Ladycelia, they are in a bit of a rubbish spot for this :(
It's actually lovely here at the moment.
Hester, are they coastal/river villages?

We had a lovely bright start here today, clouding over a bit now. Last night was horrendous with wind and rain - when we got up this morning our entire water butt, which as you can imagine was completely full - had blown over! Shock Confused.
It must have been unstable as I can't imagine the fence resisting a gust a wind strong enough to overturn a full water butt Hmm
Luckily I can't see us needing to water the garden or conserve water until next century at this rate...

Yes, villages on the north coast. The north coast generally gets it worse, but the coming week looks like SSE so it'll be worse on this coast.

puffinnuffin · 01/02/2014 14:05

We have had very off weather here (SE). It keeps alternating between lovely sunshine, then torrential rain or hail. At one point it was bright sunshine and very heavy hail!

mankyscotslass · 01/02/2014 16:44

Wild, wet and windy here now.

kippersmum · 01/02/2014 17:16

LadyCelia the weather & tides in the IOM have been fairly bad today but stopped just below the level we had earlier in January so there has been less flooding. It is still blowing a gale however. If there is any particular bit of the island you want to check on PM me, I've been out & about all day!

Nocomet · 01/02/2014 17:29

Huge lake round Gloucester, river over the road - very high tide and it's pouring again!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/02/2014 20:27

Some how we skipped the rain during the day and I got a jumper wash dry on the line. Bit of a miracle that.

Having just walked the dog along the local beach & headland I can confirm that it is definitely severe gales still in the IOM, but no rain thank god. My normally slightly frizzy hair looks like I've stuck my fingers in an electric socket :)

S Herts.
it was dry and sunny all day yesterday but the fields were full of pools. The walls of canal had been made higher last year but noticed the water was higher than usual - it is controlled so no fear of flooding the garden.
5 degrees atm and fluffy clouds which are red as the sun rises. Sky mostly clear

Nocomet · 02/02/2014 12:59

The Seven round Gloucester is having a field day - it's in
The fields and over the main road and with a huge bore due today, it's generally having fun.

Those of us who need to do things there are not so impressed.

My phone is also not cooperating.

LadyCelia · 02/02/2014 17:20

kippersmum (should have guessed you were Manx!) thank you, that's really kind of you - luckily a friend nearby emailed me to say DMs house is still intact, and the rest of the family are on the west side of the island so I think that's been OK this time? I hear its going to be bad again tomorrow though, fingers crossed the tides won't be as high again.

kippersmum · 02/02/2014 18:24

Hi Lady Celia, it is going to be high tides again tonight & tomorrow but no significant flooding is expected, just lots of debris on coastal roads etc. Search for "Isle of Man Constabulary Media Page" on fb. That will give the best up to date info as to what is going on & where. The west side of the island has been OK so far.

HesterShaw · 02/02/2014 18:45

I've been reading some alarming stuff about this coming week for the south coasts of Cornwall and Devon.

Meglet · 02/02/2014 18:56

OYBBK that's the highlight of winter these days, managing to get something dry on the line Hmm.

I had a beautiful wash of whites fluttering in the breeze today.

NK5BM3 · 02/02/2014 19:44

Our Sainsburys flooded because the river next to it overflowed. Very bad. Shock

SpottyTeacakes · 02/02/2014 19:53

Our nearest Currys has been closed since before Christmas due to flooding. John Lewis was closed too but has re opened now. That's what happens when you chuck a load of concrete onto an old floodplain....

HesterShaw · 02/02/2014 20:12

Idiots.

We have a new Sainsbury's which was pretty much built on a coastal swamp. There are some bungalows nearby. The resulting flood is edging closer every day towards the bungalows. I would be extremely unhappy with the planners if I lived there...

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/02/2014 21:10

I think the main issue through this week will now be pluvial flooding and the gales on Wednesday. High tides could still be an issue but not to the same extent.

Funnily enough, the areas that flood worst here are the ones that were once marshland. Don't need to be Einstein to see where the issue lies.

AIBU to love this thread just for the phrase 'pleuvial flooding' Grin

Urgh, it's just vile here still, ventured about 10 miles from home on Friday evening and had to turn back from one route because the river was over the road and the other way the road was flooded in three places with run off from the fields. Have you seen the bus at Newgale as well? That's not far from here, it happened before the council had closed the road near to high tide. It ended up sitting in what looks like a lake but is actually one of my favourite camping fields. And to think everyone laughed at Kevin Coster's Waterworld Wink.

Nocomet · 03/02/2014 00:19

pluvial is a great word, is there an equivalent for us rural people.

Other than it's pissed it down for so long, even our sandy soil has given up trying to drain.

digerd · 03/02/2014 07:23

Nocomet
Having once experienced the joys of having sandy soil - weeding and digging a joy, and lovely soft water- I wonder if that is what you have. ?? The heavy clay soil and hard water in my current area is a right pain.
We have the river Lea quite near us but never heard of it causing floods, luckily.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/02/2014 07:44

pluvial means flooding from rainfall :)
fluvial is flooding from rivers which is also going to be a big issue this week. Sadly coastal flooding doesnt seem to have a fancy uvial word that I know of.

Rain will mainly be an issue for the SW today, not too bad for the rest of us. Tomorrow evening/Wednesday is the next big system to watch out for. Grim doesnt describe it - gales, perhaps severe and between an inch or two of rain for southern (and maybe central) areas.

There might be some 'interesting' weather thursday but on Friday evening/Saturday, we have a riinse and repeat of tomorrows storm.
