/02/2014 09:46

That really doesn't sound good does it ?

Hester , I am so sorry , I don't think you are alone in feeling like that , it feels like many people are just one rainy day away from a complete meltdown .

magimedi · 10/02/2014 09:55

Brew & Cake for hester - as wilbury says you aren't alone - it's becoming so bloody dire & feels as if it will never end.

The same for OYBBK as well - I look to your forecast before any one elses. Flowers

CatAmongThePigeons · 10/02/2014 09:59

Goodness, there just is no let up in the weather. Sad

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/02/2014 10:00

Thank you Magi.

I am very aware that what I type can have a profound effect on people and I dont take that at all lightly. if anyone is finding the forecasts to distressing then please hide the thread. The last thing I want to do is make things worse for people.

OP posts:
SnakeyMcBadass · 10/02/2014 10:05

I also take your forecast more seriously than the tv weather, Kitten. You have a higher success rate imo. Bloody lousy for everyone in the south :( We're soggy but not badly affected here in South Derbyshire, just a sea of mud.

MooncupGoddess · 10/02/2014 10:07

Your forecasts are amazing, OYBBK... we are all very grateful.

It must be hard because the only times this board gets significant traffic is when the weather is causing problems. When it's lovely and sunny we're all out enjoying ourselves!

oricella · 10/02/2014 10:12

It's hard to imagine from up here; sunny and calm and almost spring like way up north.

Kitten you're doing a great job in explaining the weather; don't think for a minute think that it's you upsetting people! Flowers - it's not what you type, it's what you type about and that's just way out of anyone's control

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/02/2014 10:29

I so wish this thread didnt still need to run! I think it will run into a third soon. What a winter :(

I just hope that even though it is grim reading, it does help people to prepare in whatever way they can. For some, no matter what preparation they do, it wont make a difference, except even then, things can be moved upstairs, refuges found for pets, cars moved. For others perhaps it will prompt them to get emergency repairs done while the weather is quiet, or allow them to get a head start on hunting for sandbags.

OP posts:
flootshoot · 10/02/2014 10:31

It's utterly shocking. We're ok so far but DS attends school in Wraysbury and it's absolutely deluged. Luckily we are further away from the river but I'm not counting my chickens. I'm packing a bag with overnight gear for all of us just in case.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/02/2014 10:36

That is sensible. Don't forget the environment agency website for the latest warnings. Have to say, their website is holding up much better than it has in the past.

OP posts:
flootshoot · 10/02/2014 11:29

Thanks OYBBK. The website says our postcode is under a severe flood warning but as yet the nearest water is about 300 yards away and needs to come up a few feet more to reach us. Drains getting backed up with groundwater though so who knows? Important paperwork upstairs now!

HesterShaw · 10/02/2014 11:48

"Scaremongering"? Snort. Ignore the nasty lady. We all think you're great.
