Hanging off a rock in the inner hebrides and today we have gales and hail. Our poor lambs are huddled in corners, the grass won't grow, cows and sheep in misery and our poor piglets haven't even been outdoors yet!
Never mind that the heating is still on, we still need to light the fire most days as it feels so 'wintery'!
I know farmers are known for complaining about the weather but surely it must warm up sometime?

We just had more thunder and lightning! Heavy rain now too

digerd · 16/05/2013 21:45

Yes, my german MIL always said that in german of course. When the Oak is in leaf before the Ash, that means a wet summer. Not again! Angry.

It was lovely this morning in the sun. Cooler when the clouds arrived, but really nice .

Bah. I misread the weather lore. So what's the difference between a soak and a splash? Both sound bloody wet.

digerd · 17/05/2013 07:20

I think it means the same thing.

Yesterday at 6.30pm on my sunny dog walk, it was all in the shade and dull. It was the oak trees and others full in leaf and the sun infront of me couldn't get through the canopy of leaves [sad Confused.
So fed up with that too now. Also the ground elder was blooming and making the path too narrow. < grumpy face>.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/05/2013 07:43

Aj, Sunday still looking the best day to go :)

YouCantTeuchThis · 17/05/2013 08:29

I was so depressed about the weather that I forgot to come back Wink

Well, yesterday we had a lovely day - not hugely warm but enough to have a cuppa in the garden in the afternoon (out of the wind). I totally get the impact on attitude and mood - this whole island is a happier place when the sun peeks out Grin

Animals are all now outside and off to summer grazings (if they can find some!) apart from the piggies.

Looks like it might turn again for the weekend though, so I am enjoying the little bit of warmth whilst we can!

Oh, and the rooks have nested very high in the trees in the village which everyone says is a sign of a good summer...

Although we had a very good summer last year whilst everyone else was in misery with rain Grin

Thanks Kitten - I shall pass it on (and get my driving shoes ready!!!).

HesterShaw · 17/05/2013 11:10

The weather has been totally the wrong way round the last couple of summers. We have been getting the wind and rain and the north of Scotland is getting Scandinavia-type summers!

Sunday was looking very awful here and the eye of the low has moved away a bit and lo and behold, it's looking lovely.

Blu · 17/05/2013 11:15

Are we in for another crap summer if the Jet Stream stays where it is? And presumably it can't just move suddenly - it's miles and miles of ocean water, isn't it?

Earthymama · 17/05/2013 11:18

I agree about the effect of the weather.
I am so stressed and unhappy, I feel as though life is one never ending trudge and drudge through cold winds and driving rain.

I was SO happy when we had the lovely weather at Bank Holiday. I spent all my time outside working on my allotment and was in heaven.

It is very hard as I am Pagan and aim to be in tune with the Seasons and turning of the Earth, when, at the moment, I feel a real disconnection.

There are no Seasons.Hmm

Maybe I should start a Sun-Worshipping Cult; I am sure young children think it is a Myth anyway! Blush

AnAirOfHope · 17/05/2013 11:21

South yorks and its raining, good job i didnt get a paddleing pool for the kids yet.

I really need some good drying weather i have loads of laundry to do :(

HesterShaw · 17/05/2013 11:33

Jet stream, Blu not Gulf Stream! The jet stream is in the sky. It can move any time it sees fit. Wanker.

HesterShaw · 17/05/2013 11:34

Sorry to be clear, it's the jet stream which is the Wanker :)

Blu · 17/05/2013 11:59
Grin

Oh, yes, I am being completely dim. I think it is because I vaguely remember that the jet stream has moved south because of extra melt water in the sea due to the ice cap melting? Does that affect the Gulf stream as well?

I have a grade A Geography A level too Blush

digerd · 17/05/2013 12:01

S.Herts
Today has been chilly and cloudy and the heating is still on - very low and not warming me up. Despite my sitting room not getting lower that 19 last night. I have it set for 21.

Had 2 young men at 8.45 looking at my pond pump and it's apprently the electrics that are not working.
Having an older man coming about 2pm to look at it .

Do hope the rooks have got it right even if the trees haven't

digerd · 17/05/2013 12:03

Grin.

digerd · 17/05/2013 14:55

Just had my 2nd man visit my pond and it was really cold out there.

It was so nice yesterday as well Confused

HesterShaw · 17/05/2013 20:09

I think the worst case scenario with melting Greenland ice sheet and the Gulf stream is it stopping altogether, or at least slowing down considerably. You know Newfoundland? That could be us.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/05/2013 00:35

Blu, it's more complicated than that. The jet stream is high up in the atmosphere. One of the drivers of it is the temp difference between the North Pole and the equator, which is also related in a way to the pressure difference between the two regions. It is that pressure difference which is much weaker than usual (and even flips at times) which is creating the rather weak and wobbly jet stream, causing it to meander in great loops. Our weather seems to be depending on whereabouts a loop gets stuck.

The record breaking sea ice melt is a massive concern in all of this.

digerd · 18/05/2013 07:18

Your description of the jet stream - weak, wobbly and meandering sounds like me Grin. My excuse is the ageing process. About time the jetstream got its act together and puts up a fight against these demons that are determined to make us miserable Hmm

And your word 'loop' applies to me too as going a bit loopy over the weatherGrin

HesterShaw · 18/05/2013 10:42

Oh dear OYBBK. That doesn't bode well for future summers at all :(

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/05/2013 10:51

Lol digerd!

Hester, if we get stuck on the right side of a loop then it could give us a really nice summer! Last winter (2011-2012) was very dry. If that had happened a few months later, it could have been quite nice really!

HesterShaw · 18/05/2013 10:53

But it never does!! The jet stream decides to pay us lucky people in the south a special visit in April and stays until about October, leaving those lucky bastards in Shetland with a lovely summer. Where's the justice???? Shetland is SUPPOSED to have rubbish summers!

I guess you're right and I should cheer up. After all it's a lovely day Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/05/2013 11:05

Lol!! It does at least concentrate the mind on any sunshine we do get! I get very appreciative of it.

I might get a t shirt made up with something like ' the jet stream is a bastard'. But with cleverer words if I can think of any!
