here primarily for gales/severe gales (gusts up to 80mph) but also for snow on thurs and friday. In parts of Scotland, esp the NE the combination could lead too blizzard conditions and severe wind chill. Take care.

Have you and way of making sure it falls safely, Ralph?

I'm watching reports of trees and chimneys coming down all over our area. If the power does go, I may need ot use the camping stove to make tea because we're not going to be able to get to anywhere else to find food. Except maybe KFC, which is revolting!

LemonBreeland · 05/12/2013 11:33

I am in the Scottish borders and the drive to work and school was pretty terrifying this morning. The radio is full of roads closed blocked by trees.

Police have also issued a level 4 no travel warning. Not until after 9 am when everyone had already travelled though. Confused

It was horrendous here until about 5 minutes ago. It went from really dar, with howling gales and sleet/rain to barely any wind and some blue sky visible. It is very strange.

nicky2512 · 05/12/2013 11:35

Horrible here in N Ireland too. Was v bad through the night but hopefully seems to be calming a bit now. Supposed to snow though. My kids are singing at a Christmas tree lights thing tonight! Thankfully just had some work done on our roof, still couldn't sleep though!

ClaimedByMe · 05/12/2013 11:37

I'm in Dundee...suns out now

HesterShaw · 05/12/2013 11:37

That's what they call it Stealth.

I don't know what the people who faced the 18th C tsunami in the Bristol Channel would have to say about it though.

Have been reading a lot about the flood's of 53. While we could easily have the same weather again, the effects couldn't be the same. So many of the people who died were living in prefabs, there was no coordinated rescue, there was no warning, and many of the people died of exposure, not drowning. And many of the sea defences hadn't even been repaired after the war. It was a chapter of accidents.

It's a bit like comparing the Lynmouth floods with Boscastle and, which on paper were very similar, with one being so much more tragic than the other.

Hope I'm right anyway :)

littleredsquirrel · 05/12/2013 11:40

Fantastic. We no longer have a roof on our covered terrace (Notts) Xmas Sad

HesterShaw · 05/12/2013 11:41

Sorry, it was 1607, not 18th C.

Sorry about your roof, squirrel :(

oricella · 05/12/2013 11:43

Calming down a little now in the highlands (it's all relative), but temperature is dropping and plenty of hail showers slowly turning to snow. Power cuts, schools closed - power only just come back on; grateful for the woodburner and the camping stove. Not much fun

sewingandcakes · 05/12/2013 11:47

Wind and rain have really picked up in Rossendale, and I 'm very concerned about the anti fracking protesters in Barton Moss, Salford, as they are camping there.

HesterShaw · 05/12/2013 11:48

Little bit breezy here (42mph recorded) but that happens a lot. Cold though.

People are starting to worry on other threads about east coast flooding. One lady's elderly mother is on her own and is frightened. This is horrible, poor thing :(

ouryve · 05/12/2013 11:52

We're a few miles inland, but my parents live on the coast. Their main worry is how much more of the cliffs in their village will be gone after today. We're all banking on it taking about 30 years to reach their house!

littleredsquirrel · 05/12/2013 11:54

I have moved from the office (separate building in the garden) to the house. We have three trees which are due to be taken down in a few weeks and I'm a little concerned that this wind might take them down for us!

Terrace roof needed replacing really but now we have no choice about the matter Xmas Sad

littleredsquirrel · 05/12/2013 11:56

Luckily we have a lot of land around us so the roof isn't likely to damage anyone else's property

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 05/12/2013 11:56

Hester - which thread? Wondering if we can help

HesterShaw · 05/12/2013 12:01

Someone from the Environment Agency has gone on and been Very Sensible :)

HesterShaw · 05/12/2013 12:04

There does seem to be a little bit of confusion about how a potential flood will occur though e.g. she had never heard of a flood there before. here

She's had some advice, though hasn't said where she is.

StealthPolarBear · 05/12/2013 12:09

Oh no squirrel!

littleredsquirrel · 05/12/2013 12:19

AAagh now have two shutters blown off the house too!

FFS we're in nottinghamshire I didn't expect this!

sewingandcakes · 05/12/2013 12:23

Squirrel I hope it passes soon for you! We've lost some roof tiles here but nothing as severe as you.

StealthPolarBear · 05/12/2013 12:25

settling down here

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 05/12/2013 12:26

ah yes - looking at the radar there is a squall line developing. Across the country at the level of manchester currently.

mankyscotslass · 05/12/2013 12:28

Its wild here now, Lots of debris from trees on the road.

The windows are creaking.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 05/12/2013 12:30

Perihelion · 05/12/2013 12:32

Sunshine now and a dusting of snow on the Ochills. Was down by the water for my dogwalk and even though it was about 4 hours before high tide, it looked almost like a high tide already.
