So r4 reports the environment agency as saying for this afternoon right down the east coast to Essex. Just eating my breakfast so will dig out the relevant info in a little bit.

have friends in hamburg. they have been evacuated from the office building in the harbour as that area is designated to be opened to relieve the pressure from the dykes. that means a whole island with large warehouses/offices will probably be flooded.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 05/12/2013 19:58

gulf news takes a broader look at the impact of the storm across europe.

Thanks ProfYaffle. Oh crap, that doesn't look good.

Thanks Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme will do.

JKSLtd · 05/12/2013 20:06

Thanks as usual Kitten for all your work.

I'm in south essex and so far we're on an alert but we're in an area that did flood in 53 (not our exact street but the general area) - should we be worried?

The end of our garden is orange on the EA map.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 05/12/2013 20:08

JKS, I would prepare. Hopefully it will be wasted energy, but from what I've seen so far it does need to be taken seriously.

First bit of good news, it seems the defences at Hull have held for this tide :) (a bit close 10-20cm from the top)

Is anyone watching BBC News 24 and the idiots running about on the seafront in Cleethorpes on the quayside behind the reporter? Why don't the police close the road to pedestrians? There are waves already coming over. Looks like teenagers arsing around. Stupid.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 05/12/2013 20:18

I think cleethorpes is over the worst for this tidal cycle?

OP posts:
meditrina · 05/12/2013 20:19

There is some flooding in east Hull - local paper here

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 05/12/2013 20:21

Fizzly
Seems to bring out the prat in people
Coast guards had to rescue people off Cromer pier. How dare they make it so other people have to risk their lives rescuing them. It want as if they couldn't have known

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 05/12/2013 20:22

Its not great for them but it could have been a lot worse.

OP posts:
OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 05/12/2013 20:23

The fishing people at Cromer were utter idiots.
Lifeboats cant get out as they cant get to their boats according to radio norfolk.

ParsingFancy · 05/12/2013 20:26

That's jolly interesting link to real time tidal gauge info, OYBBK. All locations I've checked show a dip below the predicted low tide level before the rapid rise above predicted high tide level.

So an anti-surge before the surge in most places?

marssparklesdownonme · 05/12/2013 20:29

TIDAL SURGE Radio Norfolk are running constant reports until 1 am tonight too if that helps. I couldn't believe the lifeboat station at Cromer had been blocked when I heard it on Radio Norfolk .They are now reporting people stealing sandbags from other people homes!!!

ParsingFancy · 05/12/2013 20:29

Ah, I actually mean an anti-surge in most East Coast places. Which actually fits with what BrownSauce was saying.

meditrina · 05/12/2013 20:31

I thought the life boat at Cromer launched from the end of the pier?

Holycowiloveyoureyes · 05/12/2013 20:32

Hull City centre now flooded :(

marssparklesdownonme · 05/12/2013 20:32

Yes it does meditrina

LostInWales · 05/12/2013 20:33

Chesty my dad went down to the harbour in Brid and the water was well up behind the ships chandlers and Rags resaurant Shock I saw a picture where the water is lapping over in front of the fish processing bit. I can't comprehend that much extra water.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 05/12/2013 20:33

No idea meditrina, Just repeating what bbc Norfolk said :) I've had to turn it off now as my head was exploding trying to look at tidal gauges, whilst listening to the radio and watching the news.

Taking a masterchef break!

TidalSurgeWorries · 05/12/2013 20:33

marssparklesdownonme Thanks. I know Mum is listening to radio Norfolk, I may look for their website, don't want to put on the radio, my youngest will worry if he hears it, he remembers being evacuated at 2am last time!

I need Wine need to relax as I can't really do anything.

alcibiades · 05/12/2013 20:36

Is an anti-surge similar to what happens in a tsunami? The bulge initially draws water away from the coast?

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 05/12/2013 20:40

I need to do some reading on that alci.

Lighthousekeeping · 05/12/2013 20:41

My family in Hull are reporting high winds only. They are North Hull.
