So r4 reports the environment agency as saying for this afternoon right down the east coast to Essex. Just eating my breakfast so will dig out the relevant info in a little bit.

Holycowiloveyoureyes · 05/12/2013 21:48

fizzly have a look on twitter, it s been great for updating tonight #hull #humberflood.

DownstairsMixUp · 05/12/2013 21:50

Nothing happening coastal kent yet but high tide isnt due till 1am!! Will update tomorrow

alcibiades · 05/12/2013 21:52

Thanks, Brown Sauce. Although I know quite a bit about tsunamis, in terms of the mechanisms, I was struggling to understand the reasons for the difference between the before and after measurements of the sea levels. By the sounds of it (unless I've got it wrong) it's a matter of an extreme event overlying normal variable events.

I do admire and appreciate the people who can understand the complexities involved. A lot of lives will have been saved by the forecasting of this situation.

BuntyPenfold · 05/12/2013 21:55

Is anyone in Boston ?

TidalSurgeWorries · 05/12/2013 21:55

meditrina apparently there were troops in Gorleston earlier.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 05/12/2013 22:00

I'm off to bed. I hope those of you in vulnerable areas stay safe and can get some rest.

meditrina · 05/12/2013 22:09

Thanks TidalSurgeWorries - probably the news channels picking it up late.

High tide in Lowestoft is due 23:00 (according to BBC) so still peaking for Norfolk. Hope there are signs of abatement soon.

BrownSauceSandwich · 05/12/2013 22:13

You're so right, Alcibiades. In fact, it was in the wake of the 1953 surge that the national tide gauge network was set up, precisely to help forecast this kind of event. You might be interested in a recent project to digitise the historical records from those gauges, and make them available to science and the public:

I'm in kent and they have evacuated people closer to the river. High tide at 11 pm. Gulp.

FuckedOFFrightnow · 05/12/2013 22:20

The Cleethorpes, Grimsby flood has been, to quote many others 'a bit of a non-event'. We are so lucky. Lets hope it stays that way. I am told the tides will be high again for at least one more night...

OnMyHand · 05/12/2013 22:27

I'm hoping for a non event too. I would rather they over reacted than under reacted any day.

Your right FuckedOFFrightnow it's the next tides we have to watch.

Showy · 05/12/2013 22:51

"BBC Radio Norfolk reporter Andrew Turner says Hemsby lifeboat station has fallen into the sea"

DH confirms that hundreds of people are out "watching" defences as they're breached. Foolish behaviour.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 05/12/2013 22:58

We are on the Tendring Peninsula, Essex.
Thankfully we are on a plateau. Jaywick, St Osyth and parts of Clacton have been evacuated apparently, my friend lives on Mersea Island, parts of that are under threat too. Although we are ok, its quite scary. Some of the DCs friends have had to leave their homes.
I watched a documentary a while ago about the flooding 60 years ago. It was awful, people died in their homes, they were totally unprepared. Sad
Theyre just saying on the local news that some of the floods are even higher than predicted.
What a winter for weather already! Whats next? Blizzards?

Flangeofmingetown · 05/12/2013 23:04

I saw soldiers here in Spalding tonight around 8.30pm about five mins away from my house. Lots of air activity too. Quiet so far.

TheWildOnes · 05/12/2013 23:31

Im in Lowestoft, things are really bad here, the fact that our road is on a tiny hill has saved us. All roads around us have been evacuated and water has reached the bottom of the road.

nemno · 05/12/2013 23:38

That doesn't sound good Wild, it may have peaked there going by this

KatyMac · 05/12/2013 23:40

I'm just outside Caister & have driven here from Norwich about 10 minutes ago

We have no storm or wind but if the environment agency's map is right by tomorrow we will be on an island!!

I wonder if we will be open tomorrow (a nursery) as the team may not be able to get to work & even if they can, I don't know if the parents will live & work on the new 'island'

My dad drove round all the local bridges this afternoon & her reckoned the broads and rivers were still really very low water

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 05/12/2013 23:43

Showy Shock That's awful.

whatshallwedo · 05/12/2013 23:44

Katymac I've read tonight that a cafe on Caister seafront has gone along with Hemsby lifeboat station and two bungalows nearby. It is so sad Sad

tammytwigg · 05/12/2013 23:44

Hi im in Boston luckily on the outskirts so very lucky tonight ,the town centre was flooded and some surrounding areas ,another high tide at 8.oclock in morning ,very scary looking at some of the Facebook photos .work at dps in town, dont know what damage yet , all roads been closed just starting to subside now wondering what Tommorrow will bring ,my Ds school flooded so no school for him not sure about dd yet .

TheOnlySevenSleighbells · 05/12/2013 23:52

thewildones where in Lowestoft are you? I'm in Southwold, I read on fb a couple of hours ago the bascule bridge is closed as well as the bridge in OB, I imagine that means most of Central Lowestoft is under water.

KatyMac · 05/12/2013 23:52

It's a bit scary & a bit unreal as everything looks 'normal' here, 4 miles (or so) away

TidalSurgeWorries · 05/12/2013 23:58

Water levels at Haven bridge were very high, Haven bridge is closed now.

Tides should be going down soon I think. two more tides to go.

My Mum is ok and has gone to bed now. Her house is ok so far she's not checked outside though.

GY beach looks more like a harbour. Some of Gorleston looks bad.
