We have two matches on Saturdays and one on Sundays schilke. they have to do a pitch inspection and we usually get told about ten minutes before we are due to leave that it's postponed. Angry

SpottyTeacakes · 28/01/2014 19:57

Stupid football Angry

Sparklingbrook · 28/01/2014 20:00

Yes Spotty. The lack of muddy and dirty kits and boots has been lovely.

pigsinmud · 28/01/2014 20:29

Oh sparkling I hate the 10 minute notice thing. You're up and ready and then you find out that you needn't have bothered!

Sparklingbrook · 28/01/2014 20:39

It's so annoying schilke. Everyone knows it will be a bog, but they have to go and check that it really is a bog. Angry

Meglet · 28/01/2014 22:38

hester I was wondering about the trees too. Some of the ones around here have been standing in water for over 2 weeks. What's going to happen if we have another storm, the roots must be sodden.

I'm planning for only indoor activities until March. If the rain does stop (fat chance) and the sun comes out then we'll get out for some long walks, but until then we're amusing ourselves inside. All the waterproofs and fleeces in the world can't persuade me to have another soggy walk in the mud.

digerd · 29/01/2014 07:27

SE.
Most dogs love the mud and puddles, but I am lucky as my little fluffy princess doesn'tGrin.

Think it rained all night long, but seems to have stopped.

Last Sunday the young lads were playing football here.

I wish I could say the models are backing away from the wet solution, but they really arent and we have some very windy weather coming up too.

There maybe some wet transient snow over higher ground today, even in southern england.

met office warnings note the snow risk for parts of northern england and Scotland. First time some of you up there will have seen snow this winter.

We may get gale warnings for saturday.

Leicester ~ dark and raining again.
Noticed that the wind's changed direction and coming from the east today so it feels colder.

The Express are reporting that Friday's storm has been named Storm Brigid while the Daily Mail has more pictures from Somerset (I'm Shock at the aerial picture of Thorney.)

Meanwhile over in the States, they're having more snow and winter storms, even places like Florida are forecast ice and snow (I like the picture of the 'snow rollers', they're really unusual looking.)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/01/2014 11:52

You can see the one of the drivers of the bonkers jet stream on this link
look at the contrast between the record warmth in Alaska and the cold in the east.

where does JP get the windspeed estimates from??? Western parts could see gusts between 60mph and 70mph for a time on Friday and on Saturday but in general wind gusts will be around the 40-50mph. Enough to bring down poor weakened trees.

And you cant get random forecasting companies naming storms. If the can do it, we can. What shall we call this one? I vote for Janus as its arriving on the last day of January and its name will summarise a really shit month weatherwise.

Janus sound fine to me :)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/01/2014 13:24

I know that this was written about the Vietnam war but it seems rather apt for the Somerset levels at the moment:

OP posts:
magimedi · 29/01/2014 13:25

Janus is OK for me too. Just as long as it stops raining sometime in February.

ChippingInWadesIn · 29/01/2014 13:29

What do you think - are we expecting rain, snow or sleet this weekend in the central south east? I'm just trying to see if it's possible to make plans with friends other than the ones on flood alert or if they will need hand holding/bailing out :(

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/01/2014 13:46

Rain chipping.

SpottyTeacakes · 29/01/2014 15:31

2.5 degrees outside. Brrrr.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/01/2014 18:40

I'm hoping that our temp doesnt drop too much further, getting a little close to snow temps for my liking tonight.

OP posts:
SpottyTeacakes · 29/01/2014 19:04

What is it out there now? There was sleety stuff in haslemere today.

mscnile · 29/01/2014 19:06

Brrr. Curtailed my run this morning due to the driving sleet. We now have snow forecast for early hours of tomorrow, but no snow warning (NE) Hmm

Meglet · 29/01/2014 19:44

Potato prices have shot up due to last years bad spring and the recent wet weather. I'd heard it was likely to happen but even so I was standing in the veg aisle like this >> Shock.

And I think something is up with caterpillars, unless I'm being stalked. I found one on the interior stairwell at work last week (4 floors up) and one on my landing. The weather has been so mild (so far) that the creepy crawlies must think it's spring.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/01/2014 19:47

I wont be surprised if there are a few places that end up with surprise snowfall.

Would how long it takes to grow a crop of rice?

I have been cutting back brambles and found loads of ladybirds over the past few weeks.I've also seen marigolds still in flower, normally the frost would have seen them off,but we haven't really had any.

Marne · 29/01/2014 21:41

I have seen ladybirds too and my strawberry plants have produced a couple of strawberries ( only green ones but still rather odd for this time of year ), our grass hasn't stopped growing, looks like a jungle out there.

Is there any sign of any snow for next week or will it stay warm and wet?

GloriaSmud · 29/01/2014 22:13

I've haven't seen any ladybirds but have seen 2 bumble bees, first one was on the 2nd January!

As for the garden, it's in a real state. I would cut the grass but it's too muddy. And as for my allotment, I think some onions that I planted in the autumn have rotted in the ground ~ growing rice did cross my mind when I saw the state of it last Sunday!

When it comes to storm names, I've been doing some research on weather Gods on Wikipedia. I quite liked the idea of a 'Storm Horagalles' ~ 'God of sky, thunder and lightning, the rainbow, weather, oceans, and lakes.' Thought it summed up just about everything that's happened weather~wise the last few months.
