we had thunder and lightening with the snow 2 weeks ago - i thought i was going loopy.

dreading round two...

wineonafridaynight · 15/12/2010 01:08

I''ve been monitoring this thread obsessively today! Grin

Please could you tell me how you think I will fair weather wise trying to get down the M1 from the south of the midlands (border of northants/warks) to south London on Sunday? Thanks!

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 15/12/2010 07:39

morning all.

Ok - thursday:
I can't believe how quickly the latest fax charts shows the cold front going through - it is at the northern end of Scotland at midnight and across Wales by lunch time. I've still not got a clue whether it will be an exciting one with thunder and lightning or a less exciting affair. Nevertheless it is going to happen and behind it it will by jolly cold.

friday: looking at gfs. all down the west shows a risk for a serious amount of snow. This risk gradually extends more eastwards. I think the south coast may see some too.

Saturday morning sees a serious snow risk to the south and midlands, but near the south coast you may end up with sleet or rain for a bit - the temps are a bit marginal as there is a warm sector showing in.

Sunday - I'm not sure about. Looks a bit warm by the south coast and SW I think the west still shows the greatest snow risk but snow ould pop up just about anywhere.

into next week briefly. Looks very cold for most - perhaps not quite so near the south coast for a time (might even be too warm for snow down there) and Christmas itself - at the moment (and remember this is a loooong way off in forecasting land) GFS shows mild in the SW and cold but marginal temps for many others - loads of precipitation but probably rain. Wouldn't take much to make it snow.

ledodgy · 15/12/2010 07:43

morning OYBK do you reckon Liverpool will get proper snow this time?

PartridgeinaRustyBearTree · 15/12/2010 07:48

You are doing a great public service, Kitten! Can I add one more question?

We have to pick up DD from university in Exeter this weekend - we're in Berkshire, a bit south of the M4. Do you think it would it be better to leave it till Sunday in the hope that the snow will have melted - or is it likely to have just turned to ice by then?

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 15/12/2010 08:19

LeDodgy - I think Liverpool is in a pretty good position for snow. (though gfs seems to put a bit of shield around it Hmm )

Rusty - it won't have melted. Perhaps it will give the gritters a chance to sort things out a bit though. You look to be in rather a firing line for Saturday's snow.

aristomache · 15/12/2010 08:43

How will I do getting from west cumbria to Manchester city centre on friday? Xmas Smile

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 15/12/2010 08:50

not quite sure aristomache - gfs doesnt show the showers penetrating very far around there - but with the direction and strength of the wind they may penetrate much further - the 'cheshire gap' effect which shows very nicely in the met office early warnings

jinglejet · 15/12/2010 09:09

Great info snowyXmas Smile

Any further thoughts on travel from north east england to london on Monday, returning Wednesday?

geordieminx · 15/12/2010 09:33

kitten the bbc (ha) have pushed back the snow that was expected in Scotland on Thursday to Sat/Sun?

Have they got it right for once or do you reckon it will still be here Thurs/Friday?

Sorry to bug you, just uber paranoid about getting stranded again Sad

wineonafridaynight · 15/12/2010 09:54

Thanks very much Snowy!:)

GeorgeWHollyBush · 15/12/2010 10:17

I come to this thread before the Met Office site now.

Kitten I'm supposed to be travelling to London from the IOW on Saturday by train, wondering whether to cancel now. Promised DS a Christmas trip to see the lights and he's VERY excited, I don't mind getting stuck up there for a while but my parents are having the girls and they might Grin. Gah what to do!

aristomache · 15/12/2010 11:05

Thanks for the info snowy!

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 15/12/2010 11:25

you are welcome all :)

I don't think that people should really expect much from the front itself, just what is coming behind it.
geordiemix - I think the bbc are wrong. there maybe some areas in Scotland that don't really get any - but all round the edges and the north there looks to be plenty.

GWB - it could be tricky unless the low moves a bit further north (then it would be stupid sleety rain

jinglejet - it might actually be quite a dry journey for you with the winds progged to be NWesterlies.

bloody cold temps coming up Shock I don't know if gfs is overcooking the temps but it shows a max temp of -7 for midday Sunday around Yorkshire then a low of -19 that night with widespread lows of -6 to -10C

GoodKingSlubbersArseFellOut · 15/12/2010 11:28

I am glued to this thread. It's all very exciting and slightly tense and festive all rolled into one.

Kitten you are a star. btw how is your hand? was it your hand that you burnt in the summer?

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 15/12/2010 11:44

Slubber - it is great :) healed very well. I'm getting some arthritis symptoms in that hand now (I have inflammatory arthritis) but considering what happened its pretty amazing!

NoahAndTheWhale · 15/12/2010 11:48

It was very cold here (York) a couple of weeks ago. -12 in the day or something daft like that. I was in London though Grin

grumpykat25 · 15/12/2010 11:51

Hi Snowy, I'm a total weather nerd, so I'm LOVING your thread, and now my dad calls me for your weather updates too! Much more reliable and personal that the met office IMO.
A quick weather request. We're in Birmingham and hubby has to drive down to Gloucester Thurs and Fri for work. Do you think the weather is on our side, or should I send him with blankets and enough food for a week in case he gets stuck on the M5?
Thanks for you thoughts!

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 15/12/2010 11:58
Blush

grumpykat I think his main risks are ice on thursday - a very real risk and then snow could be a real problem on Friday. What fun your dh will have! He needs something to wee into and something to read too.

grumpykat25 · 15/12/2010 12:08

Oh bugger Xmas Confused. I will regale him with your worrying forecast. Thanks ever so much.

SantaClausImWorthIt · 15/12/2010 12:22

I love your thread and I think I'm a little bit in love with you too, OYBBK!

So. We're due to drive down from SW London to Cardiff on Saturday. What are our chances?

Should we try to go on Friday afternoon? Could go after DS2 finishes school - or should we leave it till late Saturday/Sunday?

And will we get back OK on Monday?! I don't mind, but DS2 has to be back at school on Tuesday for a mock GCSE.

lal123 · 15/12/2010 12:35

lal123 · 15/12/2010 12:37

midnight - MET aren't forecasting really cold weather for Glasgow - low of -3 tomorrow night
