OYBBK thanks :) Might try to get an early night and some sleep tonight then, sounds as if we're going to be on 'flood watch' Fri/Sat at least.

The road home from work was flooded last night (before the rain started) - I imagine it will be worse tonight, cue every tosser in the local district flying down it (very dark, tree lined country road now with 'lakes').

I hope Hester is OK - and their sea front business :(

HesterShaw · 05/02/2014 15:08

Wave expert checking in

Coastal damage which was done last night was done with SE and S winds and SSW swell direction. It was mahoosive. Coming up tomorrow and the weekend are what they're calling "the biggest waves in the world" Hmm (biggest in the world at that moment anyway). And they mean swell height not waves. However it will be westerly swell. This is better for the south coast, but north Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and the Welsh coasts will see some enormous waves. Anyone know the Watering Hole in Perranporth? I reckon it's time to say goodbye :(

Now I'm off to try and locate some gas for the camping stove and some candles. This is getting tedious.

HesterShaw · 05/02/2014 15:09

Oh and thank you for the concern ladies...the business survived the night!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/02/2014 15:37

Thats some very good news amongst the gloom Hester :)

Good job pepper!

So pleased your business was OK, Hester.

I have just been for a walk/blow along the front at Eastbourne. Quite safe, upper prom with no waves breaking over it. But, in the 8 years I've lived near Eastbourne I have never seen such a massive swell. I can't imagine what it must be like in the SW & Wales.

Stay safe & take care all of you down that way.

Lovecat · 05/02/2014 15:50

Thanks OYBBK, I was fearing that might be the case... :(

Ah well, I shall tell the parents to dress them for bad weather and bring a change of clothing!

BlackeyedSusan · 05/02/2014 16:42

oh heck

digerd · 05/02/2014 17:06

Well, that's odd. It is 9 degrees out atm. Rather unusually mild for the time of year at duskHmm. SE

threebats · 05/02/2014 17:33

magi The wind has picked up considerably here since about 3pm - I ran over the road to pick up a prescription to go get it for neighbour and it was blowing in a different direction to last night and this morning (for example, my bedroom window which was open last night with no ill effect is now closed as its sucked my curtains up and spat them back out again with my vase included!) It sounds worse than last night, it feels very windy - if you open your car door, its out of your hands in a second. This I consider to be wind, not what we had last night, this has me locking my bins in the shed for the night. Yet we were warned about last night and not about this afternoon - if you get it after us - its on its way so secure bins and lock gates. Having said that, its still not rip the roof off, blink out the lights bad. Yet. It is picking up more at the moment, I can just make out the trees outside my kitchen (given its getting dark) and they look very angry swirling about - my cats are hibernating indoors so I have had to put out litter for the night. My cats are hard buggers but they won't go past the back door step. I trust my cats - if they are staying in, its getting bad Grin

threebats · 05/02/2014 17:34

digerd Swansea to the SW..? If so, its on its way to you - its here now, as post above says... No rain as yet.

Meglet · 05/02/2014 17:43

hester that's the pub on the beach isn't it Sad.

magimedi · 05/02/2014 17:46

Stay safe, threebats & don't go out if you really don't have to.

pinkkoala · 05/02/2014 18:03

I like the watering hole in perranporth, mimd you i love perranporth, we were thinking of holidaying there this year.

threebats · 05/02/2014 18:11

I have been out - I had to go out to see for myself - I don't mean wave watching or anything daft like that - just standing in the middle of the park and listening to it, I love the sound which is inappropriate given the suffering people are in right now because of it all but to stand in a place where there is no traffic and just listen to it is quite a thing to hear... Its not so bad now though, its easing off somewhat.

Jellykat · 05/02/2014 18:39

Signing in West Pembrokeshire here, been absolutely peeing down again all day and the wind is horrendous.

Waters now getting in down the chimney and cracking the breast in DSs bedroom, he's going to have to sleep elsewhere tonight..
At work on Friday, water started pouring in around the window frames and down the spotlights..
I can't take it anymore!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/02/2014 19:31

nightmare jellykat - our buildings just arent designed to take monsoon conditions. Our latest roof repair attempt has failed but the damage is remaining limited to the loft for present.

I hate to say it but the models are starting to come out with another nasty after this weekend for mid week. Please, let them be wrong, its already at emergency levels in much of the SW and some of Wales and becoming so in other parts of the south.

Saturday does look stormy but at the moment its take it day by day. Tomorrow the rain is going to move in from the south/SW rather faster than I expected (Reaching London -Cardiff by late morning) giving approximately 24 hours of rain across England and Wales.

LostInWales · 05/02/2014 19:57

It's been astonishingly wet today again hasn't it. Even for round here!

Jellykat · 05/02/2014 20:04

< waves back at LostInWales >
I know, they originally said it would ease this afternoon, and give us a break before the next bout.. Its gonna absolutely chuck it down tomorrow too, according to Derek.
Electricity board are quids in this Winter, mines already £270 this quarter and rising,.. Dehumidifiers innit?

TheGashlycrumbTinies · 05/02/2014 20:12

Dorset calling, this is getting tedious in the extreme.

Sick of driving through floodwater, and dropping down pot holes, spent over £350 on my car in the last 2 weeks due to "weather related injuries"

Glad we had a French Drain installed after the last flood.

HesterShaw · 05/02/2014 20:16

You know I said westerly for predicted swells? Well it's south westerly. That means places like Mullion and Porthleven will suffer a lot more damage I fear.

But the Watering Hole may be spared after all....

Marne · 05/02/2014 20:26

Boiled, my car has suffered too, feels like one of my wheels is going to full off thanks to the huge pot holes Sad.

PaxmansGusset · 05/02/2014 20:30

Surrey here. Blowy and wet here, but nothing too dreadful. I'm a bit worried about next door's trees going over, as they were damaged in the last storm (that took some of our roof tiles) and have a distinct lean to the right. Luckily for us they're leaning away from us, which is good for us but not for our neighbours.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/02/2014 20:34

Oh no Hester :(

I really wish I could bring good news for everyone.

Threebats what.can we expect in Swansea. All quiet here ATM

Helenagrace · 05/02/2014 20:40

Noooooo not the Watering Hole at Perranporth. We had the most wonderful fortnight there two years ago. We hope to go back soon.

We now have three days of Amber rain warnings. Today has been wild. Huge swell and ferocious waves.
