here primarily for gales/severe gales (gusts up to 80mph) but also for snow on thurs and friday. In parts of Scotland, esp the NE the combination could lead too blizzard conditions and severe wind chill. Take care.

Tell a lie, just watched a plane going into land, but really slowly.......

Perihelion · 05/12/2013 09:36

82mph gust recorded in Edinburgh and the wind's now WNW. Think this is the peak.

TheGirlFromIpanema · 05/12/2013 09:39

No planes landing at Leeds at all this morning, I assume they've all gone somewhere less windy.

Wineandchoccy · 05/12/2013 09:41

Awful in East Lancashire, wind howling down the chimney and tree opposite bending over in the wind. DH just been to the shop and said it was hard to get his breath.

I've got to see a customer in Trafford later but don't think I will be using the barton bridge as it's windy at the best of times.

Stay safe and warm everyone Xmas Smile

GloriaSmud · 05/12/2013 09:46

Rain showing up here ~ I think the organised line of rain moving south is called a 'squall line.' We had one go through a week or two back, the wind got up suddenly, rain was torrential and the temperature dropped by something like 3C in 20 minutes.

Here in Leicester, the wind's got up in the last 90 mins and it's 7C.

I saw on the news, whilst they were reporting all train services in Scotland cancelled, that one line was closed earlier because of a trampoline on the line.

goodasitgets · 05/12/2013 09:53

Lancashire here. Have to go on M6/61 later and not looking forward to it

CosyTeaBags · 05/12/2013 09:58

I'm in North Wales - very windy here, has been since the small hours. A few branches down on the roads.

I'm supposed to drive to Chester this afternoon - but I don't have to. Shall I cancel?

sewingandcakes · 05/12/2013 10:05

Rossendale here, and walking the kids to school was interesting! Very windy and rainy, no damage so far, but I'm staying in until I pick up the kids.

MagicsInTheMakeUp · 05/12/2013 10:10

Hello, I live on the east coast and have just had a recorded message on my land line warning us of the bad weather ahead. It said to take action now to prepare for flooding expected tonight. I'm a bit concerned as we Haven't lived here long so not really sure what I should be doing... Confused

unlucky83 · 05/12/2013 10:10

wanking I have an attractive Hmm brick pile - if I know its going to be windy I stick a brick or 2 on top of each of the wheelies...especially if out for collection so more exposed...our binmen will lift brick off, empty and replace if squally - but then maybe they are just nice!

ouryve · 05/12/2013 10:14

Eeeeuuuuuurgh!!!!! Horizontal hail. And it's bloody loud. If this doesn't kill our power supply, then we should be safe (rural-ish co durham)

Fences, bins, greenhouses etc down all over the village, this morning. DH said the A19 towards teeside was littered with debris and reports say the same for the A1M western bypass.

I'd say to anyone thinking of travelling up here, don't.

Fuctifano · 05/12/2013 10:17

Very severe conditions in Central Scotland, seriously scary journey to and home from work (was closed - no power) to find my shed in bits in the garden and my neighbour's fence gone. Trees are coming down everywhere and debris all over the roads.

OYMLK and local weather guru
www.facebook.com/windywilson.weather.roads have been right yet again.

Now what about this snow tomorrow?

meditrina · 05/12/2013 10:17

According to SKY, Scottish police are advising not to go out in high sided vehicles at all, and if already on the road, to pull over until winds drop (lunchtime - ish)

meditrina · 05/12/2013 10:20

Oh, fuck. First report of a death, and it's an HGV driver whose vehicle was blown over in West Lothian. Sad

(Perhaps that's what led to the high-sides vehicles warning?)

unlucky83 · 05/12/2013 10:22

Calmer here now (Tay coast) ...walking DD2 to school one of the boxes holding the traffic lights on the pedestrian crossing was swinging backwards and forwards like a pendulum - looking at it seems as if someone has forgotten to attach it at the bottom! (rest were ok) and one tree in the school grounds has a middle sized branch snapped off and hanging from it -wouldn't imagine the children would be playing out there today anyway

Anyone else notice - bird's nests are amazing - trees bending over sideways earlier but they still have nests in them!

Perihelion · 05/12/2013 10:23

Magic check with Environment Agency ( England ) or SEPA ( Scotland ) websites. It's regarding a storm surge in the North Sea, combining with high tide later today. Time depends on where you are. Flood risk if you're costal, and/or at a low level and also near some rivers. Also to be aware that some roads may flood too.I think they are expecting high tide to be up to 1.8m higher than usual. Best advise would be to move inland and to higher ground before hand. Also worth speaking to neighbours about where local to you is known for flooding, although today's storm event is quite rare so more extensive flooding.

WankingInAWinterWonderland · 05/12/2013 10:25

It's calmed down a lot now, still cold and wet but not as windy in Edinburgh

ouryve · 05/12/2013 10:28

Tees flyover now closed to high sided vehicles.

Magics - worth checking the environmental agency website. there's a flood preparation page, there. They give lots of updates on Twitter, too, so worth refreshing their page. You don't need a twitter ccount to see their tweets. twitter.com/EnvAgencyYNE

StiffGandT · 05/12/2013 10:29

Edinburgh here - seems to be calming down now. Winds at more normal strengths and rain now vertical instead of horizontal.

StealthPolarBear · 05/12/2013 10:29

Dds nursery now closed

MagicsInTheMakeUp · 05/12/2013 10:30

Perihelion Thanks for the info. I shall get on with that now. Take care everybody!

CosyTeaBags · 05/12/2013 10:32

Getting worse here in N Wales. Some really strong gusts. Not much in the way of rain though.

MagicsInTheMakeUp · 05/12/2013 10:33

Thanks ouryve that will come in very handy
