General chat thread for puree lovers!

Neenztwinz · 25/11/2008 13:39

Before I started weaning my twins, I read about BLW and thought it looked like an amazing idea.

When I tried it I found my darling LOs didn't pick up a single thing never mind get it into the mouths.

So now I puree food and spoonfeed them and they are eating massive amounts and loving it - and sleeping all night!

So I thought I'd start a thread for others who are doing the same as me - we can swap ideas for meals and say what works for us (ie what makes them sleep ).

I gave my twins four plums plus ebm and baby rice for breakfast and they have had a big bowl of sweet potato, haricot beans and brocolli for lunch. More of the same for tea (plus maybe some swede and parsnip). They are 6.5mths old.

What did yours eat today?

Thank you pud, bit worried about "baby stock"

MadameCheese · 11/12/2008 11:31

what about chickpeas?

giantsantasacks · 11/12/2008 13:05

4 mins? wow i thought lentils had to be brought up to the boil then simmered for 15...

giantsantasacks · 11/12/2008 13:07

in fact i leave mine in for waaay longer than 15 even...ahem maybe i'm doing it wrong

DreamingOfMincePiesInAustria · 11/12/2008 13:14

Hi everyone ( especially all those from June 08 group)

ds3 is nearly 6 months and we're in the 2nd week of purees.

So far we've had success with baby rice, apple pear, banana, sweet pot, butternut squash and carrot. What I want to know is, at this stage how much did your lo eat? We started with just lunch and now he's having breakfast (baby rice and pear today) and he's just wolfed down butternut squash(about 5 ice cubes worth) for lunch.Still bfeeding as much as ever at the moment and still waking in the night, even though he used to sleep through. Also when did you start giving yours water?

Seems like an eternity since I did this with ds2.

MadameCheese · 11/12/2008 14:47

Blimey Dreaming, you're doing very well. Just go with what he wants . My DS took ages to get going properly, they're all different. I started giving water with lunch and supper from the start.

Has anyone got any other fruit ideas apart from apple (likes), pear (loves) or banana (won't go near)?

DreamingOfMincePiesInAustria · 11/12/2008 15:02

Thanks Madame - papaya, avocado (ds2 used to love this but it goes black v quickly)

bitofasnowqueen · 11/12/2008 16:45

I had a really nice roasted tomato and chickpea soup the other day whoever was asking about chickpeas - am sure that would make a nice puree. We also often have sausages with a tomato and chickpea sauce which I guess could be adapted for a 8 month old?

On the subject of baby stock... DH used some baby stock cubes in some soup this week and it tasted bloody awful. Bland as could be. Had to put a ton of salt and pepper in before it was edible (and I never ever add salt at the table). I know this is a puree thread, but with those of you with older DC's - once they started eating your food did you use baby stock cubes in soups etc or did you just stick with the regular ones?

TettyLouBar · 11/12/2008 16:51

Hi all,
Just had a brief flick though the thread - apologies if this has been covered recently - Does anybody else just do 8am-12pm-4pm-bedtime for their routine.
I've started weaning DD 26wks about 4 weeks ago and she seems quite happy to wolf down 7oz milk and then have 2 cubes of veg/fruit puree / porridge. I feel bad for not spacing the meals and milk out as no-one else seems to.

I was planning on increasing the puree portions and slowly reducing the milk feeds so that she gradually swaps to more solids. Is this wrong? should I be giving milk inbetween meals then?

giantsantasacks · 11/12/2008 18:16

snowqueen - I make my own simple stock with water, white wine (if theres any), herbs and leeks and carrots...

those baby stock cubes have appeared in the 5 years since my ds and I think they're a bit money grabbing

you could make houmous with chickpeas and then put it on a ricecake or some toast...we had success with a tortilla wrap tonight...

tetty - there are some schedules at the top of the thread...i think my dd is taking less milk but i do leave an hour before attempting to get some food down her.

bitofasnowqueen · 11/12/2008 19:15

Tetty if the routine works for you then I'd stick with it! From everything I've read, the lunchtime milk is often the first to go completely so your DD may look for some milk mid afternoon then.

Thinking the same as you giantsantasacks on the stock cubes. Surely DS wont end up with salt poisoning if his food is made with the odd normal stock cube as long as no other salt added? Of course, I plan to be a domestic goddess and make my own stock (yep, i'm the one who's never cooked a meal for DH)

TettyLouBar · 11/12/2008 19:36

Right, thanks for that. I was beginning to think that I had it all wrong. But DD really has taken to the routine well and rarely fusses as if she's hungry between feeds.

I'm glad somebody was already mentioning the stock cube point as I was wondering that myself. It seems rather silly buying "baby stock cubes"
Giantsantasacks: can you give me a brief idea of how you put the stock together in what quantities? Ive never made stock before and have been looking for a recipe for it.

neenztwinz · 11/12/2008 21:29

Debs, DTs were on 6 cubes each at that stage, for lunch and tea, quickly moving onto more and more, and then breakfast too.

Madame cheese, I cook lentils (20 mins BTW) then freeze them in pots/ice cube trays then just add them to cubes of parsnip/sweet potato/broccoli etc as we go. Prob ends up very much like Pudding's stew.

Re defrosting/warming food, I try not to use the microwave cos it affects the immune-boosting properties of the food (all nutrients remain the same tho apparently) so I always put frozen cubes straight into a saucepan maybe with a bit of boiled water on low heat and they defrost/heat up in a few mins.

Tetty, I give a milk feed first thing (7.30) then breakfast about an hour later, then lunch at 11 then milk straight after (but a small amount I think - I am BFing so not sure), then another milk feed at 2.30, then tea at 5 then a milk feed before bed (7pm). I am not bothering with making stock - they'll have to be happy with water

Not sure about chickpeas except hummus as someone mentioned... I think you can roast chickpeas as well

MadameCheese · 11/12/2008 23:32

I'm still troubled by the idea of "baby stock cubes"

neenztwinz · 12/12/2008 09:24

baby stock cubes = con . I think they are low or free of salt.

Somone was asking about fruit - I buy plastic tubs of fruit pieces in juice. You can get pears, peaches, prunes and even papaya (Nature's Finest) so I use them at breakfast. It is so easy to just throw a few pieces in a saucepan, boil for a couple of mins and then mash. I add baby rice to thicken it and make it a bit more filling.

OP posts:
giantsantasacks · 12/12/2008 10:01

yep - agree with neenz, water is the way to go with casseroles and stews - theres veg in there anyway so dont think you need to bother with stock...

but tetty if you're making it you can either fry off some onions/leeks and then add half a saucepan of water with equal amounts of carrots/swede/potato/herbs/wine/whatever you've got lying around then bring to the boil and then simmer for ages or you can leave out the whole frying bit and just boil and simmer in water - tbh though if you're going to do this you may as well put some chicken or lentils in as well to make a casserole . oh and you may need to skim off the froth with a spoon if it looks a bit manky.

tsk am never going to get paid to write cookery books am I [closes door on another money making opportunity]

lauraloolajinglesalltheway · 12/12/2008 10:37

I need some recipes with fish in. Dp and I dont eat fish unless its from the chippie and I really dd to eat it and enjoy it.

What is easy to cook?? What do you puree it with?

Dd is 6mo is she ok to have any fish now??

giantsantasacks · 12/12/2008 11:54

laura - lots of people on here do a fish pie so am sure someone can give you a 'proper' recipe...

But I am going to poach some white fish (having really had a good look for bones) in some milk (though you could just use water or the infamous stock) - its done when its completely white and then blitz it (having removed all skin etc) with some cooked peas using some of their cooking water. I will freeze this into cubes and defrost it with cubes of mashed potato or sweet potato to make fish pie.

my ds used to enjoy this so am hoping the dd will too.

pudding25 · 12/12/2008 13:03

Oh dear. I need to preview my messages before I send them!

That should have been 40 mins for the lentils.

baby stock is of course stock made out of water, veggies and a couple of grumpy babies .

neenztwinz · 12/12/2008 14:05

LOL pudding.

Fish - I poach cod loin (no skin or bone in but it is more expensive than fillet) in milk and water for 10 mins and then just mash it into the food eg with sweet pot, parsnip, peas, green beans etc! One cod loin does me two meals for two babies (so 4 portions)(7mths old)

OP posts:
lauraloolajinglesalltheway · 12/12/2008 14:18

Thanks giant and neenz - I hadnt thought of poaching it. I may have a go this weekend. I may even try to eat some myself

Egg · 12/12/2008 14:38

Hello everyone. Not been back on this thread for a week or more. My DTs love fish pie too. I buy Tesco fish pie mix (think it is haddock, cod and salmon but not actually sure) and poach it in milk for 10 mins or so, then mix it with potatoes and whatever veg we have fresh (usually carrots, broccoli or cauliflower). Also done it with peas which went down well.

Tonight all DCs are having salmon and mash with veg which is super easy as I just wrap a salmon steak in baking paper in microwave for 2.5 mins then blitz it down and mash with pots and veg.

My main prob is that everything the DTs eat comes with potato. I never do pasta or rice as only time they tried either they were not keen. Obviously the less they eat them, the less they will ever like them, and it took forever to get DS1 to take to eating pasta. Anyone got any nice pasta or rice recipes (easy please I am bad cook and lazy cook and "busy mum of three" ).

MERLYPUSSEDASAFART · 12/12/2008 22:54

My two had salmon today with broccoli and jacket spud innards. My saving grace has been white sauce if the food is too dry and I keep a batch in the freezer. Tomorrow they have got something with baked beans (poss chicken). I have been blitzing tinned fruit in natural juice for them to add to yogurt. You can get about 6 - 8 filled yog pots of fruit from one standard can do it works out quite cheap. Asda are selling 2 gree yogs for £1 so it works out cheaper and less sugar than formage frais petit fillous thingies. Also prunes in juice are good to add to porridge but go easy. I would say 2 prunes a day are ample if you get my drift.

neenztwinz · 12/12/2008 23:32

Yeah Merly, I have given the DTs prunes for breakfast the last few days and, I am not kidding, Esther's poos have been black!

Really good idea about yoghurt at fruit merly. Will make a note of that.

Am starting DS on babyrice today . Camera at the ready
