I'm keeping a pretty close eye on developments for Monday. some of the models (in particular gfs) are showing a deep low developing over England, with the majority of the gfs runs taking the worst of the wind over the south.

Massive if. But if the weather were to pan out as those models are suggesting it would be a damaging storm, especially given the trees still being in leaf. I'd keep an eye on the met office early warnings page and if they start warning about it then it would be a good weekend to tidy the garden before you lose your stuff Wink

I'll update as things become clearer.

mum2many - at the moment its impossible to say for certain. currently it does look pretty likely London will be hit. if it is, all of it will be.

southernwind, you'll need to play it by ear I'm afraid. hopefully the worst will be through by the time you are due to set off so you will know what sort of disruption has been caused.

starfish - I think the worst of it will be over in a 6 hour period (with the very worst being shorter than that).

Sorry-have not read the whole thread but I`ve heard the gales are coming late afternoon -evening on Sunday 27th!!

edam · 25/10/2013 22:23

ooh, this may be a hostage to fortune but I do love a good storm. With the wind whistling and crying... (as long as I'm toasty warm inside and no trees fall down).

The 1988 (?) hurricane, the one Michael Fish said woudn't happen, was quite bizarre. Was in student digs and was woken by the bedroom window being torn open. My room-mate and I spent what seemed like hours fighting the wind to get the window shut again before the glass shattered.

Then we realised the door had slammed shut - the one with the broken handle that we now couldn't open. And having woken up in the middle of the night, we both really needed to pee. Grin Have never worked a pair of tweezers so assiduously.

Had no idea that it had been an actual hurricane until the next morning. Our landlady had the radio on, gleefully reporting every new item of disaster on the news. Then we left the house to get a bus to university and were astonished at the devastation right on our doorstep. We were clambering over trees that had come down right across the road. The idea that buses might be running had been stupidly optimistic.

Nat38 · 25/10/2013 22:23

StarfishOrange hope everything is ok for your son!!

scripsi · 25/10/2013 22:24

We have some very windy weather here already in Herts. I am hoping the weather will miss us (I shall be cycling around on Monday).

thanks! It's very windy here tonight hoping it calms down

OhYouWickedWickedWitch · 25/10/2013 22:31

s'alright I'm still really OYBBK - I didnt even make the short list!

the 87 storm had about 4 hours of 80mph gusts being recorded in the SE as far as I know.

Nat - those are the pre storm gales - from the low pressure to the north of the UK.

Thank you OYWWW Thanks

I remember the January storm of 1990 and I got stranded in Exeter as the trains stopped running. I got the train home the following morning and all i could see was flood water and fallen down trees.

I am supposed to be driving from Devon to Cornwall on Monday morning for a holiday ...

OhYouWickedWickedWitch · 25/10/2013 22:36

latest eCMWF has the storm slap over the middle of the uk at midday - so slower than GFS. So clearly the timing is still up in the air (so to speak). Still looks nasty.

We've got a 9am appointment to register DD's birth on Monday. We're on the outskirts of N London, I wonder whether we'll end up driving or walking there...

RevoltInParadise · 25/10/2013 22:51

Please can you give us a landmark on that aptly called crochet pattern you posted earlier? I can see the hurricane force but have no idea where that actually is!thanks!

Thesouthernwindisblowing · 25/10/2013 22:52

Thanks, OYWWW!

ZombieMonkeyButler · 25/10/2013 22:53

DH & all 3 DCs are in a caravan in East Devon until Tuesday. I hope the roof doesn't get blown off! Sad

It's a static so unlikely to actually blow over I would think?

OhYouWickedWickedWitch · 25/10/2013 22:57

its just along the south coast of the UK Revolt.

Zombiemonkey - They should be ok :). They should keep an eye on the met office warnings though.

Ok bit worried - looking at actual wind speeds over uk on a map I saw it shows worst area is over Hampshire. Please tell me that isn't where the hurricane bit on the (crochet pattern - that was a brill post!!!!!) map was?.

classifiedinformation · 25/10/2013 23:03

Going to Devon (from Oxfordshire) tomorrow until Wed to see DP's family. I'm getting rather worried about it. I don't want to cancel as DP and DS are really looking forward to it.

Not sure what to do!
